Why I personally don't like Ekko

ElJanitorFrank··31 votes·2,861 views

Clarity. I can dodge his ultimate and his W fine, but there is one huge factor that people don't always point out.

When I'm just laning against an Ekko, he might hit me with his Q and go a little aggressive. All I can do is fight back or back up a bit, whatever. If I'm by my tower I might as well back off before he can proc his passive. It usually goes like this:

"Uh oh, look like he did anyway, oh we- HOLY HELL HE DID 1/3 OF MY HP. Okay, gotta try to not trade with him..."

"He's going agressive again, better back off, his Q put me down to 1/3, good thing I'm safe under tower Ekko auto attacks me and I explode"

It's just crazy that he can do that. His power is in the all in, like most assassins are, and I can respect that. But his poke (Q) does an EXTREMELY small amount of damage compared to his all in, and his all in doesn't require many more steps. It's extremely misleading and I'm just sitting there wondering where my health went every single time.

And the other thing, his slows. Man, you really wanted to make sure you can't escape, didn't you? If he only had a slow on his passive, he would be hard to escape from. He also has a slow on his Q, and on his W.

Why.

He does NOT need this much sticking power. At first when I saw Ekko, I thought he looked like a burst mage/assassin, but one that needed some set up time. So the slows made sense to me. I was wrong, this guy is just a burst mage with high mobility and a lot of slows, he doesn't need them.

All I REALLY want, is for his passive to be toned down. That is such an easy slow to pull off it shouldn't be that powerful. I understand it decays, so it only averages about a 40% slow overall, but it also speeds him up. And why slows? People keep complaining about mobility, but do you know what the only way to counter a slow is? With gap closers.

Here's what I would change about Ekko after having played a few games against him: Make his passive very slightly less strong. Tone down the max slow to 50%, since it also speeds him up and 80% is kind of ridiculous. And take away his W's passive. There is absolutely no reason for that to exist. He is a burst mage that requires set up, there is no reason to give him a 2nd passive that ALSO gives him dps. All it does is make you explode a lot sooner, and it's really not needed at all.

He is Katarina Riven Leblanc combined, I prefer playing against a korean challenger Teemo smurf than laneing against an Ekko

Singing Lark2 votes

Are there even korean challenger Teemo smurfs?

Pheonixwish16 votes

Legend says they're so good they're invisible to the naked eye.

(More on topic his passive could pass as an ability itself, like gnar's w...except about 17x more powerful.)

feels more like they combined ahri and zedd in one kit and he is about twice as op as either of them. u cant run from him his cc is god like and the only lane i have beating him was with cass still lost the game cause dispit him being down as heck 30 min into the game he can one the entire teasm of tanks and squishy's. The thing that strikes me as funny is he is fun to play and i enjoyed him this week (he is free) but damn if i havent ever seen a champ so stacked and overpowered. LOve his concept just nerf nerf him a bit pls

Been noticing a lot of Ekko's just building Bruiser because his numbers and CC are so fucking broken that he doesn't need to build full AP to be able to blow everyone up.

It's fucking stupid and I hate Riot for even releasing him in that kind of state.

Meeks0111 votes

I built him full AD and I dealt equal magic and physical damage.

Retillin1 votes

Yeah this is my biggest problem with him. (well besides "mobility") How can a champion be built bruiser and still end up being an assassin?

Honestly I wouldn't mind if his 3-hit passive was increased to 4 hits. I know it's gypsylord's "trademark" or whatever but having a healthy champion is a lot more important than that. Right now Ekko can land Q1, then immediately E+AA you and proc his passive for an undodgeable Q return, which is easily 50-60% of your HP early on. It's super obnoxious, especially considering how fast the first Q hit comes out.

His Q is mid range, with it extending very slowly for some of it. It's also fairly predictable. Your issue is that your falling for his typical lane combo which is getting hit by both Q's then he e's into you and backs off with the speed. What you need to do is avoid the Q return at all costs. It does negligible damage if it hits you only the first way.

