Why is there a rental option for Skin/Champion shards?

It's basically an option for destroying the shard for no return value. Why does it exist? In what situation would this ever make sense?

To see if you like it in game I guess. Still better off rerolling three imo. Or disenchanting
It's almost as good a deal as the temporary emotes.
