The contradiction of balance: casual vs. competition

  1. Riot has contradictory design goals with the game right now, which leads to increased toxicity, lower rank integrity and lower game quality.

  2. The first of these problems is the casualization of the ranked queue. Dynamic queue has been pushed on the playerbase as a way to get friends into ranked - which is more important to casual gamers. Serious gamers would have prefered solo queue, to test their abilities as an individual, and full 5v5 team queue, which tests their ability to participate in a true competitive format. In no case would a serious League player prefer that solo and group MMRs be mixed and compared on the same ladder, because then you have no idea what that MMR is measuring.

  3. However, the game itself has become anything but casual. In fact, it has become extremely punishing, so punishing in fact that sometimes to play in mid-high elo (plat) is a frustrating chore rather than fun. Long death timers, jungle autotimers, minion autopush, very large differences between highest and lowest win rate champs, etc. have made it so that the team that makes a mistake stays behind and stays behind hard. This is especially true for large (3+) premades vs. large premades, as the coordination and strategy that a mid or high elo premade offers allows for immensely powerful snowballing. Even minor mistakes are more costly than ever, and more frustratingly, it's the 1st mistake that's the costliest.

  4. Because of these contradictory goals, the game now meets none of the needs of either casual players or competitive players. Casual players are easily turned off by the snowballing, pick-or-ban champs, extremely punishing gameplay, etc. while competitive players have nowhere to go if they want to play as a serious 5v5 team or test their true individual performance.

  5. This has led to the phenomena that was described earlier as "casual tryhard". This is the type of player that NO ONE wants on their team, since they neither invest the time to be truly competitive, yet they want easy results and rage when they don't get them. These types have always been around, but this season has led to an explosion of these types. Just look at all the bronze 5's and silver 5's who think they can 1v1 plats and diamonds when simultaneously whining about elo hell. Their presence leads to lower game quality for everyone.

I agree Riot seems to have goals that work at cross purposes. IMO they want something that looks and feels competitive but plays casual, and overall changes to game mechanics and champion design seem to be moving everything in this direction.

The next step will be replacing Elo with something fluffier and with a lot less accountability.

feels competitive? check. plays casual? till about level 15 then you enter the "troll zone" where you are placed against people who regardless of their actual intentions are happier ruining the game for their team rather than playing and enjoying the game, now in ranked I would expect everyone to be serious or semi serious (if your simply gagueing your personal skills as in my case with season 4), however this is 75% of the time incorrect, normally as my friends and others on this board state there are Rank trolls whos main goal is to make rank such a difficult and senseless grind that your almost required to enter ranked with a team of 5 just to avoid them but this is just my opinion

dynamic queue makes it even harder.

5v5 ranked teams - everyone is fully serious about winning. solo queue - not everyone is serious but the chances are even for both teams and for every individual, making it a statistically fair ranking.

dynamic queue - neither is true. it is neither statistically fair (not all individuals experience the same game due to varying premades) and neither is everyone fully serious.

What I meant by "play casual" is a lack of subtle/intricate mechanics to learn the game, learn a champion, etc. It's more about really big, obvious effects and button mashing.

It's all a cheap way to deal with the entire non-pro section. The pros make more money for riot, so they've adopted a: "dynamic queue for everyone, all our attention to pro play" approach which makes the game amazing to watch at the professional level, and a torture-game you wouldn't want to wish on your worst enemy for the not-pro player.

I don't get it. It takes less resources to keep the old queue in place because no new matchmaker algorithms need to be implemented.

Of course there's also the balance changes which is an entirely different story.

Basically, the game has become too punishing to play casually while not being serious enough to have comparative ranks.

Because now then can completely forget or ignore everything that isn't LCS. It would probably save money in the long run