He has his Q slow because his W slow is not good. It's a situational ability that has a 3 second, visible prep time, and then generates a slowing field. It's incredibly easy to not be hit by it. Overall, that's Ekko's kit. Easily dodged abilities for themost part (Q, W, R) but if you get hit, you get punished hard.

Orbv6 votes

The note about his slow field having visible prep time is not necessarily true. It has 1600 range from Ekko, his hologram/ghost moves behind him 100 range. Here are some comparative champions:

Lux Q range is 1175

Morgana Q range is 1175

Xerath Q at max range is 1400

Corki Ult Range is 1225

Ezreal Q is 1150

Heimerdinger W range is 1325

Anyway, it's further than all of those. Ekko could stand 100 range from a bush, cast it, and you still won't see it until the .5 - 1 sec before. It makes it as visible as Veigar's stun, except that it stuns everything in its proximity, it becomes much harder to escape.

Correct, he can do it from out of vision. And you should be careful of that when he is not in lane. But, if he is in lane, he physically can't do it without you seeing. You also see the slow field, whether you see his shadow casting it or not, a good amount before it actually lands. In my experience, it's actually very hard to land this skill and almost have to depend on coming back to lane or ganking and hoping they have absolutely no clue you are coming. Otherwise, it's predictable.

It's given so much utility because of how hard it is to land. However, I agree the passive is relatively unneeded.

ModAcademy Kayn5 votes

His slows are a little over the top. I'd be fine with the removal of his W passive too. He has the same problem as Zed does with farming. (That problem being efficient farming even while being pressured)

MarhsallLee675 votes

I keep forgetting that his W even has a passive. It's so out-of-place and his actual passive does enough damage, I have no clue why it's even there. And this is coming from somebody who thinks Ekko only needs a few minor changes to become relatively balanced.

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

Same. I realize he is a high skill cap champ, but he gets a bit too much from his all ins.

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

You know... damage based off missing health will NEVER be stronger than Max Health. Zed deals Max Health, Ekko deals Missing Health. That's why Zed has a CD on his passive, and Ekko doesn't for his W passive.

What people also never mention: Ekko's W passive deals Magic Damage, and all of his damage is Magic. In order to counter Ekko, you build MR. Zed deals Magic Damage with his passive, but the rest of his damage is all physical. In order to counter him, you build AR, but then you still don't have much MR to block his passive's damage. Having two different types of damage is normally stronger because the enemy must build AR and MR. See Kog'Maw, Corki, Jax, Poppy, Darius, and many others.

Just thought I would throw that in!

Ventira2 votes

It takes an extraordinary amount of MR to mitigate Ekko's ridiculously high damage output, thereby weakening you to the enemy adc. And need I remind us all of the friggin ridiculous item known as void staff?

TheFameAnimal3 votes

I had a game the other day where Ekko would just e, then auto me and just delete me, and then ult back to full health -_-

SouL1ess5 votes

TBH, if Ekko can do that because he was that fed, many other assassin would give you a worse nightmare.

TheRakkun3 votes

I hate how when you are winning in a duel against him and he just ults away and gets a massive heal, letting him win the trade 100% of the time :)

SolusInCadere2 votes

Why I don't personally like ekko: he has an MS buff, three slows, two of which are AOE, and AOE stun, a dash, and two blinks. WTF is that! He has more mobility and CC than Leblanc and Zed combined, while dealing Katarina levels of damage, all while having more sustain in his ult than DrMundo does. WTF is that!

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

Wut... I don't see how Ekko has anywhere near the sustain that Mundo has.

SolusInCadere1 votes

When it comes to % of health regeneration from their ultimates, it's close to the same. That said, Mundo has a lot more health, but he isn't an assassin who can burst multiple people down simultaneously.

Soraka I am not liking to hear that you can explode with your health as easily. Would like to be there when I try or maybe when you try to have a friend Champion me Soraka so after the first health reduction, I Soraka could heal back to a % which might allow you to survive another health reduction life health loss with Ekko. I have faced Ekko as a enemy in lane, and I stay far away from him to there is zero time turning backwards. Sure, might be tower guarding more, but at least the following I f I can help it will never happen again.

