Why don't we see Triforce Olaf?

RivetAce··1 votes·3,694 views

item 1401 into item 3078 is meta for a good amount of junglers. Why isn't that build used on Olaf?

Compared to the most common user of that core Hecarim, Olaf has 2-7 more base AD, and .024 more base AS. He certainly doesn't have problems proccing it either with his Undertow resets.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Maokai Sion Warwick all have similarly high base AD and AS. Why not them either?

Don't Triforce users generally have a low-mana, low cd spam skill? If he does not get the Q reset he loses out. (same with the others; they have pretty long cds.)

There are better items for him. That's pretty much it.

IT's ok, but if you want damage on Olaf, you're better off just building raw AD since his AD ratios are so high.

Verxint1 votes

Because you give up a whole bunch of other options for a gimmicky proc that relies on you autoattacking people. Most of Olaf's damage is Cinderhulk, Undertow, and his E. Other items in the same slot either give more raw AD for those two abilities or more defensive stats to use those abilities more often. In the end, the benefit from a Trinity Force is not worth the opportunity cost of another item.

RivetAce1 votes

Olaf's W also relies on autoattacking people. And his E basically requires him to be in auto range anyway. Your combo doesn't have to change much - just Q until you get to them, and then E and auto, and keep Q-ing.

Is his Q AD scaling that much better than Hecarim Q AD scaling?

BluePolarizer1 votes

It's not a bad item at all. It gives him more anti-squishy damage than Titanic or Cleaver and makes him very sticky.

However, it doesn't scale the way Titanic/Cleaver does as a frontliner, since with Titanic, he can choose to dive the backline or just as effectively frontline with his massive lifesteal and splash damage/splash armor reduction from axe. It is exclusively an anti-squishy item since Olaf doesn't build arpen outside cleaver, and Olaf in general has no problem killing squishies already. Q->Auto->E->Titanic reset is enough to delete squishies until ultra late game.

Why does nobody build item 3071 item 3748 on Hecarim then? You could argue the same reasons I think.

Actually, with CotC people are starting too. Because stacking health is quite nice then.

No they dont. Cleaver has wasted stats and he doesnt need any AoE help to justify hydra with Q spam, W, and cinder

Hecarim isn't as good of a frontliner (in terms of fighting other frontliners) as Olaf is. He's more of an initiator/diver. He doesn't have anti-tank abilities, the ability to absorb alot of damage or the ability to mitigate CC, but he has amazing burst damage, mobility and CC. He is specialized to fight squishies, so he builds Triforce.

Good frontliners almost never build Triforce. Look at some typical frontliners: Darius, Olaf, Nautilus, Maokai, Illaoi, Mundo, Shyvana. They all have AOE or %HP, sometimes both, and huge tank steroids. None of them build Triforce. Divers that go straight for squishies build Triforce - Jax, Irelia and Hecarim can all bypass the frontline and straight up start fighting the carries while they're stunned.

RivetAce1 votes

This is the best explanation I've gotten, and it makes sense. It also explains why Triforce ADCs KogMaw Corki aren't good, since they will most often be fighting frontline.

What do you think Warwick's role is? Is he a diver or a frontliner? Or is he neither and that's why he sucks?

BluePolarizer1 votes

Corki isn't that bad, because he forces hybrid resists from frontlaners. Kog just has low numbers right now. Ezreal is also a Triforce ADC and does fine. Triforce is OK on ADCs because they can also itemize Last Whisper, but melees usually can't build both Triforce and Last Whisper since they need to get tanky.

WW: depends on what you want from him. He can frontline due to his very high sustain but his ult also allows him to be a diver. His limitation is that he farms slowly, so you usually make more money from ganks and thus most ppl play him like a diver. But if your team needs a tank, then you can just go bloodrazor->tanky.

If you go for frontline, you usually get Bloodrazor->full tank or Bloodrazor->tanky->titanic hydra so you don't get bursted, sustain in the front and look for opportunities to ult. If you dive, you want your ult+Q+a few autos to kill, so you usually get BoRK or Wit's End second instead of tanky second.

Olaf - and Makoa Sion and WW all have items that are better on them which makes it hard to justify tri force on them. Olaf generally goes Black Cleaver then full tank or just full tank. Its hard to justify putting a damage item that would replace BC since BC is so good on Olaf.

RivetAce1 votes

Then why does nobody go item 3071 on Hecarim?

Kirius Dark1 votes

CDR is pretty much wasted w his guaranteed item 3065 and item 3078. With double rampage stacks you really cant use it any faster and if you do you'll just run OOM. You want autos in between his Qs too and if you're spamming it that much you arent autoing since Q cancels his autos, so it overrides the triforce sheen proc

It's not bad, its just hec gets enough just from 1 damage item then straight tank which makes him near unkillable. You want to stay up and be the diver or peel for your team, not be the everything killer carry. If I keep my allies up they do damage and keep me up since their damage heals me. If you want to be greedy to do heavy damage at a cost of survival then you're losing out on a lot for the team

If i get a second damage item its a heavier tank than damage item like item 3053 or rarely item 3022

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

For Maokai, his basic attacks really aren't that important aside from healing from his passive. Attack speed and attack damage isn't that great, and he can already get a sheen proc from item 3025, which is a pretty decent item on him. More importantly, you're losing out on a slot that could be used for another tank item, which is what you want when playing him.

I'd imagine it might be a similar case for Sion, but I don't really play him.

Escheton1 votes

Triforce is expeeeensive. And the spike isn't worth the delay. Unlike with some other champs.

Ralanr1 votes

Sion doesn't auto attack much.

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

It's just too expensive for olaf, since he's pretty squishy during his ult if he doesn't have resists from items.

If you are fed enough that you can get a damage item titanic hydra is better, but most likely you need to go full tank so that you can live long enough to reach the enemy backline. His base damages are usually enough until late game for him to kill people if he's tanky enough to live for a few seconds.

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

As for other champions you mentioned, they don't have a low cooldown spammable spell for easy sheen procs, so triforce isn't efficient on them. WW wants on hit effects for synergy with his ult and W, and sion and maokai generally need to build full tank (so they can't usually afford a 3733 gold item detour).

Wolfess1 votes

Heca spams Q like every second so triforce is better on him, plus the move speed synergyzes well with his passive.

RivetAce1 votes

Triforce can't proc more than once every 2 seconds. And Olaf spams his Q as well.

no, he doesn't because you should very likely be getting a frozen mallet on him. if you spam Q on olaf you will run out of mana VERY fast.

Kirius Dark1 votes

Other than Hecarim Vi who else would get it? Wouldnt say good amount of junglers do

Rock MD1 votes

IMO Vi shouldn't be getting it. Only person who should be getting Triforce is Hecarim and that's because he likes farming up that gold. With champions like Vi while you will be farming you want to focus on ganks and that means cheap, faster items that are still very effective and obnoxious.

As for Olaf idk. I just don't think he's good with it.

either way its fun with fervor, just a little bit more squish early but way better 1v1ing imo
