Can we talk about resouces? My Problem with Fury

I just saw a vid on Youtube that kind of sums up my issues with the fury mechanic?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ44hVeVdEw

Fury is something I'd expect from a raging barbarian or in a berserker's bloodlust. The name of it denotes anger, rage and emotion. But the mechanics of it in game seem wrong. Let's start with the color: orange. Now I don't hate orange, but I don't think it's right for fury. Annoying, maybe, but not fury. I google "orange emotion" and some of the top hits all say warmth and happiness, or energy and happiness.

Yeah, that's right out the window from the get go.

Then there's another thing that bugs me about fury: it's always being linked to healing. Be it trynd's Q, reksai's passive, or an enhanced version of renekton's Q (which heals less without and more with). Can someone please tell me what part of "fury" says "imma healing myself now"? Usually if someone gets angry to the point he's furious, he doesn't go on a healing tirade. Normally what he does is starts yelling or punching stuff until the fury subsides.

So what does this have to do with the video? Well when I hear something called fury, I have certain expectations. Warm fuzzy feelings and self healing don't come to mind traditionally. When I see a resource called fury, I expect it to be linked to something, well furious in nature. What I expect is gnar's rage or shyvana's dragon form, but even then the second isn't perfect. Why can shyvana only get angry at level 6? Why does she find being a dragon thereputic? Why does hitting things in dragon form prolong her furious state instead of help her vent quicker? I read enough of rosewater's articles and seen enough Extra Credits to know that mechanics matter. But on the other hand, if the devs decide to use a work with a certain meaning and wants to tell a specific story, they should have the understanding of what the meaning of the words they choose are and pick something that appropriately describes the end result they are hoping for.

That's my problem with fury as both a name and as a functional mechanic. It promises one thing, but delivers another. If riot wants to keep the mechanic, that's fine but I think it's fair to ask them to name it something more in line with how its used and the results it achieves.

Words have meaning. This is important. If words didn't have meaning then language is screwed because no one is exactly sure what other people are saying. This is why we hate pathological liars. With that in mind, if the meaning of what you are saying and the nature of what is it are maligned, you need to fix one or the other.

I'm not sure the point behind making Rek'Sai have fury, but Tryndamere and Renekton's kits and themes are surrounded around being angry, evil, and generally brutish in every way. I feel like, for most of the time, fury is used and demonstrated properly in the game (for the few champions that actually have fury as a resource mechanic).

I guess we should rename mana to, since that makes feelings of magic come up, and what's magical about Olaf throwing an axe at your face? What's magical about Darius hitting you with his axe?

While we're at it, Ignite needs to be renamed, since it obviously doesn't instant kill plant life or start fires. Same with Flash, none of my champions flash people when I use it.

It's a game. Certain meanings and connotations are ignored in favor of balance and game health, along with readability. If I read "Shyvana has 100 Fury" I know she is powerful at that time. If I read "Shyvana has 100 Mildly Ticked Off Points" or "Shyvana has 'roid Rage" I spend extra time reading that and trying to figure out what that means as opposed to something simple and more direct.

You're a pseudointellectual watching pseudointellectual youtube videos. He's not just pretentious, he's performing extremely low level analysis but acting like it's a revelation. It's hilarious.

Anyways. your points are just emotions with no real logic behind them, I'll take specific ones.

  • Shyvana can be seen as having her fury building until level 6 where it allows for the transformation. This is why she starts 6 with full rage. She's been seething, it boils over, dragon.

  • Generally people who are hitting things are angry and they seldom calm down mid-swing. How would someone calm down while smashing the head of another person? Similarly, you can see the dragon form as being naturally a bit depleting, it is after all, a dragon form, thus it drains her energy and vigor if she's not constantly in the heat of things.

Okay, you make zero logical points after and just refer to some other pseudointellectual garbage who I am not going to bother to read. You then never say what it is that is promised and that is not delivered. You just make general statements and imply you have said something of meaning when you haven't. You then repeat yourself a few times in different ways. It's a) redundant and b) useless because your statements have no meaning to begin with.

You then end with something really stupid, like, oh my god I want to smack you. You try to be structurally interesting with two short statements. And then you make a completely baseless statement about why "people hate pathological liars" and how words need to have meaning.

First, wordplay and using words in different senses and meaning is actually a cornerstone of our language and it is our most lauded quality in language. Shakespeare is Shakespeare because he plays with words ceaselessly and many times you don't understand the meanings in them if they are taken at face value.

Second, you have no evidence that pathological liars are hated, let alone, if they were hated, that "being unable to understand them" vs "because they cause financial and personal ruin" is actually the cause. That bottom paragraph, that's where you show you're not an intellectual yet and that you can't say anything important or meaningful.

Right now you are not even a human being. You are a conduit for the words of other people, who also aren't that bright. How about you get original and build real discourse. Trash.

Let's start with the color: orange. Now I don't hate orange, but I don't think it's right for fury.

Orange is the predominant color of fire - which is mostly where the warmth comes from. Also danger.

Most colors have a very large number of good and bad connotations, so just stopping at a few isn't great.

Also it's more readable than red, because you can mute/tone/tint orange with it still reading as orange, where red tends to look pink if you set it up for a clear resource display.

Then there's another thing that bugs me about fury: it's always being linked to healing.

Rather than concentrating on the aspects of a skill/capacity/power in a void, it's important to look at the play-style it pushes.

The important thing with Wolverine or the Incredible Hulk having a lot of HP/5 isn't that readers/audiences focuses on the positive, non-destructive aspects of the healing itself. It's that it allows those characters to be fearless, taking swords and bullets like a Honey Badger can take cobra venom - preventing a lot of dangerous, hostile circumstances from deterring them, and allowing them to make a lot of brave/fearless plays.

For the healing at least i always saw it as "You hurt me and tha pissed me off, so now I;m going to force ny body to heal your damage away out of spite."