I Soraka was bottom with Ziggs . Went to top to heal a Vi and a MonkeyKing if I remember correctly (there were two allies to heal with Clarity) and of course health. Made my rounds and made sure before leaving both and full bars to work with. Then I decided after sharing most of my life in healing the two in the top lane I was going to heal along the river as I returned to the bottom lane. Notice there is the sucking life out of people Karthus in middle lane as the enemy opposing Ekko in the middle lane. I manage to stay far away enough to be out of the time warp directly, but not far enough to not be affected. So, Ekko claims to Champion two Champions in one turn of time backwards, forcing a decision as the team support, which he is not as Soraka am team support for the game on low health; clearly not capable of a time backwards trip!!! Ekko can care less, turn time backwards and there I Soraka am with low health for another air sucking my life away go around with Karthus Karthus, And, Ekko has in one click of the mouse earned the assist for my death which Karthus Karthus dealt.

If were for me to decide, there would be much more I would limit, and % down in regards to Ekko.

Zed has better poke, all in and is manaless...

Drunk Rummate1 votes

his Q poke does a huge amount of damage actually. are you sure you're not confusing some of the Q poke damage with his all in? because if he hits you on the return damage with his Q that's a huge chunk of his burst.

the rest of his damage is highly reliant on landing both sides of his Q, because his E will only proc his passive if both Qs land unless he wants to stick around trying to auto you a second time which is really dangerous

SolusInCadere1 votes

He also has a W :3

Ticking Death1 votes

How does one beat Ekko? CC or jungle ganks. Much like Leblanc, Zed, and Yasuo, Ekko has a lot of up-front damage, but melts if you manage to catch him. I agree that his damage is a bit obnoxious, but it takes a decent amount of skill to play him properly, imo. As far as his abilities go, I feel like his ult is an unreliable form of damage because the enemy team can easily avoid his ghost. It's not that hard. Having up-front damage on his passive and W prevents him from having a severe lack of damage when only two of his spells can hit semi-reliably.

Eventually, people will learn how to play against him. It's just a matter of time before he and the game find an equilibrium that works.

Ventira1 votes

If by melts you mean he just presses R, regardless of whether he's cc'd by anything other than a knock up, and walks away scot free than yes.

Ticking Death1 votes

Stuns and snare would accomplish the same task. Yes, a snare works because he has to move back to his location. It's no different than Leblanc using her Distortion or Zed getting away with a shadow.

Ventira1 votes

Snares too, than. His ult still allows him to get away far too easily though.

GG Noob Team1 votes

The gost is not easly dodgable, it is bugged as fuck and literally glitches and blink from the point to point, making it impossible to track his ghost in some cases.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

I'm fine with the slow on his w, or at least in comparison to what really galls me which is the speed boost he gets. Its incredibly frustrating to have an Ekko dead to right only for him to proc his passive and suddenly become Rammus and run away at the speed of sound.

Panwar1 votes

You are saying that your problem with Ekko is that you have a hard time learning that he does his burst damage on the 3 stack of his passive?

SolusInCadere1 votes

Even if you know that, what do you do about it? He throws down the arena (W), then dashes to you and it with E. Now he is at point blank range to fire his Q on a stunned target. There's three charges right their without double hitting Q, though that will happen too, and u were CC'd the whole time...

Meeks0111 votes

His E can easily deal 1000 magic damage. Lich-bane + his E's damage, plus his W's passive, plus Luden's Echo.

His W is overloaded as fuck. Slow into a 2.25 seconds stun at rank one? Massive shield? Missing health damage? Big AOE? The fuck was Rito thinking. Shen's W is just a shield and that's it, but Ekko gets 3 more things with it, plus a 50 mana cost at rank 1 and 70 at rank 5.

JZPorkins1 votes

for him to proc the W passive you'd have to be under 30% health. chances are that E + LB would've killed you anyways.

Epilogue of Life1 votes

Riot has combined the things that made Talon , Zed , and Leblanc annoying, all into one champion...and then gave that champ a huge heal+enhanced Gnar W as passive...IDK who thought that was balanced, but here's a tip: fire that guy. Or kill him, actually.

actually for whatever retarded reason it DOES NOT decay (neither the slow nor the speed up)
