How to make supports more appealing
I have a few things that might make people feel less shitty about playing the support role. As someone that mained support earlier in the season, I really enjoyed helping people but loathed the inability to be able to carry.
As a support, you get starved for gold because your gold giving items only give you 2 gold per 10 seconds or 8 gold on enemy champ hit. It gets frustrating because without the gold income, you then become useless. You're 3 levels behind everyone because you're always with someone else, or your roaming so you don't get any experience at all. No one really lets supports take wards either, so you lose that 15 gold because your ADC walked up to get the last hit on that pink you've been fighting that enemy Janna for for the last 30 seconds.
I have a few solutions that would make the support role more enjoyable for most people and make the role more picked, thus decreasing queue times.
First off, make gold income more available to support heavy items. For example, make Relic shields and Spellthiefs give more passive gold. Either increase the amount of gold given every 10 seconds, or keep the amount of gold at 2, but make it for every 4-6 seconds. This would create less of a "my ADC wants to back at level 6, but I only have 600 gold so I'll stay" feeling, especially at the lower elo's where people are more likely to do that to not get behind.
Another way to increase gold income for supports, would be to 5-10 gold when you find a ward, or grant an assist to someone when their ward results in a vision kill (i.e. an enemy is killed within your wards sight range). Since vision is a heavy part of the game, this would greatly increase the number of wards placed through out the game. Now, yes this would be a little abused considering a support could just walk up to a fight and place a ward and get an assist, but I think if you put a certain range on it, then it would be healthier. For example, say you're blue side, and you drop a ward at the enemy blue, you would at least have to be at drake pit for it to count as an assist. This would increase the amount of vision on the map, as well as play a heavy role in vision denial.
Yet again, another way to make supports more attractive, is to give them buffs to their allies or themselves. For example, Zeke's is a great item and really fits for a support. You know, buff your teammate and give them a better chance at winning the fight. However, as a support, you're usually laning with and roaming with your ADC, so the extra AP on the bind is kinda useless. But the item is a step in the right direction.
Now, for a self buff, I'm thinking of making an item that not only buffs the support them selves, but gives their allies a slight buff aswell. You know, something like a passive self buff to give them more experience on minion death while near an ally (kinda like Morde's full XP, but not as much) as well as giving an active on the same item that gives any allies within a certain range of you a spell shield or a normal shield (spell shield might be a bit broke, but would be nice in team fights).
Obviously an item like this wouldn't be readily available to them, but would take time to get to. Maybe make it along the cost line as say a
so it's not super easy to get to and would take time. You could also make the shield strength scale .5 with health. So the person who has the item is a little more attracted to health items. This would also make it not so wanted by those supports that build mostly AP and utility.
These are just some things that I think would make playing the support role much more appealing. You would feel more useful rather than just feeling like someone that should be a meatshield but you're so far behind that you don't have the right items to be viable.
Just some thoughts, let me know what you think?
