How many older players feel like they only play 2-5 champs due to reworks?

The Bad Touch·6/14/2019, 12:34:31 AM·38 votes·13,578 views

Rolling back the years to season 1 and season 2 I played just about every champ on the roster, and about every build for said champs. Be it AP Magewick, Triple Doran's Roaming Garen bot, 100% dodge Jax, Soraka support, Mana Tank Ryze, or insert X here. About anything you can come up with I tried and likely enjoyed at one point in time or another.

Flash forward to season 6-9 and the amount of champions I enjoy playing amount to... Jinx and Garen.

Now why is that you think? Used to love Ryze, Galio, Akali, Fiora, Soraka, Jax, Kayle,Nida, Maokai, Mord, you name it. I loved playing off the wall non-meta builds, weird rune combos, and simply being able to look at the roster and go "there are 50+ champs that are fun with 4-5 viable builds for each."

All these reworks, new items, mastery changes, ect how many of the players that played season 1 and 2 are even still around? How many of you can honestly say you wouldn't prefer a previous Season? Pick a season 1 through 5. League just no longer plays like league.

These days all fight resolve in under 3 seconds, at any given time maybe 30 champs are even played and each of those champs has at MOST 2 viable builds. If I had to pick when things really went south, I'd say between the addition of devourer and the tank ekko nerfs. Everything after that has been crap.

THe only "good" rework was the WW one, and even it has issues. The main issue being it's pretty much limited to playing it tanky/bruiser jungle.

I feel like the whole game has been balanced around a "pro scene" that I don't even watch. Honestly why can't the game just be targeted toward "fun for the majority of players" and let the pros sort out amongst themselves what's the most broken.

Because hybrid builds aren't "fun to play against" since people don't know how to build HP

But apparently high damage is fun to play against

Riot Game

Ive been playing since Xin release, i can say with confidence the game has only gotten better, and most of the reworks are leaps and bounds improvements over the boring shit they used to be.

Been here since S1. There is a problem that back then, we played the game, trying to find out what actually works, it wasnt (atleast for me) all about elo. I was a noob back in the days. Now you can see just all the clickbait titles on YT about what champs and builds are easy to abuse to rank up. The word ABUSE is really important here, cuz we didnt do that, but everybody started playing the main strats when we found out how strong it was. Since that we, as a community basically started doing a "speedrun" of League. We abuse everything just to see that sweet +15LP at the end, we dont need for the game to be diverse or fun. I think thats where a lot of the frustration comes in, because we abuse the strat, but when we loose in the end "when we were suppose to win" we get insanely tilted and angry that is didnt work.

Half of the people playing this game shouldnt play it at all, its just too addictive.

I've been playing since mid-season 3 (Lissandra's release), and looking back, I say I got until mid-season 4 before this game started taking turns for the worse.

With regard to reworks specifically, the majority is something I personally would like to see reverted. But then I am very conservative in my playstyle, and generally not a fan of big changes.

But a few specific examples: Fiora and Irelia. These 2 in particular are champions I used to enjoy. But with their rework, I find I don't really understand them anymore. Also, with them having both turned so mechanical, I find myself not having low enough ping to play them properly anymore. Not using that as an excuse to want them reverted, but I don't find them fun to play anymore, because I feel hardware limited on them. Less fun for me is the keyword.

While I can "play" probably half of the champions, there is only a handful I have "fun" with. Big difference.

Major changes: The "new" Summoner's Rift. I liked the graphics style of the old map - or should I say "old game", old client included - much better. It's what drew me to this in the first place, coming from DoTA. The original art style was just spot-on for a game such as this.

But the new art style turned so cartoonish, I didn't like it anymore. And so I turned to ARAM instead, only leaving the Howling Abyss to do the barest minimum of ranked games to get the free skin every season.

Same with the game client itself - yes, it may have been flawed and its coding being a hopeless mess and whatever, but it had character. Something the new client is utterly lacking - its coding is apparently still a mess, and it managed to lose all its charm in the process.

Runes and masteries: RIP old system. The old system offered variety to a much, much larger degree than the new one. And when I learned some runes are map-specific (Waterwalking) - or even forcibly changed if "wrong" (like Magical Footwear on Cassiopeia or Ultimate Hunter on Jayce) - I lost all interest in them.

I mean the reworks definitely changed my champion pool. But I also enjoyed some of the new champs that came out like Kindred and AurelionSol . On the other hand I used to main Katarina and Ryze and now I don't enjoy playing those champs at all due to the reworks.

It's a different game from when I started. In some ways it's better and in some ways it's worse. But the game is constantly evolving and will never be perfect. There was no "glory" period because the game always had huge flaws every single season and people bitched about it back then just as much as they do now.

