Why is there no respect in ranked for leavers?

I just played a ranked game where, 35 minutes in, our ADC left, with no explanation.

Even though my team fought well, we still lost in a 4v5. Which is pretty much expected, right?

I was sitting at 0 points; I was kicked down a whole teir because a player left the game.

Why is there no "loss prevented" or something, for such a scenario? Obviously a 4v5 is not a good basis for determining rank.

If there was a system like this in place it could cause toxic players to be extra toxic in an attempt to convince someone to leave. Perhaps in the future something like this could work but for now there are other priorities.

that seems pretty harsh.

that seems pretty harsh.

Worse case scenarios are worth considering, and significantly softening the blow of a loss on rankings would certainly motivate some players to troll incredibly hard with that aim - or even verbally abuse others and try to intimidate them into leaving.

The opposite is also true where you could have some players intentionally leave what looks like a loosing battle to "take one for the team", in which case probably causing the loss will self-justify their reasoning for leaving.

You could even have smurf accounts in teams or pre-mades that leave in a group to lessen the blow on everyone else's losses.

okay, so it's probably not a feature that should be implemented in team play, because of the additional communication there. However I still think it has value in solo queue.

Riot can't systematically give less LP/MMR loss to one team and full LP/MMR gain to the other. It'll break the Ranked ladder over time because of massive LP inflation.

They could give reduced gain and loss in matches with a leaver. However, this would be unfair to apply mid-match in some cases. For instance, let's say my team is winning really hard, and someone on the other team ragequits because their team won't surrender. It would not be fair to give the winning team less LP/MMR gain in that case. It's really hard to tell those apart consistently from someone just having technical problems. It also offers an incentive to troll or shame your teammates into quitting, since then you'd get reduced LP loss!

It might be reasonable to apply this in cases where someone never connects to the match at all. DOTA2 simply doesn't count such games in terms of their Ranked stats, for instance. Riot has said they're looking into doing something in this case, such as replacing that player and restarting the match, or maybe pausing the match for a couple minutes to give that player a chance to reconnect. Maybe we'll see something for Season 5.

While this is definitely frustrating, in the long run it happens to everyone. In fact, if you never have connection issues, you'll win more matches then you lose -- each match there are 4 players on your team who might DC, and 5 on the enemy team.

it still seems wrong to even gain full points when the enemy team had a leaver. Maybe not no points, but maybe 50% of the points each team would otherwise be rewarded with.

At least a feature to prevent losing a teir if you're at 0. I have five games in a row to be at the same point again because of one leaver.

I feel like people would be even more upset if they got penalized for a mid- or late-game leave/DC/AFK on the opposing team. With ragequits in particular, often you had earned the win already by being way ahead, so taking away the reward there would feel like a slap in the face.

To drop a whole tier you usually have to have lost a ton of games before that -- your MMR has to be almost a full tier below where it "should" be. One leave didn't do that, and there's a good chance that you've won at least a couple games this Ranked season due to connectivity issues on the opposing team.
