Hey Riot, when you give Mordekaiser the rework he deserves

Malicious Metal··208 votes·6,860 views

Drop the duo lane Juggernaut shtick.

Don't go all like; Mordekaiser is a duo laner now so we'll rework him once more to fit this fantasy. No no, learn from this whole fiasco and actually try to give us a soul enslaving dark lord character and not another guinea pig.

Thanks.

Set free the Master of Metal from the shackles of a duo lane! A dark lord does not need to be guided by the hand at any point of the game!

Unless that hand belongs to Sona.

Melledoneus6 votes

There are two principles that guide Sona. People tend to follow those principles religiously.

As did Yasuo.

Anti poke shield, A wind wall that blocks AA's and projectiles, extremely high damage and very mobile.

He still does. It's even seen some competitive play. Most Yasuo's aren't brave enough to play him adc though.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

Well that's probably because he is typically unable to farm up as well as the enemy due to his only defensive skill allowing him to do so is on a 20 second cooldown.

Unless ofcourse you make it a kill lane. But there are much better options for that XinZhao JarvanIV Volibear

Slamurai Jack2 votes

It's definitely not that hard. You just need to be willing to assert your dominance and have a support that knows how to help you. It's a little rough until you have windwall but your trading is very strong once you do have it.

qetzel1 votes

Could you link me to that video. I would be interested in seeing how it works.

Slamurai Jack2 votes

The best thing I can give you for how to play it are these videos of Imaqtpie playing him bot lane. The game Yasuo adc was played competetively was interesting but you don't really learn how it works by watching it.

isn't this why players complain about champions with limitless mobility?

Slamurai Jack3 votes

Anyone who thinks Yasuo has "limitless" mobility is a fool. That mobility has an absurd amount of limits: Requires a target, can't be used on the same target again for at least 6 seconds, has a fixed distance and direction, and can be interrupted by any hard CC. The fact that it can only be used on an enemy is already an enormous limiter on his mobility. Compare that to Riven who can use her dashes in any direction at any time if you want a real champion with anywhere near "limitless" mobility. Yasuo's mobility is as "limitless" as Kalista's is.

Funnily enough certainlyt did actually intend for yasuo to be a botlaner during his design.

Well, CertainlyT tries to make all his champions viable in most lanes. Not a knock, but it's something he has said more than once.

ForeverLaxx6 votes

Which is a fine goal in and of itself as it encourages lane diversity, but unfortunately, CertainlyT accomplishes this by completely overloading the kit which makes them problems more often than not.

3TWarrior2 votes

I thought graves was pretty well done but needed his numbers tweaked...

well, his numbers have been tweaked....THRICE...and he's still top of the game...

it also feels unsettling that his Q no longer one-shots an entire wave...but let's be honest...that was way too much power for a marksman to have

ForeverLaxx2 votes

Sure, but Graves was still given a bunch of things he may not necessarily have had if CertainlyT wasn't in charge of it. Overall, the Graves redesign is fine and evokes the idea of a shotgun-toting badass but a few things stand out as being added for the sake of it. For instance, why does Q have to have a return blast of damage? Q detonating instantly when it impacts a wall is neat, but it's already proved an issue and was given a delay in the latest update so maybe it didn't need to be part of his budget. Plus, the self-knockback for his Ult, while thematic to the idea of the skill, is something else Riot has to consider when looking at his power level.

This is the sort of thing we talk about when CertainlyT overloads a kit. He'll toss in a bunch of seemingly innocuous things that build upon each other to create something stronger than it first appears on paper. Then the balance team has to deal with the relative nightmare that is balancing these champions without changing their kits too much in the process.

If his barrels weren't just a free 5 gold for anybody with ranged auto attacks, then he'd probably be primarily an ADC

Rendarkan2 votes

The only time I use barrels is either wanting to get quick mass gold income or speed boosts for hauling ass.

Truths.

