Considering that Kat's Shunpo now has virtually no CD and can blink just about anywhere...

Are you even supposed to be able to counter her as someone like Lux or Ziggs? Or is this one of those "Don't pick" cases?

The first problem I see with your post is the implication that a blink somehow invalidates lux and ziggs. You seem to be suggesting that dealing magic damage to katarina is a priority.

It makes it impossible to land a snare on Kat if she's not braindead (or unless someone sets you up), and it makes laning against a Kat obnoxious because she could try and zone you.

lux is a mage support ziggs is a mage

katarina is an assassin and assassins are strong against mages

If nobody is setting up your plays as a mage then they do not want to win. Mages are not typically designed to function solo or to attack a single specific target.

1v1 is not a mage thing, assassins love 1v1.

That said, the objective in lane isn't to kill katarina. Sure helps but the goal is to prepare to destroy the nexus.

Can she zone you? sure, get used to it and get over it. If you are getting zoned and can no longer function then you are simply bad at the champ or are determined to do something you can't do for some other reason and will need help. If no help is coming then come up with a different strategy. (you should already have this strategy ready before the game actually if you don't suck at the champ, usually referred to as a "fallback plan")

If you're not farming during laning, you may as well be dead.

Besides, you're advocating hard-counters. That's a crime. There has to be SOMETHING that mages can do against assassins, or assassins are toxic.

incorrect, you are still leveling and in this case using less mana possibly

false and semi-false

or mages are toxic, everyone can do something against assassins.

What you'd want to do in this case is just have a better strategy. As ahri or whoever i'm typically going to take an early trip back to base against things like leblanc or katarina. Do you know why?

Because 1 item is not enough, 2 small ones for longer is better than suffering until you get one big one that will do nothing

I go item 1056 item 1056 against katarina

I suppose double Doran is Lux's only option since Negatron rushing is a trap.

Also, leveling doesn't quite help if you have a severe item disadvantage.

Best to lose gold than give away 300. XP is always better than gold.

There is counterplay, you just poke her out. She isn't going to shunpo nonstop. Moreso with Ziggs and Lux since their poke is way out of Kats range. She may be resourceless but her health isn't infinite.

Hell the best counters to assassins I feel ARE Ziggs, Lux, Xerath and Velkoz since while they are all slow, they so far outrange them that they can't win lane at all against them unless the mages make a mistake, so they have to roam, which can end up in them losing a tower or 2 and then never being able to roam anymore. Or jungler is tanky and dives but even then they all have the kits available to take at least one with them if not both. Idk about you, but I LOVE being Lux and being tower dived. Since even if I die, I will damn well Q R both your faces in and if that doesn't kill, the tower shots will. I lost count of how many times I got tower dived as Lux and kept getting doubles for my death. 2 kills per death, I will happily take that every single time.

Katarina's mobility is really predictable. She wants to throw a dagger and she wants to jump to it.

You don't try to snare her when she's just doing her thing. You want to try to snare her when she predictably jumps to a dagger, since you know that's what she's going to do.

Also, Lux can easily poke Katarina out of lane with her E (plus her passive early-game). You shouldn't need to snare her. The goal is not to kill her, but to push her out of lane so you can get a farm/level advantage. You shouldn't be trying to kill an assassin. As an immobile, skillshot-based mage, Lux is (intentionally) weak to assassins. The matchup favours Katarina, but not excessively so.

Ziggs can just push and spam poke. Again, his strength is farming against her and poking her out of lane. He's not supposed to kill her unless she misplays. She is stronger than him early game, but his goal is to scale into a late-game poke-spamming, wave-clearing, tower-wrecking monster.

Ok sure but why1 votes

you can always put your e behind yourself when she throws the dagger

early game, at least
