Why do people STILL think Sona does high damage?

Like...I could have sworn that myth was busted the last time Sona was a topic on the forums.

She has high damage potential, but it is dependent on things being lined up perfectly and she doesn't have much damage sustain nor is her burst consistent.

  • item 3100 Spellblade passive being up
  • item 3285 Passive stacked
  • Thunderlord's Decree being off cooldown
  • 2 stacked power cords (Q being used last)
  • A bit of magic penetration

Throw in her ult for the hell of it.

She will definitely chunk somebody out with those combinations (or at least a few of the above), but she wont be chunking someone once things aren't lined up anymore.

Her damage isn't high. It's simply reliable and all at one time. You realize that if nearly anyone else built the same items Sona built, she'd ALWAYS be out-damaged, right? By significant margins, even. Some people can do nearly as much damage as her or more without even building damage items at all as long as they're landing their rotations.

Like, I can not stress this enough: Relative to nearly everyone else in the game, Sona's damage-dealing is basically negligible. Take Nami for example. If you REALLY wanted to go hard into an ap build for her, her W could actually INCREASE in damage/healing per bounce rather than decrease if you built enough ap (about 300 or 400 ap is when this starts I believe?). She also has more spells to damage people with and 50% - 60% ratios on all those moves, save E, which is at least an AA steroid for 3 hits. Nami's potential to straight up kill people, let alone chunk people, is significantly higher, assuming we're building a ton of damage items (even if it had to mirror a Sona build, thus including Lich), but Sona's damage output is done significantly faster and easier, hence why people think she does so much.

It's perception vs. reality.

I am agreeing with you. She has high damage potential not damage in general or relative to to others.

She doesn't do high damage all together, but you can't deny that she CAN still take out a good portion of somebodies health. She will be out-damaged, but you can't say she cannot do a decent amount of damage herself. Relative to other champions does not mean she cannot chunk someone out, even if others will do more.

That is exactly the point it is reliable all at one time you stated it yourself, and that is what I am saying. She cant just pump out high damage right off the bat, but she can do a large amount of damage at one time once circumstances are met.

She can't do high damage consistently and requires more set up time than anyone else. She has a lot of potential damage, not damage in general.

Nami, Sona and Leblanc have the same build, same runes, same masteries and all the AP they could ever ask for. Their target has 150 armor and 150 magic resist.

Nami takes out 85% of someones health in 3 seconds Sona took out 70% of someones health in 3 seconds Leblanc took out 100% of someones health in 3 seconds

Yes they all did more damage relatively, but you can't deny that Sona didn't take out a large portion of their health. Nami and Leblanc will be able to do it much sooner than Sona as well, but you can't say Sona didn't do well herself.

Comparing things will always make something look bad, but it doesn't mean it doesn't have it's ups.

A top tier sports athlete in college may be mediocre compared to professional athletes, but they are still great from a general standpoint. A child with a B+ and a child with an A+ doesn't mean the B+ child is incompetent.

As much as that's all fine and dandy, that just means that "Holy crap that support did a lot of damage to me" isn't exclusive to Sona. Hell, it's hardly exclusive at all, save picks like Soraka or Janna where you'd have to be suicidal to get hit by their full damage output.

The main point of the thread is that someone like Sona shouldn't be the poster child of "high damage" supports. She's basically one of the lowest damage champs in the game. Something like that better describes someone like Zyra.

DPS Haveing a consistant ammount of small damage but adds up healthily over time

Neither

She has ONE attack move save her ult. The only time you'll notice her damage at all is when she's stacking her passive + has a good deal of bonus on-hit damage tacked on (primarily Lich) + has a good deal of ap built in for that on-hit damage to scale up, and even then she doesn't have a rotation of skills like nearly any other champ in the game. This means that once you take that one Q, she can't do anything else until her Q's back, and to boot, that Q will do pitiful damage unless she burns more mana casting her other two skills to put her passive back on to try to chunk you again.

Even with all this said, nearly any other mage support in the game can do as much or more damage than Sona can, given they have the same build. The only thing giving the illusion of high damage is that you notice it all at one time the one time she chunks Q.

