What was the point of malzahar rework?

Instead of 100-0ing you with no counterplay burst damage,

now he 100-0s you with no counterplay sustained damage.

while having a spellshield.

which also nullifies 90 percent of any damage, physical or magic.

How does he have no counterplay? If that was true he would be banned or picked in competitive LoL which he isn't. He's never picked and never banned lol because anyone with half a brain knows how to shut him down, i mean an auto attack takes his shield off for 40 seconds for christs sake. He is definitely a noob punisher which makes up most of the LoL playerbase so the crying makes sense, but he's pretty mediocre right now.

I crushed a malzahar in ranked earlier today as veigar.

I could just auto him to take his shield off, and cage him or his voidlings, then burst him to nothingness.

I'm not the biggest fan of his rework, but... Devils Advocate: He didn't live up to the expectation of a void summoner or whatever he is supposed to be and they wanted to make him more distinct. His kit was clunky and was pretty impossible to optimise i.e., it was very very difficult to silence > aids > pool > ult somebody(or however the combo went). When he did ult in team fights, it was usually pointless because he wouldn't get much of it off. He'd generally be CC'd or die.
