Second thoughts on supporting "free runes"... It does affect us.

I own 18 runepages and had all runes I needed (with spare IP incase I didn't) and until now, I always supported the change to make the runes making them free. I don't think it was a good system to drag new players through the trouble that we've gone through. It's good to diminish these barriers for newer players for a more fair environment (so that progress is more based on improving their skill rather than their account). I don't even care that this is a direct nerf to my ingame performance (since I no longer have the advantage of extra flexibility due to runepage advantage). I think that was a rather unfair advantage to begin with (that I happily abused).

What I'm talking about is that this change wasn't an isolated one. It's confirmed by Riot Cactopus here ( https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/fRZopjhE-bring-back-the-old-value-of-orange-disenchant-riot?comment=0009 ) that Orange essence value were reduced (from 33% cost to 20%) because of the free runes creating a dip in Riot's financials and that the netto result is intentionally lower than it used to be.

I don't want to make the promise that the orange essence amounts you get will “even out” or be the same as before. There’s way too much variance in the rates that people get OE from mastery and all the other systems for us to say that with a straight face. And the truth is the nerf to OE disenchant rates was significant.

They intentionally reduced the amount of skins we can get for free because of new players no longer having to grind for IP. While I still think it's a good initiative, I dislike the compensations that they had to make for it. I was under the assumption that Riot could remove the runes prices because they had excess income and saw this as an investment for the future (more new players). Instead, they decided to instantly compensate it by diminishing rewards for veteran players (not in terms of BE but OE!). With all the discussion about whether or not we get less BE, it seems like the OE reduction has been largely neglected. Personally I'd prefer to get half the BE (since I cant do anything with it) than less OE. Riot knows this, they know that BE is essentially useless for veterans, so they increased it when they saw we were upset by getting less BE. However, this whole discussion only disguised the more important loss in OE that does affect veteran players (and thus Riot's income).

I know Hextech crafting is something they gave us for free and aren't owed to us, but it always feels bad when you get 'less for free' than before.

tl;dr I still think it's good that runes are free now, but I disagree with the measurements they took to compensate for it (less orange essence for everyone).

I think its fine if you're getting those shards for free, but if Ii'm paying rp for these boxes I want a full return.

Well it's a trade-off. We get more shards and we can get them from leveling up, and they also plan on giving them out during events and quests and stuff. That's what he means by "spreading it" across multiple systems. They're giving ALOT more stuff for free and I especially love that. (for crying out loud, they gave me battle boss blitz and warring kingdoms garen for free and those weren't even shards)

##Edit: Even if you disagree with the reasoning below, don't downvote me too much! I want more people to see our honest response to this question.

This orange essence thing is a spicy one but I'll take my best shot at addressing it. The most honest answer it comes down to is that we wanna be able to spread out orange essence type loot and rewards across multiple systems without having to take an additional huge revenue hit at the same time that we're making runes free.

I'll explain what I mean.

Basically, when we first started giving out skins and stuff through the loot system, the only way you could get it was by

  1. paying for it or
  2. earning it through the mastery chests.

Going into 2018 you're also gonna get skin content through things like events and honor (lets call them "orange shards" since we're really talking about anything that can be disenchanted into orange essence). We lowered the disenchant rate on shards, and we're giving out more shards.

So that's what I mean by spreading it across multiple systems. I think we'll actually have to wait and see whether players feel that the additional shards from the other systems make up for the disenchant rate changes. Preseason shipped with some other upgrades to loot like bad luck protection and chances for double drops in chests, and I think we'll have to wait and see how that feels for players before we'll know.

to highlight...

So this is the trade-off: less essence, but more shards.

SO what does that mean? It means you are getting the same amount of orange essence (overall) but just getting more for shards for free and more shards from other sources. This is what they mean by spreading out shards over a wider area, and also what they mean by "bad-luck" protection.

More shards means you have a higher chance of receiving the champ skins you want because you are re-rolling the rng more and more. Although, this new system has offset the cost of rp chests (which they should probably adjust to fit the new model).

and they even admit that this is a problem they're currently working on.

I do see people here talking about how this hurts those who like paying money for chests, and that specific problem is one I think we’ll have lots of discussions about internally.

To be honest, they should just give out more boxes to those people who bought into the old system. It may ease the transition to the new system.