RedCyclone2 votes

that one attack has 4 damage sources coming from it, 3 are magic damage and scale with her AP, while she also has to autoattack too, what means lichbane is included normally

you are also forgetting that Sona has very low cooldowns and usually caps her CDR very soon, weaving her Q every 5 seconds and outputting some quite harsh damage

Quite harsh damage if you don't have a single mr item, maybe.

Like, with the sheer amount I've been using this champ, I'm not just being a hipster. Her damage output is low, just like how Fiora's not tanky. You can BUILD DAMAGE on Sona, just like you can BUILD DEFENSES on Fiora, but Fiora's no tank and Sona's no primary damage dealer, nor does she have the damage output of one. This isn't a difficult concept.

Because she does. The majority of the times I've played Sona I've ended up in the top ~3 highest damage dealt overall that game, from the support role.

Her damage is absurd.

When is the last time you used this champ ever? As far as your op.gg goes, it's been longer than a month at least, and not once in a ranked game.

People that don't play the champ shouldn't shape peoples' opinion on a champ.

She literally hasn't changed since thunderlord's was introduced. I learned shortly after the new queue was introduced that I couldn't play support as my secondary role anymore since I'd never get to play my mains.

I just tested this in a custom game. 281 damage after armor and MR from a Q + AA + AA combo at level three. For reference, a level three leblanc combo using leblanc's standard skill order did 275 damage to the same target.

Whether or not that qualifies as "high damage" is up for discussion, but if sona doesn't do high damage earlygame than neither does LeBlanc.

In teamfights, her damage is pretty much negligible, hence the usual Pika propaganda with citing just raw damage stat over the whole game.

But in lane, she has a very constant, reliable and affordable poke pattern that can really hurt almost any opposing bot lane. You should be able to poke even hard-engage supports to the point where they can't hard-engage anymore because they would lose the fight.

That comes from people not knowing how to fight a support that only shows up in about 3-4/100 games. Blitz/Naut/Leona/Alistar should NEVER lose to a Sona EVER. All they literally have to do is hit level 2 before she does and straight up disrespect the shit out of her and her adc for the rest of the lane. If she comes up, trade and don't let her poke for free. Literally watch for when she's moving in and close in while she does. She's a low damage, low range, low survivability support with no hard cc pre-6. Not many meta supports should really lose to Sona when you think on it. If you understand how to fight her, the lane is quite literally a cakewalk, and Sona can't do shit about it.

That said, her Q is affordable and reliable, but the post's original context was about her damage, which is lack-luster in comparison in comparison to any other mage or support/mage you could compare it to due to how reliable it is.

DeathBurst1 votes

If you want to be nit-picky about that, the post's original context was about people's perception of her damage, and reliable and affordable damage looks much higher than a big fat skillshot that you hit once every bloodmon, so people think that Sona damage is high.

That being said, of course hard engage supports are her natural counters, my point was badly phrased, I meant that even against her counters, she can still hold her ground if played correctly. But yeah, at similar skill-level she shouldn't be able to win against the champs you mentioned.

That's...relatively fair enough. Still, the second point of the post is to, once again, remind people that no...it isn't high. It's mediocre at best. If skill shots landed once a blood moon, no one would like skill shots. If you gain mastery with champs, you'll land your skill shots more when they count. That's always going to be worth more than gradual damage coming from a squishy, low mobility, close-ranged support mage.

I responded to the rest of it, but I deleted it since I'd like to keep things relatively on topic.

I disagree with this assessment. A mechanically-easy-to-play, straightforward and reliable laning phase is a big asset that allows you to focus on strategic aspects of the game more. Is the map warded properly? Is the time right for doing Dragon? Should we push towers or freeze-n-farm?

But if you want to stay on-topic, specifically on the amount of damage Sona deals, I also disagree that it is "mediocre at best" during the laning phase. Even if her potential damage is lower, her actual damage in practice (due to the high reliability) mixed with her high sustain allow her to win attrition war with similar supports like Nami/Janna/Karma/Lulu/Soraka.

I completely agree that her damage in the later phases of the game is negligible, and I don't even build Lichbane on her unless we are already snowballing heavily. You just don't play Sona if you want damage in late game: Zyra/Karma/Morgana/Annie are all better suited for that. But I repeat that during laning phase, her mix of damage + sustain is more than respectable. And it's really the mix of both that is important. Sure, you have less sustain than Soraka, but you have much more damage, and conversely with Karma. And you should win both of this match-up. Ultimately, this is what is important: do you win or lose, not did you deal the most damage.

