Can we stop with appeals to the majority?

Knowing that the majority of players like or dislike something is not going to convince ME to like or dislike it. I am going to continue posting based on what I like or dislike. So really, all an appeal to the majority does is try to convince me that my feelings are invalid, which isn't going to work, because there are some widely popular positions that are also completely wrong.

In most cases, no. But in some cases, yes. Sooo... it depends, I guess?

If a majority of players think Zed (or Illaoi) is frustrating, that convinces me it's a frustrating champ to play against. If a majority of players think Zed is OP, I'll call them out on their bullshit.

In the case of SoloQ vs DynQ, I think most people are misinformed, exaggerating or unable to hold a valid reasoning, and that they attribute to DynQ unrelated or barely related problems. Maybe I'm arrogant... But so I'm not convinced by the mass of people on these boards. (And I'm not even sure they are a representative majority, but that's yet another issue.)

Thank you for a rational response. Faith in some small subsection of the boards is restored :)

Unpopular opinion: I think in most cases, yeah it does. Appealing to the majority is what makes sure that more people come in and play the game, making sure that Riot has enough money to continue making content that we love.

I think that appealing to the majority should STOP however when they stop making content that their original players love and when everything new they create is to appeal to the broadest market ever.

Just speaking in general and not things that have to do with League of Legends, I would say not really. I don't care much what other people think irl, so I wouldn't care if the "majority" like something, if I don't like it, I don't like it. It's only when it's something I'm passionate about like League that I would care enough to think of the bigger picture

I'm talking about people who say essentially "You should like DQ because the majority does" or "The majority dislikes DQ (and so should you)."

No, no I shouldn't. I have my own opinions about what I like and I'm entitled to them no matter what the majority thinks. That may or may not mean it's a good idea -- we shouldn't necessarily DO something just because I want it -- but I'm not wrong just because I'm not in the majority.

Pretty sure they stopped that when they released dynamic queue :^)

How do you know if I'm complaining about people who say "Majority dislikes DQ" or "Majority likes DQ"?

The majority wanted solo queue. Riot didn't accept that. The majority lost.

The majority of who? Of boards? Certainly. Of the larger player base? I have no idea and frankly it doesn't matter.

Of the larger playerbase. If you played the game you could tell. It does matter. You're saying riot appeals to the majority . I just proved that they usually don't.

Nope. I'm complaining about people on the boards who use appeal to the majority.

I don't agree that you just proved anything -- you just stated that I should be able to tell that you're right.

I'll agree that they usually don't, though.

In real sport the majority always follow the minority. Cause best players are the minority and every players want to imitate the best players. Bronzes and silvers (majority of players (80-90%)) should not be able to influence the future of the game, at least not for ranked games.

It convinces me only that the majority believe something to be so. Generally people mix emotion into their rational arguments so I do consider it to be constructive in some sense. People consider Zed to be OP. Data says he's not, however there is the perception that he is, which suggests something is amiss viscerally. Are they sick of seeing him? Is he frustrating? etc?

Having said that it can be difficult to tell what the majority think. People/opinions tend to form clusters in the real world and I see no reason for people to not do that in league too. Consider if I am told that Zed is OP. Next time I see Zed his 'OPness' is highlighted. I now have a greater chance of attributing things Zed does to him being OP (i.e., greater than the chance of the pre-existing heuristics/biases). Now I think he is OP and my friends do too. Surely if my friend group thinks so, then everybody else must too?!

This does make it difficult to ascertain whether the majority is the majority they claim to be using only anecdotal evidence. Dynamic Queue is a prime example: Boards make it seem like the majority do hate it, but Riot's data suggests only a small subset hate it.

This, too. I see appeals to the majority made by both sides of the argument "Majority likes DQ" "No majority hates it."

How about instead, we acknowledge that SOME people like it, that SOME people dislike it, and that some people like and dislike it. We can accept that those who dislike it have legitimate reasons; then we can figure out what those reasons are and fix them.
