I vote swain for best late game mage

You can tank a veigar ult (in a reasonable time frame game) so that's a plus. Swain is so tanky in addition to hourglass ult 2.5 sec time to heal. Karthus WILL (even if intended) die and be out of the fight. Ryze was nerfed and is not seen. Cass is pretty good but if focused she WILL die. Same goes with veigar but even faster. Right now swain except galio is a tanky mid laner that can counter this assassin meta mid. No one uses him though :l or maybe they do and you can disregard this whole message.

I'm trying to say late game his tankiness and utility is pretty high. You think the enemy is gonna let you free hit? No they're gonna out one of your people out too.

Swain is one of the best MID game mage

His sustain and survivability is high enough in the mid game that he can't effectively be killed, and deals very high damage

In the end game, everyone's damage is so insanely high that he definitely not as dangerous anymore. Also tanks have become so tanky that Swain's average high damage is no longer enough.

Remember he has to sacrifice damage for tankiness.

I would say the best late game mage is probably ... I want to say Ziggs Ziggs has a LOT of aoe and team fight control, and his ultimate is massive enough to cover the entire team fight for absolutely massive damage

Kassadin also gets special mention, and is probably better in most comps

Swain is definitely not the best late game mage. His damage is mediocre, his sustain is easily countered by one of the most commonly built AP items in the game right now ( item 3165 ), and he is not mobile enough to pose a serious threat to most squishy targets.

Azir is probably the strongest late-game mage, due to the fact that he basically plays like an AP version of a marksman.
