I was googling "how difficult is champ name to play" just to see what turns u pfor each champ, and I noticed that in a list of top 10 hardest champs to play, they had Riven listed as number 3, saying how she's only effective if you know how to animation cancel, I strongly disagree with this being the only way she can actually be good, as I've played her, my friends have played her, even my brother who's a diamond 3 thinks she's easy to play, so how does "animation cancelling" automatically mean she takes skill?

her skillfloor isn't that high, but it's very hard to play her to use her maximum potential.

Try to play her on a high level and find out.

I have met many many Rivens in Dia who couldn't believe how quickly they get smashed by my Nasus.

It's because in higher ELO she has so many counter's that if you don't know your mechanic's better than them, you'll flat out lose. Her animation canceling is basically core to her kit, without it she couldn't win most match ups, one animation cancel, called Double Casting is extremely useful in all the ranged match ups that she loses. Riven's Fast combo is useful in dueling, she'd lose to most other duelists without it and then all of her smaller ones are simply used to make her life easier. R+E for example shortens the animation of her R so she can still fight.

she is hard because

animation cancels are not easy, and to play her to her maximum potential they are needed. this alone means she has a higher skill floor and ceiling then most other champions
riven has very few favorable match ups, and a ton of skill based match ups, and numerous losing match ups. all of which she can win ( for the most part by herself ) is played correctly. but generally riven doesn't win lane unless she plays it better then the other laner. if she doesn't play better then the other laner the best she can hope for is an even lane.
melee carries have the job of an ADC but none of the safety that they do. effectively ( against ) raising the difficulty on her to perform her job well

You may be able to land all of her skills, but are you weaving in AA's between all of them, and doing the whole combo in <short amount of time here>?

Riven is one of those champs who you think you can be comboing just fine with and don't see the big deal, until you compare your performance to a riven god who is doing twice the damage in half the time and it's not clear why (because the majority of the animations are cancelled so you don't even see them).

Because trading as her in lane SUCKS.

Its super gimmicky due to all the animation combos and emphasis combos. Also, you take TONS of minion damage if you make the slightest miscalculation (other laners typically don't have to worry about FREAKING MINONS being a threat). Also, if you die even once, there's no come back.

Just like how Riven mains need to actually face SOME KIND of drawback, just "Starve or feast" is not a good enough drawback, she should at least use energy if not mana
