Now that it's been a while, why did we need to kill AD Evelynn again?
I'm not going to pretend I'm unbiased here, since I have my problems with the Evelynn rework as a former player of hers. As someone who plays a ton of ARAM, it annoys me that her stealth radius is the width of a lane now so you can't get by anyone. I'll forever be annoyed that a rioter said they were going to keep one of her most iconic lines and then they threw it out. Not to mention the fact that they decided to make half her lines sex jokes for 12 year olds. But this isn't about those.
Back when she was released, Riot decided to get rid of Eve's hybrid scalings. The stated decision for this was because it was too difficult to balance the different styles of a hybrid champion. So it sounded like they wanted to do away with hybrids in favor of specialization. After all, they decided to take Eve from a champ who could build almost anything and force her to be an AP assassin only.
It's been over a year since her rework came out. Since then, there have been 9 reworks or new champion releases. Of those 9, 4 have hybrid scalings (not counting Nunu, who technically has an AD scaling on his cleave). Kai'sa, obviously, has hybrid scalings. Irelia kept her hybrid scalings. Akali kept her hybrid scalings. Ezreal kept his hybrid scalings. Why did Eve need hers removed?
I don't play Evelynn any more, I barely play Summoner's Rift any more, but I used to love building hybrid and adapting as the game went on. Why was Evelynn pigeonholed into one build path when nobody else was? If hybrid scalings are so hard to balance, why is everyone else allowed to keep their hybrid scalings?
I know I'll never be happy with the rework. I know old Evelynn is gone and never coming back. Maybe she is less of a nightmare to balance now. But every time I try to play her again it makes me sad, and dang it, I want to know why everything I loved about the champion had to be taken away.
