so OW uses bell curve ranking....

and it actually works. you still get the top peak in their "diamond - grand master rankings" and it still represents the best players in the game. the top still has that competition and everyone wants to go higher. while simultaneously it makes the ladder actually geared towards ranking up without the trashy "I cant rank up at all anymore, I lose more LP than I gain despite winning 50% of the time, why am i falling?" - that only exists for the top 1%, everyone else can still climb.

in overwatch you could win only 45% of matches, but you could still climb rank due to the fact that they have addition systems to measure skill outside of wins/losses

"bell curve"

vs

"log scaling"

the majority of players find themselves in the middle of the ranking system as opposed to everyone at the bottom. everyone is free to climb and rather quickly at that. no longer do you have to play X amount of games minimum to rank up.

come on riot, lets get it done.

You didn't explain very well how it works

basically in math, a bell curve means the average player finds themselves in the middle of a group along with the majority of everyone else. the best players are all the way on one side, and by winning more you climb and play with them. the worse players lose more often and find themselves on the other side and you play with those players.

overwatch has made bell curve ranking work in such a way that the majority of players are both ranked, and competitive at the same time.

league on the other hand uses logarithmic scaling. in which the average player is at the bottom. and everyone has to win their way up the ladder. the more you win, the higher you climb.

basically overwatch ranks players by skill. and league ranks players by number of wins.

in which overwatch says pending what hero you play, how badly or how awesome you performed you can gain more ranking or lose more ranking and at a much faster pace. its a much more friendly and accurate representation of players skill rather than their dedication.

I've been demanding this since season 2. I even created an entire concept to do that similar to what over watch has. I called it "Champion Mastery" and it would give players a score at the end of the game that related to their individual performance. That score could then be used to affect, mildly, LP and MMR gains and losses.

Riot decided they liked my system! But only half of it, and so only half of it got implemented and the entire reason for me coming up with it was left in the dust.

Rito... Sheez.

what kind of roles exist in overwatch. Can you win BECAUSE you went 0/130/0 as rammus or singed?

Very Hard Engage1 votes

theres offense, defense, tank, support. tank and support are considered "easier" and they gain/lose less ranking on average, but offense heros gain/lose it the quickest (for whatever reason, MMR magic I assume)

but in short, you could win being 0-8, and trash damage output, but blizzard considers this and they will give you less ranking for it, but if you perform really really well and consistently you will find yourself on the fast track up, silver -> diamond over night. no more "well im at least 30games out because of promos, and even though i win 70% of the time, im clearly not better than those around me, and I have to get a streak to pass promos"

Riot's too stupid to do anything logical.

Seriously we just need to go back to MMR. if you have gold level MMR and silver level elo, you will gain LP fast. if you have low MMR and high elo, you will be losing more LP than you gain.

this system sucks.

its strictly promotional matches, it forces the system into a rigid system of "well you have to play at least 5 more games before you can hit silver 2 and rank up from silver 3" "oh and by the way, enjoy playing with gold 5 players, cuz MMR, ya know" "games have to be fair"

either LP or MMR would be fine so long as they only used one system not both.

because i do gain upwards of 31 LP per win, but it still says I have to win 2/3 to advance at all.

if you reverted to MMR then there wouldn't be promo matches :) (hopefully)

Start using this trick if you want: dodge the promo games, maintain the win streak, skip promos the next time you are supposed to reach them.

There is literally no point to playing in promos if you can avoid it since you are always handicapped significantly. Its better to manage your MMR+ (mmr inflation relative to divsion average) and maintain an MMR+ of at LEAST 150 so that win streaks as short as 3 wins can earn you skips past promos. Any account I make I usually earn 3 or 4 skips on my way to diamond and half of those are usually 2 division at a time skips. All this by managing my MMR+ and avoiding promos and auto losses in lobby due to trolls and what not. In fact, this method is so damn abusable its become the defacto method of quick climbing for many high level players for years now.

I've skipped divisions, but how do you skip promotions?

like after i finish a promotional series, i go from say silver 4 -> silver 2, fine, climb climb, in silver 1, doing promos... yay, win, gold 5. climb -> gold 5 promos -> oh wow, look at that, im in gold 3.

all my skips were through promos, so i have no idea how you skip them. if i dodge a promo series, "get my auto loss", and keep winning and re entering promos, how do i eventually leave the current division and enter something higher.

You can skip playing promos at all if your MMR+ is high enough and you are on a long enough win streak relative to said MMR+. Instead of saying "congrats you have earned a promo series, your next games will determine your fate" or what ever you get a message that says "congrats you have been promoted to 'x' division".

I usually only have to play about half my promo series on the way to diamond each time I do a new unranked to diamond one trick. Instead of having to go from gold 4 or whatever to gold 3 to gold 2 and so on up the ladder, I go from gold 4 0LP to gold 4 100LP, skip to gold 2 0LP, get to gold 2 100 LP, skip to gold 1, play to plat 5 promors, play the plat promos, play from plat 5 0 LP to plat 5 100LP, skip to plat 3, plat 3 0LP to plat 3 100LP, skip to plat 2, plat 2 to 100LP, play plat 1 promos, and so on like that.

You don't even know what MMR is...

MMR and ELO are the same thing.

Which is exactly what we are currently using...

The League system is a pointless coversheet that literally does absolutely nothing at all. LP? LP is a figment of your imagination, it means nothing below D1.

The PROBLEMS we are having with ranked have ALWAYS, for 6 seasons now, stemmed from the fact you USE an ELO system that was designed for games like Chess and MTG (individual on individual competition) in a team based game that cannot function with a system designed to only account for the actions of an individual. The system we use, the MMR/ELO system is literally incapable of ranking players according to their individual skill set. Its not actually possible for it to do this. It doesn't take into account a single individual skill metric. The only thing it uses is W/L record which is influenced by 4 other players on your team, making luck a huge factor in the way the current system functions.

All this is common knowledge mate...

Negative, you seem to be under the impression ELO and MMR are separate.

"If you have gold MMR and silver ELO"

Direct quote. I clarified for any one who chooses to read this thread what the systems actually are. That way they won't be confused by your post mate.