A good support player can do this regardless. Mastering a champ allows for one to be able to juggle these types of things. Unlike other supports, however, Sona can't advance her play far beyond the starting point due to how simple she is. Far more frustrating than people give credit for.

  • High reliability + over-time chipping =/= huge burst damage, which is what people falsely think she does on her own. You can BUILD it with a Sheen, but you can put NLR on Morgana and do the same thing. It's just like how Fiora isn't tanky, but you can make her last significantly longer with a heavy fighter build. Doesn't mean she's a tank, and she'll fold like paper if you use her as one. Sona's no damage dealer, and you'll be sorely disappointed if that's how you approach the champ.

  • Really, Sona doesn't do well against Nami, Janna, or Soraka. Sona basically fails at fighting any support you could deem as "good", assuming the opponent playing them is good themselves.

If you win or lose is always more important. The main thing is that I'm tired of this misconception that Sona's main strength is "high damage". Poke? Yea, because it's so cheap to use. But it's not necessarily good for chunking up red bars more than it is for getting a hit when you want it.

Side note: You really shouldn't win against a Soraka. Karma, yea, but Karma's a lack-luster support in most instances.

If you can deal 700 damage in 2 seconds, you can kill a 700 hp target. If you can deal 1500 damage in 8 seconds, it doesn't mean squat if the target takes 375 damage in 2 seconds and gets away to heal back up.

That answers the question. It's also why assassins tend to have low total damage numbers and high kills.

  1. No spell rotation takes 8 seconds.

  2. Quick, low damage =/= High damage. That's just small burst. Still doesn't compare to the damage potential of almost any other champ in the game. Like, NONE of these replies look at Sona's damage output comparitively to basically any other ap champ.

Vekkna2 votes
  1. Totally irrelevant. ADCs mostly do sustained AA damage. The time it takes to execute a spell rotation isn't even part of the topic.

  2. Ok, so basically you're splitting hairs to make a literal point that Sona's overall damage potential is low. You can keep trying to make that point I guess, but getting kills, assists, and wins is what actually matters. Sona's actually quite good at things like winning games, which is the point of playing games. Whether she does it with high or low damage is, once again, beside the point.

As supports go, she has a unique combination of cheap, un-missable, ranged, frequent, strong poke with very high burst windows. Along with a functional amount of utility.

You're asking for Sona to be Annie. Which is strange considering Sona wins so many more games as support than Annie does.

If you really want DPS on your Sona, get a Nashor's so you can do damage during Q's 5 sec CD.

Even with that said, Sona can't weave efficiently consistently outside of 1, maybe 2 attempts because her spells have uneven cds.

  1. Ok, so basically you're splitting hairs to make a literal point that Sona's overall damage potential is low.

I'm not splitting hairs. Her overall damage output IS low. You can build a ton of AP on Nami and Janna too, but I wouldn't say their damage is high either. NONE of them are, but people have this misconception that Sona's is because basically all her damage dealing potential is shoved into one spell...and only when her passive is up...for one hit.

You can keep trying to make that point I guess, but getting kills, assists, and wins is what actually matters.

That isn't even the point of the thread...

Sona's actually quite good at things like winning games, which is the point of playing games.

I don't know what game you're playing but I'm surprised it's not League of Legends given how we should be talking about the same character.

Not the point of the thread.

I'm not asking for Sona to be Annie. I'm asking why do people think Sona hits like Annie when she clearly doesn't. If you asked me what I really want, I'd want a rework of the champ. One that allows for Sona to be an actual viable pick from time to time and not stuck in this low-elo stomper state like she is now. One that gives her actual supporting tools that are relevant with the times. Not just "more damage".

But since that may never happen, realistically I want for people to realize how dumb they look when they insinuate that someone that built a Luden's and a Lich shouldn't do a large amount of damage to their adc, almost regardless of who.

I wonder if full AP Alistar would be viable as a support.

His combo does more dmg than Sona's (and scales better) Is just as reliable He's actually relatively tanky even without tank items (especially with his ult) Provides on demand CC His heal is better for himself and only slightly worse for his ADC
