Jhin's passive is so odd...

Shroom Junkie··2 votes·1,096 views

Jhin’s gun - Whisper - chambers four shots, the last of which always crits and applies extra damage based on a portion of his target’s missing health. After firing all four shots, Jhin takes a moment to reload. Jhin’s crits deal less damage than normal, and his attack speed doesn’t actually scale with attack speed. Instead, Jhin gains attack damage from any attack speed and crit chance he earns through itemization and runes, while crits give him a burst of movement based on his attack speed.

I mean, why? I get the first passive part, reloading and critting after every 4th shot and missing health but... why the next part? His crits deal less than normal... eh, weird but okay... and his attack damage scales with attack speed and crit... why? Does it have to do with attack speed being super OP on him? I mean, it seems like it wouldn't be that bad, because he'd have to reload after 4 shots anyway. I haven't tried him yet so I can't say much but... it just seems... strange. Not looking for buffs or nerfs on someone who hasn't even been tested yet, but if a Rioter or PBE tester could explain to me why its so odd and complicated that would be nice.

Because Jhin's entire playstyle and aesthetic is about being slow and deliberate. He takes his time to properly set up every little thing so it's perfect: he strives for quality over quantity.

Here's how I would explain the way his kit interacts.

Attack speed, is functionally useless if you have an limited number of attacks with a reload mechanic, like Graves for example. Firing off all your shit quickly is great, but then you have to reload. So instead, why not let attack speed give him a different bonus, so more damage. He obviously wants critical strike for his passive, so how do you get 100 critical strike?

The issue is that with the attack speed being not very helpful, you have little desire to opt for the zeal items, so now you get straight damage out of it as well as your bonus movement speed scaling off of attack speed.

Now you've solved the problem of attack speed on a champion that it doesn't work very well on.

As for the reduced crit damage, that's pretty simple in that if you're guaranteed a critical strike on every 4th auto, it probably shouldn't do as much damage as people who need to have the randomness come through for them.

There's an extra part to the passive that didn't get included, I assume it's real as it came straight from gypsylord, but here it is.

Beauty in Death - Killing blows spawn a blooming flower on the corpse that reveals and slows enemies nearby before detonating for damage.

I think that part of the passive will be intriguing to see how it works once I get to test him on PBE.

While I like your Idea unfortunately this isn't correct. He does have a passive similar to graves but unlike graves his auto's are still affected by attackspeed and aren't naturally fast which is why they specifically reference how horrible his waveclear is during the early.

So there's that.

I think it's more of an idea of making an interesting kit than it is making something that's just average. I can say he's more interesting to me because he can't use attackspeed except for damage.

You have to realize that many ADC's have cookie cutter builds that don't differ much from one to the other. And it's difficult to strive away from this without either requiring unique items, or completely change the function said champion does.

I don't see the stale combination of AD, AS, and crit chance, leaving the ADC space any time soon. But we can change how champions might interact with the stats given to them. This allows us to have a champion that isn't AS focused, but can still make use of the items given to him, without requiring much revamp. And over all, it allows us to redefine what a Critical strike means to a particular champion. We have seen this with Ashe and with Graves, and with the new ER. And now we have a new champion that can personalize their definition of a critical strike.

I guess now he can buy pretty much anything that augments attacks and do a crap load of damage with it. I think this sounds cool, I just hope he can deal damage quick enough to avoid getting burst down.

It kinda works like Graves' passive

Yes but it will hit like a truck.