Now he has Raise Morale on his Ultimate.

Not that anyone gets it, especially since it's the weakest of the three choices which would mean 1500 Serpents.

Slow on Barrels is fun tho

Evewynn12 votes

Morde was riot's failed attempt at making a kit shaped by the meta, which is a distasteful choice as the meta should arise naturally from the mechanics of the game itself (not the other way around).

however, having a kit that is benefitted from other champions being around is not a bad thing, I really like how morde W is now. However, things like gaining max exp regardless if an ally is around or not is just seeping power from his non-duo ability without being a very engaging or interesting mechanic.

aperson13 votes

Yeah, it's hard to make a kit defined by low range, 0 CC, and 0 mobility work without being defined by some element of teamplay since that's just about the only reliable element you can add. You can kind of see that's what CertainlyT was going for, but it was way out of line with Morde players' expectations.

I think a game where Morde ends up as a farm dependent duo laner because universally available systems enable melees to survive a traditional ADC + Support lane is pretty interesting. A game where Morde is a farm dependent duo laner because his kit has passives saying "Morde is a farm dependent duo laner, unlike all the other melee champs" is not. It feels forced and it limits future design space in that area.

They did something similar re: "Marksmen in the Jungle" with Kindred, but since Kindred were a new champ and there wasn't as much of a demand for variety in the jungle nobody really raised a fuss. The patience system could have led to some Marksmen becoming viable as junglers organically, but Kindred's release totally overshadowed a few off-meta builds (why use Twitch jungle when you can just play Kindred?). Graves/Quinn reworks just compounded this.

I'm probably overexaggerating, but it's fun to dream of what could have been...

NommyPancake6 votes

Nah, Mordekaiser doesn't need rework -- he needs "un-rework" :^)

Gentzer6 votes

Would I be right in saying Morde is played mostly in solo lanes right now anyway? It's obvious the community wants solo lane Kaiser.

I mean, it matches his fantasy.

A dominating will, subjugating you under necromantic powers and a massive bloody mace as Mordekaiser crushes his enemies with his own force of will.

That doesn't really work when you have to add: "as long as someone holds his hand" to the end.

Emperor Time6 votes

The real reason Morde was pushed into bot is cause Rito wanted a team comprised fully of pentakill members.

ForeverLaxx2 votes

That's why you just run ADC Sona with Yorick support.

blfUvZ8Ybu5 votes

I agree.I miss old Morde.

Lord Graves III1 votes

I love new morde. ;_;

Old morde pissed me off. He built nothing but AP and vaguely hoped his enemies were dumb enough to let him get fed. I mean he felt good once you got fed but until then he kinda had a "nothing" kit. He still has the nothing kit but a second person to interact with in lane makes him more interesting to play, and I really really reallly really

really like the new Q sound. The cadence, the damage on the third hit. It feels really good mang. Also I'm a fan of Ghost dragon. I thought it was going to be dumb as hell but ghost dragon is awesome.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

Those are just two aspects of new Mordekaiser that are pleasing, but don't make up for other parts of Mordekaiser that needs to be changed in order for him to function as a no CC top lane Juggernaut, but while also being fair to fight against and have more decision aspects of playing against Mordekaiser besides "don't let him get close".

I agree with you though, the Q and R changes that introduced the Dragon and third hit on Q feel really nice, but I feel like he needs changes in some other areas as well.

Lord Graves III1 votes

Does Morde need changes? Sure.

Id still argue hes in the best place he has been for the entirety of my league of legends career. (Since season 2)

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

I don't disagree with you there, he's in a wonderful spot right now. The sustained damage, build-up-to-massive-damage approach is the best for Mordekaiser, and much easier to balance around, in my opinion.

Riot wants to keep his duo-lane identity in tact, but the meta just doesn't allow two melee characters in the bot lane, especially when the carry has no form of cc or mobility (or even slows).

