With recent meta shifts and tanks once again dominating top Mordekaiser finds more success in mid

I haven't been playing a lot of Mordekaiser in my ranked games lately due to me encountering the same issue over and over again. I get fed early and the enemy laner outscales me in terms of team utility.

With beefy tanks like Nautilus, Malphite and Poppy rolling top picking Mordekaiser to go up against them is something I would not recommend. CC wins games, as a Mordekaiser main I speak from experience when I say that having decent engage/CC and a durable top laner as the backbone of your team makes winning so much easier.

Mordekaiser is a champion that thrives in aggressive 1v1 lanes against the likes of Yasuo, Riven, Fiora, Irelia and other FIGHTERS. He struggles against tanks due to him not only being susceptible to CC but not providing any for his team himself. He does provide a LOT of combat durability though due to Iron Man but playing him Top Lane takes up a spot for a heavy CC tank.

So, if you ever feel the itch to play Mordekaiser refrain from using him top UNLESS you have someone like Sejuani in the Jungle and/or a leona as a support.

What I do think has become a lot more strategically wise is taking the Iron Revenant mid due to him enjoying shorter lanes, being easier to escape ganks but also being close to jungle camps he can effectively farm and heal up on with his Harvester of Sorrow. Taking a Juggernaut mid does give your team a very strong frontline if you pair Mordekaiser with someone like Nautilus top, someone to engage and who Mordekaiser can fight besides, bringing the cc he so desperately needs while also allowing him to truly shine in team fights.

Mordekaiser mid is also a great counter to short/medium ranged mages and assassins, being able to push the waves relentlessly and efficiently while negating a lot of poke and even farming the jungle. Mordekaiser mid also provides something a lot of Mid laners lack; Durability! Other perks include being very close to Dragon and being able to roam top/bot and assist your team.

-> Mordekaiser can function as the center of his team and bring a strong team fighting presence to the table as well as great dragon/baron/herald control with his Children of the grave ->His damage is nothing to laugh at and his wave clear's very strong, being able to keep up with most mid laners while also being a lot more durable and bolstering your team's front line even more. What's more horrifying than having to face a team with Mordekaiser Nautilus Leona Gragas and Kalista You'll be steamrolled by four tanks while being unable to kill any of them.

There are some negatives to Morde mid though; -Lack of range; Luxes might make your life miserable -Lack of mobility might make you an easy target for the enemy jungler

As things currently stand Mordekaiser might just snatch up his tent in mid for the time being. If the meta shifts towards Fighter/assassins/mages top and tanks becoming less common Morde might once again shift his attention towards top lane where he can shut down the enemy fighters while outscaling them in terms of damage and durability.

This doesn't mean that Mordekaiser top's dead, he does really well against certain enemy team comps and having a heavy cc jungler/support warrants a Mordekaiser pick if the enemy consists mostly of lighter fighters and champions reliant to dive into the enemy lines.

Just a little heads up for all of you wanting to give Mordekaiser a chance. Knowing WHEN to pick Mordekaiser is on what your success with the Metal Emperor hinges on!

You should become a weather newscaster on everything Mordekaiser related.

"In other news, Gunblade receiving a 50 damage buff on the PBE makes Mordekaiser's win rate rise by 0.002%"

So much this. An item was touched that Morde sometimes buys. Let's write an essay. I did (good or bad) with Morde today. Essay I went to the movies and HUEgh Jackman was in it. Essay I went to Home Depot and one South American guy called another Ese. Essay because they might be Brazilian and said ese/essay

I've beven doing this since the patch where W could target minions again. I also don't notice the problems against the top lane champions you mentioned. It could be a difference of skill match ups. Sometimes I do amazing against nautilus, sometimes, eh, not so much.

The only mid lane champions who give me issues are Lux, (duh) Ori, Azir, (ugh) and Vel'koz.

I try to avoid ranked, too much toxicity for my tastes. That could also be the difference.

I would love to collaborate with you sometime, I've looked over your masteries, runes, and frequent builds; and they raise some questions.

I never said he struggles against these champions in lane, hell I actually think these types of lanes are the most relaxing. What I meant is that these tanks outscale Morde in terms of utility by bringing a lot of CC to their team and we all know CC wins games.

Tanks can be in jungle/sup. So it's alright. Using this reasonning, Mordekaiser won't bring more Utility than other mages ( lux can cage/burst someone who fails at placement, get instaburst and have 20 hp left before the beginning of the teamfight, malzhar/brand melts tanks and neutralize etc..). Having a frontlane from jungle & sup is nice. You add morde who is a tanky threat then one apc and one adc for more damages. Ofc,you're further from the drake, but still. Stomping on a tank won't allow him to buy tankiness items. You should use your gold advantage to counter that utility of them (ie surviving during a control =>item 3053 ). Have fun

I troll pick'd Mord Mid yesterday and got destroyed by a Lux (Then again it was a horrendous stomp and I did better than my teammates).

What do you level first? what was your build?

I can not wait for the mage update and whatever Riot is planning to update next ( Meddler commented that they are looking at either diving fighters,** initiating tanks**, or assassins). The mage update is more in hopes they add some variety to the High AP items (I feel like I end up building item 1058 4 times in when using a mage), but the update after that I hope helps make light fighters favorable over tanks and juggernauts with cc.

I feel that the light fighter is less effective atm since they are about as squishy as an ADC with none of the range, hens people picking/ building like juggernauts or picking tanks. I think it comes down to "why have a heavy damage dealer that gets blown up when we have ranged champs who can do the same thing from a safe distance".

I don't think he wants to use his name IRL for league.

I just hope you're not saying that you struggle against tank in 1v1. They can barely go through your shield and you outsustain them to death. Otherwise you're doing something wrong.

Best thing to do is to have a tank with cc (jungle is better for level advantage).2 frontlane + morde+ apc + adc would be the best combination for him. Still, you can have a frontlane and lux/Morgana support who must not be underestimated since they provide a different utility that helps morde a lot.

I'll try him out mid. You are totally right about him going top, and honestly, he works more efficiently mid lane thanks to his ability to melt objectives and use his ghosts to carry his team. I always try to help my team from TOP lane, and being so secluded away from everyone means that you are going to waste time because you are so slow. Any tips for mid Morde? Builds?
