When can supports stop buying sight stone?

Doesn't the upgraded warding totem do almost the same thing? Sure, you can't place down 3 in a row, but you can plausibly place down 6+ before needing to back.

I get that you need someone to clear wards on your team, but why make the champion with the lowest in come buy an item like sightstone? If the jungler just got the red trinket, he'd do his job better and you'd have basically the same amount of wards. Not that a lot of junglers don't do that anyway.

I just don't get why supports NEED a sightstone as opposed to an upgraded yellow trinket. You save 550 gold for basically the same mechanic.

Am I wrong? I don't usually play support, but I just KNOW from the few past games that I'd get bitched and moaned at for not picking up a sightstone.

because you really cant wait for mid game to have decent ward coverage

In games I buy I Sightstone, I drop 50+ wards. In games I buy a Trinket upgrade, i drop 35+ wards.

The Sightstone is superior for supporting.

I love this line of yours. You realize sightstone saves you so much gold in the long run. A sightstone is equal to 10.66 wards. Once you buy that 11th ward, you're using more gold then you would if you got the sightstone. If you're not placing that many wards, you are supporting wrong. Warding wins games kids

...And my point was that there's a cheaper more gold efficient alternative.

except its not more efficient. you have to wait until level 9 to get it and to top it off, it needs time to recharge where as sightstone you get 5 wards right away to use once you base.. if you are not buying 11 wards by the time you hit 9, you are bad and should feel bad. sightstone is a must as support. god help any people on your team if you don't buy one

you can stop buying sightstone as soon as you can get vision of the map equivalent to anyone on the enemy team who is using sightstone.

If you'd rather do that with green wards, that's fine. If you CAN do that with upgraded yellow, that's fine, but realistically you'll need green ward supplements to do that.

When I play, we have a support with sightstone, top (usually me), with upgraded yellow trinket, mid with upgraded yellow trinket, jungler with red trinket (sometimes buys sightstone or buys a lot of pink wards), and a bot with orb. Warding is a team effort and sight stone is even more helpful because:

Sightstone is strong because the cooldown between the 2nd and 3rd ward does not exist. What happens when you place a ward, it gets swept and now you have 1 charge and have to wait for the 3rd. It's too unreliable, whereas sightstone has no cooldown.

Level 9 is too late, you need the luxury of being able to drop 3 wards at a time (and a 4th quickly after if necessary) and while you have the lowest gold income, you also need the least items to do your job effectively. You also have more time to roam than others, so are better equipped to use red at important locations.

Yellow trinket is amazing ... for everyone except support. It'll never do the job as well as Sightstone + Red trinket for supps.
