So we know about how Riot's gonna eventually revisit Morde

How long until they revisit Garen...or are we still saying his rework was actually decent?

If by decent you mean improved him, then yes, it was decent.

His highest general win rate of 50% is in BRONZE. In Diamond he falls under like 45% on a 2%-ish play rate.

This champ is LITERALLY only outdone in being bad by the likes of Kalista, Yorick...hell, not even Vayne is this bad atm. Before now, he was a low-elo buster that had no value in higher elos...and now he's the exact same thing but with a gimmick. This rework was crap.

Improved does not mean buffed. Win rates are beside the point. Improved does not mean completely fixed. Vlad is the same as he was before too, he's also improved.

Even with that logic, Garen plays literally the same. No new moves or animations...just new numbers. He's literally the same as before, if not worse.

Yeah lol he loses lane against anyone nowadays

@thread Garens rework gave him a metric fragton of true damage. its an unhealthy bandaid that just makes us frustrated. Garens role as an ultramarine should, in my opinion, remain and it should be the core of his concept because its FUN.

:c When they rework him again, i hope they rework the villain mechanic and give him something else like "Garen gains greatly increased movement speed while moving towards the villain. While in combat garen gains +1armor/MR per enemy killed." and then on his W he gets his HP regen as well as tenacity when moving towards an enemy.

Somewhat off-topic, but did anyone else watch Phoenix1 Inori play Mordekaiser against Immortals? Easily the most entertaining LCS game I've ever seen

Garen's rework didn't do jack shit for him. He's still garbage, and he's still unable to be strong without running an entire city over, so he stays garbage. Not sure why no one's talking about it though, so I made this thread.

They said his lategame would be good, but why do people still ignore me and outsustain my damage, even with a black cleaver, inf edge and full tank

this is not true. garen has been balanced in every division for almost a year. including plat +

ive been following his statistics every patch since the juggernaut rework and the entire time up to the mage update he was remarkably stable.

his curent state, just like nasus is simply a result of repeated item nerfs. he needs number buffs to compensate. simple as that.

his rework overall was actually really successful. he was at 52% winrate for a very long time in plat + games, while being at almost the same winrate in lower divisions.

overall it managed to make his kit work at all levels of play, except pro play. but i couldnt care two shits about pro play tbh. probably none of us are ever going to play in challenger or the LCS anyways.

less reason for him to get nerfed because someone is playing him in pro play is an advantage in my opinion. i mean look at how some champions got utterly destroyed because of it.

make him good until diamond 1 and ill be statisfied.

This is what I observed to happens as well. Garen was in a really nice spot for a while there, and then Riot nerfed all his favorite items; including cleaver and boots. Some compensation buffs would be nice, even if Riot is focusing more on the pro scene right now.

A good attempt at buffing him would be to remove the crit damage from his spin, and buff the raw numbers instead. After the crit item changes earlier this season, IE is the only crit item Garen could build without wasting gold on attack speed. If straight number buffs are too much, the spin could apply on-hits to buff his synergy with the hydra brothers. Imagine Garen with a duskblade spin, that's double the execute at the end of it. With wit's end and cleaver, Garen now shreds both resists and does mixed damage.

riot repertoir said, the crit scaling doesnt affect his power budget. he didnt lose anything for keeping the spin crits, because he knows it is more of a fun off build than an optimal build.

he pretty much put the spin crits back on after the rework was done, because it wouldnt affect his standart builds.

i also think, since most of the item nerfs hit his lategame defense, a good start would be to buff his w in some form, and maybe increase his base health scaling/lvl.

if thats not enough, then they could revert the mobility buff he received shortly after his rework.

well yea, his winrate is low because he is undertuned right now. it has been slowly dropping over the course of the seaosn with all the item nerfs. and then it finally took a large hit with the mage update.

im just saying after his rework the difference in strength between lower divisions and plat + was very small.

he sat at like 54% winrate in bronze and silver, when he was at 52% winrate in plat + in the first month of the season.

he was overall better balanced across multiple divisions than pre rework.

i think right now he could just use some general number buffs to get him into a good spot above plat again.

