Let's Talk About Mordekaiser

With all the anger surrounding Mordekaiser, I thought it might be nice to have a discussion about Mordekaiser; less about his new title (The Lord of Death, for those wondering), but rather more about his gameplay and his 100% banrate at Worlds.

What is bad about the new Mordekaiser rework?

What was good about old Mordekaiser?

What should Mordekaiser's identity be? (tanky AP bruiser? short-ranged AP burst mage? full tank? duo lane juggernaut?)

What should be done to rectify these errors? (please, don't just call for a complete revert and no other changes, or simply for another designer that isn't CertainlyT)

For all the vitriol surrounding the Mordekaiser rework, we as a community really haven't proposed superior solutions or even fleshed out his identity somewhat. It's clear that he isn't healthy in his current state and promotes incredibly toxic gameplay patterns. Riot forcibly made him viable in a duo lane by giving him a crutch (ridiculous exp gain) and made him have ridiculous priority on Dragon, which isn't even a part of his thematic.

So I ask you, Gameplay and Balance: What do we need to do?

things i like about the rework;

-dual scaling opened up some build paths for him. -shield scales with his stats, gives him more balance levers to tune around -riot's at least looking at him and thinking outside of the box for how to make him feel unique

didn't like; -Dual scaling wasn't taken far enough; should be spread to his W to give him more things to play around.

  • gutted base stats (removed his armor/MR steroid and then gutted his base armor, very poor base HP for someone they want to encourage to build tanky, 325 MS)
  • reliance on allies makes his W feel bad
  • rework was too small-scope to ever come out satisfactory; needs a larger scale one to be adjusted to more acceptable levels, both for Mordekaiser players (as made very obvious by us) and the sake of the game (as made clear by his performance in competitive play)
  • they went about uniqueness the wrong way; his abilities feel constricted to be forced around using teammates instead of giving him different uses for selfish and team play.

edit: also title change/affinity for metal not being expanded on angers me greatly

edit2:

you haven't been reading the right threads then, a lot of people have been offering suggestions, ideas as to what he should be.

Mordekaiser is absolutely fine balance-wise, but the thing that players are so upset about is that they took a solo-lane burst mage and changed him into a duo lane juggernaut tank, but not only that, they outright deleted solo lane morde in the process until they reintroduced the ability for mordekaiser to target himself with his W. When you change a champion's kit and identity so heavily then there is bound to be backlash from Mordekaiser mains who have grown so accustomed to his old playstyle. Also they changed his title from "The Master of Metal" to "The Lord of Death" which I can see why people would be so upset about, at least the Master of Metal was unique but The Lord of Death is just so lame and generic, I hope Riot does revert this.

I'm being a bit biased towards new Morde here because I feel like his kit has a lot more counterplay now and is just completely healthier in every way, I don't want any changes to his kit as it is now, I just want a revert to his champion title.

Bad about new- just a Q bot. Try to one shot people is your whole plan.

Most skills don't feel real rewarding

No counterplay bs free exp passive, only reason he has a chance bot.

Dragon ghost is an exsessive gimmick.

Doesn't feel fun to play.

Good about old---theme and attitude were cool.

Way fun to play.

All skills more or less felt important.

Solo lane top or mid (like he belonged)

Did I mention fun to play?
