Well, first, Riot DID say his Gameplay would change. That's the point, it's a VGU.
VGU= Visual Gameplay Update
If they didn't want to change him, they wouldn't have done this.
As for the Riven comparisons, I'll start with the Q's.
The new Aatrox remains still while using his Q, while Riven moves with each cast. That's one difference. The next difference between their Q's is the new Aatrox displaces/knocks up for EACH Q, while Riven's only does on the Third. We haven't had it confirmed or denied, but Riven can jump terrain with her third Q, while from what it appears thus far the new Aatrox cannot (I admit that all we have to go on is the brief gameplay snippets on his Champion Update page right now).
Next, their W's.
Riven stuns in a roughly circular area around her upon use; the new Aatrox's W is a telegraphed CC that resets the position of the first enemy champ or large monster hit after a delay. Riven's CC is instantaneous and affects all enemies around her, and the new Aatrox's does not, only the first target struck. There IS a difference.
The E's.
The dashes are very similar in terms of the distance they cover, but the additional effects they grant are different.
Riven is granted a shield for 1.5 seconds, and this dash, unlike her third Q, CANNOT traverse over most forms of terrain. It can pass over things like Yorick's W wall or other similar temporarily generated terrain/walls (Might need to test it to be sure), but solid terrain such as the walls of Summoner's Rift, it cannot pass. Also, thicker generated terrain (Like Trundle's pillar, and I think Anivia's Ice wall) are too thick for her to slip through.
The new Aatrox gains AD and passively heals for a portion of damage (Similar to Rhaast, thus bringing him more in line with his fellow Darkin) and CAN cross small walls at the very least (Based upon the brief gameplay snippet in his Champion Update page, AND this makes him like his fellow Darkin Rhaast even more because of the wall-walking ability he and Kayn have).
The R's.
Riven is granted extra range on her AA's, W and E for a time, along with AD and a single cast of her Wind Slash execute-style ability.
The new Aatrox, upon activation fears nearby minions and is granted a small MS boost that leaves when in-combat. He also gains his old "Blood Well" revive EVERY TIME in his ult, rather than the less reliable method he has now. Riven is only granted a similar effect by purchasing a GA, while he has it largely on-demand (Whenever his ult is up).