Almost every adc played right now has a slow or dash/jump/displacement. Mordekaiser has none of that, which makes him super heavily reliant on his support, as well as making him vulnerable to ganks.

In top lane, that doesn't matter as much since your opponent will also have to get close to deal damage. But bot lane requires more range in order to survive, farm, poke, and trade effectively.

Just my thoughts here.

Lord Graves III1 votes

Hmm. I feel like his niche will swing around again. Meta comes and meta goes. People yelled at me for thinking kog maw was good 4 weeks ago. Meta is just meta man. Being in a lane that gives him access to dragon lets mordekaiser get pretty stupid if his team focuses on getting him a dragon.

Also, and maybe this is just my deep low silver high bronze heart's love of those two champs, but Leona Mordekaiser is a fun lane. Leona has a long enough CC chain to make up for morde, and they absolutely complement each other. Morde nails every proc of leonas passive while getting a speed boost in. The enemy can do nothing for 1 and a half seconds while leona holds them there and morde bullys their body and soul. Stacking the Q on minions before leona stuns is tricky, but if you pull it off its a goddamn death sentence. And keeping away from leona is much harder than keeping away from blitzcrank. And if you fail to keep away from leona, you have failed to keep away from morde. :D

Im a little drunk. I really like that lane.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

Yeah, you aren't incorrect with those points.

Kog'Maw has been good for a while, he just needs the right team and player.

I never thought of having Leona paired with Mordekaiser... Hmm... I feel if you have the right coordination, you could easily pull that off.

Lord Graves III1 votes

It is purely an all-in lane but its a pretty sweet all in.

When the lane works or even breaks even, you pretty much have to play "I cant see me loving nobody but you" with your support. Its lovely.

Kuroi863 votes

Honestly, Riot sort of had the right idea with Morde, they just didn't execute it right.

At the moment, there's honestly too few factors to consider when playing as or against Morde. He's more of a stat check champ, that's never fun to try and balance.

I've pondered some changes on Morde, though who knows when Morde will see the level of work he needs to put him into a good spot.

LatetotheRace2 votes

Mordekaisers kit does not in anyway resemble a duo lane. If they change it to where it would, say a marksmen's kit. He would simply cease to be Mordekaiser. This whole thing was disgusting and poorly planned. They did it so that there would be some sort of meta-break bot, and also to make the Pentakill team work. (PRevious Morde did)

Kuroi863 votes

They attempted the rework in order to add more decision making to Morde' laning phase other than stat checking. That said, while I applaud the ideal, the execution was doomed from the get go.

What Morde needs are tweaks to his kit that open zones of strength and weakness so his solo laning can be healthier and include more than just, "Is his W down? Yes? Gank!"

Lord Graves III1 votes

Morde has ALWAYS been a stat check champion. Hes usually been a stat check of the worst kind.

Am I absolutely out of my mind for thinking mordekaiser is in the best place he has been since.....ever? I started playing in season 2. Was there a magical time before then when morde was fun? Cause I was always angry and disappointed with morde until his rework came out.

Kuroi861 votes

Fun with Morde was when your stats were high and you could wreck someone.
The "rework" didn't fix this, though I do applaud the attempt. They were trying to introduce more elements of thought into trades and what not, they simply picked a method that people weren't fine with trying to go with.

Ralanr3 votes

Bring him back to mid. Make assassins fear the power of metal.

crippler381 votes

lol what if morde's ultimate summoned metal undead knights that his abilities would interact with, like 2 or 3 with each having half or a third of morde's stats respectively at max level. Leveling the skill would increase the statshare and duration of the ghosts

His q would make all knights move faster His w would apply to every knight letting mordekaiser run towards his target faster after swarming them with the ghosts His e would damage the knight very marginally but give him an overcharged shield if he hits the ghosts

That would make him tankier, harder to kite, take some power away from his ultimate so he can't steal the adc or anyone and just become a near unkillable monster machine, and so and such.