I will say that the desire to balance around the pro scene has robbed the game of some its original flexibility. Consider a champion like Evelyn who has been relegated to only taking the JG role (whereas in the past, she could feasibly assign herself to a number of roles). It definitely feels lame that there are so few viable build options for each given champion : /.

Been around off and on since s1, and I honestly like what theyve done with all the reworks. Im not crazy about every change theyve made, but I think theyve done a pretty remarkable job with this f2p game.

Akali is SO HOT6/14/2019, 5:20:34 PM4 votes

My 2 fav champs were Akali and Irelia, but then both of them were deleted from the game.

Snowbrand6/14/2019, 7:57:23 AM2 votes

Well, I got more mains after the reworks. I love akali now, morde is probably gonna be a new main since his new kit is so fun. I haven't played Swain for some time, but I do like his kit and would probably be a main if was good at him. Kayle also became a main too, so I feel like I've got a lot more mains after these reworks actually.

Power Cosmic6/14/2019, 3:00:28 PM1 votes

Just hearing about Panth's VGU makes me frustrated figuring how Evelynn, Swain, and Aatrox are gone. LoL 2 shouldve been made for this new direction, but LoL is a phenomenon that best practices still havent caught up to.

Saezio6/14/2019, 3:04:09 PM1 votes

I play since season 2 and watch since season 1 (buddies played, I was more of an MMORPG player back then) I enjoy the game more now but that's because I am an ARAM only player and Runes reforged is like it was meant to be an aram system. :)

That said, most of the things you claim to have enjoyed back then were either extremely niche and are unplayable simply because people are not as bad at the game as they were back then or used to be busted as fuck (like the tank spellvamp ryze)

The truth is there are far more champions viable in top elo right now than there used to be back then. And also nowadays riot has gone away from creating easy champions in favour of more complicated and high skillcap champs

Silent Reaper6/14/2019, 3:45:33 PM1 votes

I used to play a wide variety of champs.

The only rework I was truly upset about was removing Ap Master Yi and removing old Fiora ult (not to mention the horrible splash art)... It was depressing.

OhBilly6/14/2019, 5:17:08 PM1 votes

I really enjoyed and mained old Skarner, Malzahar and Talon, the latter still being decent post-rework in my opinion. Malzahar was completely gutted, and Skarner's fun building options and kit were turned into a generic tank-cc stereotype.

I on and off mained Aatrox since release and quit nearly right after the rework, for obvious reasons, and can't find myself enjoying his current playstyle.

While I also mained Urgot and Twitch, these two at least needed the rework, and their post work condition is relatively good (or better?)

The Spicy Crit6/14/2019, 5:27:31 PM1 votes

I main Tryndamere, Yasuo and Tahm Kench and those are the only 3 champs i play, so i don't have that problem, but i can understand why people's champion pools started being smaller and smaller. Nowadays champ reworks are basically "we delete the old champion and make a new one with the old one's name". It's crazy how much i actually miss this game even tho i'm still playing it. This is not the league i used to play 24/7.

ModCaptainMårvelous6/14/2019, 8:15:12 PM1 votes

Played since Season 1. Feel like I actually have too much to pick TBH. I've played pretty much every rework a fair degree. But 90% of the time I'm limited by role (Jungler) and honestly the paralyzing "Do I want to have fun with a subpar jungle pick (Yorick) or do I want just play a game with something more suitable?"

Porglit6/14/2019, 8:19:18 PM1 votes

I'm one of the Season 1 people you're talking about. I dearly miss most parts of the game. Remember Heart of Gold, or Philosopher's stone? I played the heck out of Eleisa's Miracle when it existed, too... When I first learned Rengar, I played Sword of the Occult, then they removed that as well. Even the newer items I like, like poacher's dirk, they end up removing...

I seem to absolutely love the exact things that League hates and removes. Even if they don't remove people, then end up nerfing them or abandoning them until they're worthless (I LOVED Ivern...).

Sigh.

ITZ ICY6/14/2019, 8:21:37 PM1 votes

Over the years my champion pool got more diverse, yea, maybe I play less champs than I used to, but then I ONLY played support, wasn't that hard to pick up a new champion (especially since I was at silver/gold elo, didn't really matter if I perform slightly worse with a different champion). Now I play top/mid/supp and sometimes adc, I'm 100% happy with that change, even if it was half-conscious.

Śhunpo6/14/2019, 9:28:17 PM1 votes

Katarina I still miss you.....Your current iteration is fun, but it's no old Kat....

ChaosReyn6/14/2019, 9:43:11 PM1 votes

I don't mind a lot of the reworks honestly. I hate Akali's, and I hate what this patch did to Ryze. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss most of the old-school, pre-reworked kits and builds (Pre-reworked AP Sion, for example). But I don't think the majority of the champion reworks were necessarily where they went wrong on delivering. I think it's more just in the meta-pushing.

