The Problem With Pets

So, one of the most annoying mechanics in game, in my opinion, is the Champion pet. Every champion with a pet ability (maybe to the exception of Elise and Annie) has major balance issues. This is because they rely on the minions to deal damage. Now, it's perfectly acceptable to have some reliance on a certain ability, but the nature of pets are either overpowered and painful, or weak and nonexistent. That kind of dichotomy in gameplay gimps the champion to the point where they are either way too strong, or way too weak, and Riot favors the latter over the former.

Why pets are so annoying is simple: they are abilities that absentmindedly harass the player. They take no amount of skill to use, yet they can be frustrating to play against, because you have to waste time killing the pet instead of damaging the champion. Trades are inherently unfair in this manner, because you have to focus either the pet or the champion. Either way, though, you lose. Either you get damage off on the champ, and let the pet have free reign on you, or you focus the pet, and the champion get's away with no damage taken.

Holding down ALT can control a lot of pets, allowing a good deal of skill to be implored controlling a decent number of them. Shaco and LeBlanc's pets offer a lot of skill in this way, as do the ultimate pets of Mordekaiser and Annie.

Otherwise: pet's requiring low skill is very much an interface issue and not a pet-specific issue per-say. DotA and DotA2 offer a ton of skill with pets due to a better interface for controlling multiple units at once, leading to a lot of the most skill-intensive champions in those games being ones that need to micro-manage small armies.

Either you get damage off on the champ, and let the pet have free reign on you, or you focus the pet, and the champion get's away with no damage taken.

Or you just use an AoE skill to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. The vast majority of champions have aoe skills. It's also pretty easy to pick up AoE damage within items.

That is all well and good, but most AoE abilities don't have the radius needed to hit both or don't have enough damage to render the pets useless. I have less of a problem with Ultimate tied pets, because they are used to win fights, not trades. The basic pets, which can be spammed in laning and trading, are the problems here. Clones are also different in that really, Shaco is the only one that deals damage, and it's something that works because of Shaco.
