Can we talk about Soraka on ARAM?

I'm starting not to like getting Soraka in ARAM. Soraka is the game's "dedicated healer". ARAM pretty much hates on healers in general (check that little icon thingy at the bottom).

  1. Her Q's mana costs are high early game if you max those first. Starting chalice helps a little, but not much if you choose to go that route. The good news is there are a lot of targets for her to hit. The bad news is she's extra squishy and all those extra champs she has to deal with early on are bad for her health. And you've now got 3 extra people finding ways to drain your health when the enemy isn't hitting you. This also lacks damage it needs as she's got bad AP ratios on this skill for a high mana cost. Even if you do hit it for 250 HP, you've still got wukong, irelia, leblanc, katarina, and sejuani charging at you because you are low from pressing W and no escape. So basically you're still screwed even when you hit your Qs.
  2. W has a high health cost, for half health healed. Because ARAM. So she's really punished hard for doing the one thing she's meant to do there. Still no self heal from it. You can't base up in ARAM. In SR you can base up when low. As I mentioned in 1, she's got extra teammates draining her from the beginning. She still can't build health there. She still has limited self healing. Her W isn't designed to keep 4 other people healed from level 3 and that's what you have to do. With 5 enemies and 4 teammates, someone is getting hit. If you don't heal with her, she's kind of useless.
  3. It's okay, and I tend to level it a little before I max W but only because her W is extra gimped there. AP ratios again aren't great so buying AP for damage instead of healing isn't that rewarding.
  4. Her big heal is halved. She and Janna are the only champs with ults specifically nerfed in ARAM. Janna still has the fight reset aspect.
  5. If a snowball hits you or a teammate next to you, you are probably screwed.

As a former Soraka main, I'm one of the people who are less than 100% happy with her rework. As someone who plays a ton of ARAM, being the person who gets her is starting to make me sad. Soraka's new kit goes completely against what Riot is trying to do with ARAM and I personally feel that it really reveals the gimped nature of her kit. She revolves around healing others and in ARAM you are penalized for doing that as Soraka by twice as much as in SR (because your heals only heal half as much for the same life cost).

She's not a damage dealer, she's not mobile, she can't build health, riot doesn't want her to be tanky in general, and she's extra punished for healing because ARAM. I know riot doesn't want to admit that they've disenfranchised some former soraka mains, but can you guys at least admit her kit sucks in ARAM because she's been completely tune for being a summoners rift support... you know where you can do things like base when you are low or heal people (sort of but not really).

As someone who plays soraka a bit still on SR, you are used to healing people when they are low. It's kind of her raison d'etre. You can't really do that in ARAM without getting punished too hard for it. Her kit just isn't tuned for that environment. At all.

I say halve the HP cost on her heal since she heals for half as much,

The most obvious, greatest solution. But would Riot do it?

Or maybe double the healing on her Q? (heh, like that would happen)

That would probably be a step in the right direction.

I just go full ap and mana regen. heal people occasionally, but really try and help the team with damage. She's a lot more troublesome than people give her credit for. Her abilities can hit decently hard, even if actually getting the center of starcall and both parts of equinox are a little iffy.

I understand where you are coming from and that's usually what I do, but when I look at her AP ratios (including a .3 W ratio adjusted for ARAM) it seems kind of weak to go AP on her.

Her heal has a .6 AP ratio and her ult has a .77 AP ratio on targets below 40% HP (.55 if they are above). You don't build AP to deal damage, but rather to strengthen her healing capacity.

Her heals are halved on ARAM so the .3AP ratio on her W is correct.

My record with her is 42k damage. I can get around 37k in longer games. Chalice and boots, try to not die until 3100 gold, buy ludens, get athenes and morello, the rest is pretty situational but i think i bought a deathcap in the 42k game. 3 man Qs with ludens heal you for a ton and do a ton of damage. Center hits can get up into the 500s pretty easily against squishies

  1. They are only bad if you are spamming. W's mana cost is minimal. E has a long cooldown and you shouldn't be using it on cooldown anyway. Q has a higher mana cost to help off-set this as it's mainly the only spell she has to manage mana wise. Unless you are hurting for the need of damage. Q shouldn't be maxed first. Although the gains per ranks are higher than W, it's still a low damage ability that you'll mainly be using to get HP. May as well make each hit more effective with W ranks. Needing less healing from Q will also save you mana in the long run.
  2. W is for the most part fine if you're landing your Q's. i would like to see the healing adjustment we had this year in URF. Where the healing to others started reduced but would increase 1% per minute till it reached 100%. Although I disagree with how this is handled anyway, but that's another topic for ARAM.
  3. Kind of goes back into #1.
  4. Soraka's heal is still a fight changer. This kind of goes into #2 otherwise.
  5. If snowballs are a problem, put your silence field under the marked target. Although snowballs are a different topic overall.

The return of Warmog's is a great help to Soraka on here as well.

As far as build you should be building a mix of ap, cdr, resistances and Warmogs(only HP item you should want).

  • Athene's
  • Hourglass
  • Abyssal
  • Warmogs
  • CDR boots
  • Damage item(Luden for higher Q hits, Deathcap which also boosts healing, Void Staff if they have a lot of MR although your main focus is not damage nor do you do a lot of it to begin with, Lichbane since you will be doing a lot of spell casts and banana's)

Not necessarily in this order. Abyassal and Hourglass can be traded out if the armor/mr is not needed. Generally picking up a second damage-focused item. But don't ignore support items as well. Twin Shadows is nice to have in later team fights and helps land Q's.

This is a pretty old topic, but I just wanted to put in that, if there's a Soraka on my team, I always try to trade to get her if I'm not already her. Once I have her, the first thing I do is tell the whole team that I will need practically EVERY SINGLE relic that spawns while I'm alive in order to keep healing. For the most part, they respect that and my win ratio playing her in ARAM is close to 5:1. Like others have said, item 3083.

Warmog's just got nerfed, doesn't that make it harder to justify on her? My aram games don't always go long enough for people to get to 16 or 18.

Everyone I talked to about it post nerf seems to be mixed. Some people have also correctly informed me that without enough AP, she's losing more life than she's healing.

Raka is fine. Healing is toxic as hell on ARAM.
