After crying about Project M's cancelation

It made me realize this simple truth about League of Legends

This game is not balanced or made for the long term, simply the way the game is made cannot support a deep meta for years, if not even a couple of monthes on one patch. LoL realies on the fact that new content will prevent people from trying to solve the game, to make the meta deeper. Riot knows this too. They now that their reworks will probably never last 2 years, meaning they would potentially have to do it again in another 2 years (Looking at you Eve). This isn't supposed to be a bad truth either. This oculd be mean people would try new things.** However, in Project M (and same case in league) when a new patch would come out people would drop their favourite characters just so they could have a better chance**. (Note: this isn't nessisarly a bad thing but it prevents a deeper meta) With no more patches happening anymore people might be willing to actually try to develop a meta (if the community lives through it). This makes me think, how long could league go without a patch? In PM patches would come out about every 6 monthes, but for a fighting game that is almost never enough time for a meta to solidify. For league I could only imagine that if we were kept on one patch for 6 monthes one of 2 possibilities would occur.

  1. The perfect team composition with close to perfect play would be solved
  2. The champs originally thought to be OP would find counters (Example being Link in Melee, who was though originally to be an S tier character, oh how wrong were they)

So how long do you think League could last for on a single patch?

I think the difference is that League is much more complex than Smash. Not only does it have more characters, the item system is much more complicated than Smash's, and the whole dimension of map movement is completely changed. Objectives are a thing, as is gold income during the game. With this in mind, League's balance is much more volatile than Smash's, which requires a more frequent patching system.

That said, I think a distinct meta HAS developed: tank or bruiser toplane, mage or assassin mid, support and AD carry bottom, and some other champion in the jungle. This meta is EXTREMELY well-enforced at all but the highest levels of play; how many times in your last games did you see a double jungle, or a Pantheon/Leona botlane? (Try that, it's BRUTAL.)