Like you said, there was a time you could play just about anything, almost anywhere, and still have a fun game. I remember AD Janna mid being almost popular at one point. I remember bot lane Ziggs, or the "toxic" bot lane of Cass with Teemo or Singed. I remember when tank junglers could still clear with enough viability to matter, and I remember when damage junglers were still healthy enough to gank without going back after 2-3 camps and realizing the enemy already took scuttle. I remember mage junglers other than Fiddlesticks and Karthas used to exist, and that some of them were actually good!

It's all starting to feel like a forced binary. Nothing's really built to be played anymore, more than it's built to perform a single role. That goes for items, runes, champions, you name it...every aspect of this game has went from feeling like an open-ended 5v5 between legendary champions who can do anything, to feeling like a more complex rock-paper-scissors game based around champions built to beat X, fail to Y, and stay in line with Z.

KICK OUT AT 26/14/2019, 11:44:00 PM1 votes

Started playing season 3, used to like urgot, graves, shen, gangplank, darius, fiora, kat, AP nunu, ryze, vlad. After their reworks they all became less fun and the only ones I still rarely play are ryze, shen, and darius. I really want riot to go the blizzard route and give us a way to go back to season 2 or 3 so people who don't like s9 can still have fun playing the league they loved.

But as for off-meta picks/builds being bad I think that's the fault of all the 3rd party websites. People can instantly see the best champions, best runes, and best builds. If an off-meta pick/build is actually good, it will instantly become meta because everyone will see it on the websites and every youtuber will make a video about it. Before s5 you had to figure it all out by word of mouth or your own experimentation.

I would honestly ditch current league just to play Old Malzahar again tbh

we havent met6/15/2019, 7:45:27 AM1 votes

As someone who's been playing since season 4, i fucking hate this game and how its turned out. It's fucking exhausting to me that they keep coming up with new champs to literally outclass everyone. i.e zoe outclassing literally every burst mage/ akali outclassing assassins/duelists irelia outclassing duelists Like its just boring to me. it bores me that tencent doesnt give a fuck about anything that isnt making them money.

Hèntaî 6/14/2019, 5:03:10 AM1 votes

Man it isnt even the reworks I cant play more champs than 3 or 4 because of all the toxicity in just about every game I play.

Fraggleroc6/14/2019, 9:45:14 AM1 votes

Been doing my dailies on 3 servers since season 1... now I play only 2 champs too. Getting bored. Just cant find any champ better than those 2.

fabfan6/14/2019, 10:06:39 AM1 votes

I miss the old Garen before this juggernauts rework (probablly the day I hate the most in league history) since this patch his spin damage are garbage and he's not a lane bully anymore unless his opponent are braindead, I mean come even the new morde passive deal more damage than his spin...

Darkdemon6536/14/2019, 10:30:53 AM1 votes

I play only one champion. I probably would have ended up in this position regardless, but the changes to other champions certainly sped up the process.

OtterlyLost6/14/2019, 12:15:05 PM1 votes

This just makes me think of the variety of junglers I used to play but no longer do. I actually would have considered myself a jungle main for a brief period time in season 5 and 6 until they literally reworked all of the junglers I used to play and enjoy. Sejuani, Warwick, Nunu, Maokai, and on a smaller scale, Rammus and Diana. I used to have a much larger roster of champions I enjoyed to play, mostly tank junglers, but now they've all changed and i haven't really got the time or energy to dedicate myself to learning them again. I work more than I did in season 5, I live on my own now and have my own shit to deal with. My pool of champions has literally just shrunk to ADCs because they all have similar playstyles. I just dont have time to relearn the champs I played for the jungle or really, relearn the jungle. It has changed so much and is constantly changing so it's hard for me to invest in it. With ADC, it's ateast a by in large stable role, except for the last half of last season(which was stressful and upsetting since if my class of champions had stayed like that, I dont think I would have continued playing and, with the amount of stuff I have invested into this game, that would have been total shit).

I think that reworking champions is a good thing... but I admit there hasnt been a single champion to date they reworked that i look at and say I want to play. I'm still upset that they reworked and trashed Sejuani. I miss her old ult. Hell, I miss Maokai's old ult.

Tychusfindlay9186/14/2019, 1:12:01 PM1 votes

veigar, darius, chogath, maybe nasus at times.

UpDownLeftRightAB6/14/2019, 2:00:04 PM1 votes

I've been playing since beta, I used to know a good 2-3 champs for each roll. Those champs have all been reworked so I only have around 5 I can play at a decent skill level. I don't play the reworked champions I used to know because most of the reworks emphasized the parts of the kits I didn't use, emphasized the play styles I didn't like for those champs, or just made the champ unfun to play.

PickleLorde6/14/2019, 2:07:50 PM1 votes

I only played Nunu as an AP support until his rework. Now they're fun but completely unplayable as a support champion. I just hope the same thing doesn't happen with fiddlesticks when he gets reworked.