But what I'm saying is that we only think he's alright because he isn't strong at all atm. Garen has virtually nothing to offer to teams except nuking one person and being tanky, rather than speedy, while doing it. His sustain option as a juggernaut is pitiful in comparison to the other jugs, he has no pulls, flips, aoe ass-blasting tentacle dances, resets, projectiles, hell...he doesn't even have a dragon. He's just walking damage and an execute, so after executing one guy, what's Garen doing? Even when it comes to high, single-target damage, that's Darius's niche as a jug already, and he does it way better by slaying the whole enemy team one pleb at a time. The villain mechanic was "eh" on paper, but they needed to make bigger changes to Garen's overall kit and they needed the villain mechanic to be a bit...better in general. Maybe instead of giving him 1% true damage per hit and a true damage ult, he could reap some reward that applied to ALL enemies for hunting villains?

Long story short: There's nothing to play around on this champ, so his reward is too low. Why don't we just play Darius?

i dont know, he just feels more reliable when hes good.

he doesnt have the pentakill potential of darius or illaoi, but at the same time he doesnt feel restricted to very specific scenarios to be effective, like they do.

on darius its easy to get kited and juked and denied your penta dunks pretty easily, even if you manage to trigger your passive. garen on the other hand is slightly less kitable and feels like has it a bit easier to follow up team engages and get where he needs to be.

i dont really want anything about his general playstile to change, and his villain passive is there to gve him reliable true damage so he can carry and take out particularly nasty adc, or other snowballing fighters like irelia or darius.

if anything is changed, then id rather see him scale harder into lategame, and tweaks to his vllain passive that it doesnt land on useless targets like the enemy support anymore.

but those changes wouldnt be on a the level of an actual rework, but general tweaks and number buffs.

Well, the issue with his villain marks is that you can't just say "If the enemy is Soraka, she can't be a villain". It'd be unfair to say "Whoever has the most kills is the villain" because that just means that person is subject to true damage ults until someone else has more kills than them, which is oppressive. The villain mechanic just needs to give a different reward outright instead of true damage, assuming it's kept.

As for his reliability, his insanely high reliability is the issue here. When it comes to risk/reward, higher reliability usually gets lesser reward, yet higher variance can be overcome with champion mastery. The result is that Garen is a more reliable champ, so he's decent in low elo, but he's still bad overall, so he's garbage in the higher ones...which is where balancing is based on. His current play style has nothing in it at all to miss or mess up, and that takes a toll on his overall power budget, which is the problem. Darius can fuck up his spin and his pull. Illaoi can fuck up nearly everything save like one spell. This is why it's easy for Riot to find a decent spot for balancing these champs, unlike others that have so little to play around that allowing them to be "kinda good" makes them too good. Tying this back into the Darius comparison: Darius serves as the "High single-target damage tanky dude running your whole team down", and Illaoi serves as the "AOE juggernaut slapping everyone at the same time"...literally what is Garen given this? A skilled Darius or Illaoi IS Garen and more, and that's the issue. Shutting down one person isn't a valuable niche, especially when that one person might accidentally be Blitzcrank.

If I were to see changes to Garen, first thing I'd wanna see is a change to his passive and his ability to sustain himself in fights. Other jugs have some dynamic in-fight sustain options, and Garen's sustain option is...Warmog's lite? Just buy Warmog's itself and it's more than enough...who cares about a passive that does like 1/4 of that? Could also give him an actual attack for his W or change his Q into something that isn't a guaranteed silencer dunk. Just something to make room for more reward for shutting down villains...maybe even allow the villain benefit to increase as the villain becomes a bigger threat. Something better than this though.

Riot have basically forgotten about Garen.

When are they going to learn that the game is balanced around plat+. So if some silver shitter crys about Garen being "broken" their opinion shouldnt even count as they are shit at the game..

Garen is a garbage champ and we all know it.

he didnt even get a rework really. it was honestly more balance changes than an actual rework

I wanna see morde become a raid boss, on the tier of nasus or old ryze. I want people to FUCKING RUUUUUN when they see the suit of armour loudly clanking towards them. Slow movement speed but super tank and dmg. I think this is what Morse should be. A real fucking juggernaut.

Oh wait is this s garen thread? Thought it was about morde judging by the title
