@Riot- Melee Carries: What are you going to do with them?
It's no secret that Riot's struggled with making melee carries work. in the last two years we've moved toward some characters working but not in the typical fashion. Characters like Fiora, Gangplank or Yasuo who provoke just as much ire from the playerbase as any other painful character. That said, Riot's handling of melee characters boils down to some major flaws in their design:
- 1.) Overload the character. Give them a ton of things to force them into a position where getting fed=domination.
- 2.) Don't give them a carry playstyle. Most melee carries in league boil down to either duelists or assassins. Sometimes tanky snowballers.
- 3.) Mordekaiser: Mordekaiser was Riot's poor attempt to crack open the bot-lane meta and force in an alternative melee carry. We saw how that worked.
There are many problems with melee carries: Some ranged are just as mobile, making it an arms race and thus melee will always lose the battle in an equal mobility match-up. Ranged champs can take towers, deal damage and take objectives like baron far safer than a melee character can. Melee champs often have to sacrifice damage for the sake of defense, whereas most ADC builds have 90% damage and maybe 1 defensive item.
Are there situations where you can pull off bot-lane shenanigans? Absolutely! I've been smashed by a Yas/Janna bot before, I've seen kill lanes of Leona/Panth or J4/Leona dating all the way back to Season 1 and there was a time during early S4 where we had double targon fun times. But these strategies have never been encouraged. For all the expansion in multi-role champions, allowing unique things to thrive like Graves jungle or Varus mid, and all the variation Riot has made, Bot Lane seems stuck in the past. It's the only lane that refuses to change save for shoving a morde-shaped spike of pure iron into the lane.
My only possible fix, imo, could be tweaking items to make melee carries either more viable or more valuable. I remember a long time ago Riot talked about making Ohmwrecker into a laser for melee characters, maybe look into that more. Maybe do something to grant these melee champs more capability and remove the vicelike grip ranged carries have had on the game since Season 1. Still, I want this to be more of an open discussion than a "SIX AMAZING WAYS TO FIX MELEE CARRIES (NUMBER 4 WILL MAKE YOU HARD!)". If Riot could chime in, that'd be cool too.
Above all, I just want some insight with how Riot wants to handle melee carries or how they wish to make them work.
frustrate people, whether they're good or bad. (Regardless of counterplay)
are either build psuedo-tanky or assassin-like. They don't carry, they blow people up and then blow up themselves. (Or they do decent-enough damage but are super tanky)
who are just messes.
