Are we talking about the entire champion or just the hook? Because OP is strictly talking about the hook and so was I. No point in bringing up Pyke's E or W because they're not the ability we're talking about.
If you want to bring them up, you can't use E/W while charging the hook, you still have to wait a full 3 seconds before reaching max range on your Q. If you want to burn your only escape/engage ability to hold a hook in someone's face for 3 full seconds, you won't have a good time against a competent team. If you want to short-charge his Q for a faster hook, you're going to have much less range than a Thresh hook with the added bonus of possibly not comboing your E/Q together.
You don't have to account for a units velocity nearly as much as Thresh must cause Pyke lacks the super massive delay.
-
Thresh's hook windup is half a second whereas Pyke's hook requires a full three seconds to reach max charge.
-
At full charge Pyke's Q reaches 1,100 range whereas Thresh always has 1,100 range, so it essentially takes Pyke 3 seconds to reach the same distance hook that Thresh does.
Pyke's invisibility and dash allows him to get much closer and negate the charge up to make the hook harder to react to and dodge then the spin and toss of Thresh.
- Yes, Pyke can move while channeling but not during the action of actually throwing the hook. So he can reposition himself, but he still has a 1,100 range immobile casting hook. If anything, Pyke's hook is technically worse because the only thing he can do is slow himself and telegraph that his hook is coming, only to wait 3 seconds to have the same functionality of a Thresh hook. (Same range, can't move while casting)
As a matter of fact it took 0 attempts to get good with the Pyke hook because its a very easy ability to do well with.
- It's also a very easy ability to dodge because you have a full 3 second window to react to it. On top of the fact that it doesn't stun for 1.5 seconds (like Thresh's hook) it also doesn't fully combo into E if someone has enough MS or a light dash, whereas Thresh can get a guaranteed Flay since his Q actually stuns people. You being good with the hook doesn't remove the downsides of a three second channel.
