@Riot - A suggestion for introducing Runes to new players and giving eveyone room to experiment
Short Version:
- Give all players 2 free "Default" Rune pages for general use, one for AD and one for AP.
- As new players level up and unlock Rune slots, give them the Runes that go into said Default rune slots, so they can piece together a decent Rune page from the get-go and have a point to start exploring different options.
Browsing champion.gg, I've noticed that the most common Rune page taken for most AP champions happens to be exactly the same for almost anyone you look at (which just goes to show you how ridiculous the cost of Runes is for how unimportant people think creating specialized pages is, even in Plat+ ranked). This is also true for every AD champions (although ADCs take different Quints than other AD champions).
So my suggestion: Give every player two free Rune pages that contain these common core Runes in addition to their 2 customizable Rune pages. Not only will this save future players IP on buying a basic set of Runes for the champions they play, but gives experienced players the runes they want for most champions with breathing room to create specialized pages for their favorites.
If you're curious about what these two universal Rune pages are:
(Universal AP Page) 9 Marks of Magic Penetration 9 Glyphs of Magic Resist 9 Seals of Armor 3 Quints of Ability Power
(Universal AD Page) 9 Marks of Attack Damage 9 Glyphs of Magic Resist 9 Seals of Armor 3 Quints of Attack Damage (Attack Speed for ADCs)
Whether the Default AD page should contain Quints of AD or AS is up for debate.
So basically, gradually giving new players the Runes they need to build strong core Rune pages for free would be a great way to encourage more creativity in the Runes that players take into the Rift. It would be really nice (as someone who already is level 30 and has a decent understanding of the game) to be able to test out specialized Rune pages for champions I play without sacrificing IP to the gods of greed or giving up good standard Rune pages that are applicable to lots of champions.
Conclusion:
If we can't have free Runes and unlimited Rune pages, then this is the next best thing, and even if free Runes and pages become a thing, it would still be a good idea to give new players default Rune pages so they have an idea of where to start. I hope this finds its way to someone at Riot so you can maybe consider implementing this once the new Client is done! ^.^
