"So are just gonna get carried as a support in ranked?"
A friend of mine asked me this after I got my first win out of placements. I won most of my games in my placements as a support so I kinda grew comfortable with the role.
Support is not my main role however. I have always considered myself a primary top main as it's where many of my favorites love to go (I also enjoy the jungle but the jungle is not enjoying me at the moment). So I'm mainly playing in my secondary role in a competitive environment because I feel it increases my chances of winning (in that I know how to play support decently so my carry isn't stuck with an autofilled support).
In low elo (currently bronze 1) it works surprisingly well. People aren't exactly bad at their champions, they are just really bad at not dying. So having a support that can keep you alive can effectively make you unstoppable. That's probably why all these shields and heals are getting abusive, it makes punishing mistakes incredibly hard.
Now I've always had this mindset. I main tanks, my job is to keep people locked down or protect my carries. Keeping bloodthirsty people alive just gives good results. But I don't feel like I can be impactful early enough to my team as a top laner, so I don't really mind not getting top over support.
Hell, yesterday I put myself as primary support! I usually don't need to because the system sees support and is like "K, thanks for volunteering. I'll be back from my date at 10".
But I'm not really learning my main role that well. I fear that the more I climb as a support, the worse I get at top. I know that my elo can effect my normal MMR opponents, but I feel that gold players (the rank I'm aiming for) don't take normals that seriously for me to learn much.
I'm probably going to go back to top primary, but I don't expect to get it often enough to really improve. Should I not even bother with this thought and just try and climb anyway?
