With Sona specifically, i've found playing her AP (with support item/sightstone of course) and aggressively is the way to go. This is by no means a one size fits all advice. It's my playstyle and a viable option, at least in lower elo. Your mileage may vary.
Here are two recent games I got S+ in:

Overall with any support, you want to get a few kills, 0-2 deaths, a majority of assists in comparison to overall team kills. For warding, you want to be doing it frequently. You also want to be clearing enemy wards as much as possible. You'll want a bare minimum of 25 cs.
Don't get frustrated. Check your stats after every game. Pay attention to where you are lacking. Good luck.
Edit: I was looking at your recent Sona games. At 30 minutes you are under warding. You should be in the 20's at the very least, not the teens. Also don't go blue trinket. Go sweeper. You need to be clearing wards. Blue is usually picked up by the marksmen/mid.

For the love of god please build
,when someone takes my support role and doesn't build this i want to strangle them.
I know the feeling. It's my number one pet peeve in League. It seems like bronze level supports rarely if ever buy one, at least in normals. Or maybe that's just the weekend crowd. My brief stint in ranked last year, I placed silver and things seemed "normal." No idea why one tier lower refuses the idea.
