Explain why people say veigar and karthus are good late game?

In both cases ONE assassin can jump and go in. Even with his passive, the assassin gets away in karthus' case..... a wall won't stop them. Might as well use an earlier, mobile mage right?

Assassin kills Karthus, 1/5th of that teams hp gone.

Karthus presses R and spams Q's, 1/2th of the assassin's team hp gone.

For Veigar, he's really more of a midgame champion; lategame, tenacity, banshee's, and mercs ruin his safety and his low range is even more glaring when others are at full build.

Veigar is ridiculous because if you jump in on him, and you get stunned by him dropping stun on himself, you are instantly dead, no matter what. Lategame, being able to catch someone with an AoE stun and instantly burst them isn't fun.

Karthus's core items are item 3027 and item 3157 which doesn't leave him at the same sneeze-and-he's-dead defense of mages or marksman like Ziggs and Ezreal. The way Defile works tends to lead Karthus to be reasonably durable to optimize his skills, and item 3157 in particular can immunize Karthus from mid-teamfight assassinations and turn lost duels into stalemates against most assassins, if not allow Karthus to win in such situations.

Veigar is good late-game simply because he turns pretty much any 1v1 into a cowboy duel where whoever pulls the trigger first just wins. While he can clearly die if you ambush him, he's going to kill whoever he ambushes on the same token. Get up to 90 minutes and not even Galio is going to survive.

That's where the meta's shifted for the better part of 2 years.

A big part of Riot pushing more action and hitting stall-tactics, snooze-fest lanes is that late game is much harder to safely get to and early game is a heck of a lot more important.

Which pretty much explains why you never see late-game monsters like Tryndamere Poppy Karthus with an awful early, amazing late.
