JG Dilemma (lots of details)

Wukong lacks sustain so the early clear is rough and it's risky to gank at half HP or lower. Thus, I've tried to optimize a quick level 6 with efficient farming (usually getting 6 by ~7 minutes). Trying to gank instead at any point would mean I lose 2-3 camps worth of XP and gold for the time invested - which is basically the equivalent of a kill. As Wukong, I don't have any CC until 6 and my damage on just Stalker's Blade is not exactly amazing either since so much of Wukong's burst is due to his excellent AD ratios.

Basically, I'm playing Wukong almost like a Yi early and trying to make up for it at 6 through having more gold/xp than the enemy jungler as well as better items. However, in many games, it's apparently too hard to stay alive for 5 minutes of play and the score is sometimes 0-5 before I've even made the first gank. Usually, the enemy jungler will have made 1-2 ganks by that point so I'm kind of torn between trying to optimize the route for my own power and helping lanes with ganks. If I want to gank early, I would have to farm much less to be at a good HP level (or take more defensive runes/items like Armor Quints or 3 potions instead of Refillable). For example, I might have to go something like Krugs->Red->Blue->Gank which leaves a lot of camps still up and also not under the respawn timer while I gank. Worst of all, if the gank fails (and I don't have high CC or anything), I'll be behind. Wukong's clear time is okay but not great so a failed gank can really set you back. Something even like Yi despite having garbage ganks early, at least can farm his jungle quicker to make up for it.

So what do you do? I've thus far been favoring farming up because I feel that optimizing for the scenario when lanes feed hard might be trying to win a war that is already lost. Let's say 25% of the games my laners feed horribly while I farm fast but the rest is just a minor disadvantage so the farm style actually becomes stronger than attempting mediocre ganks. Those 25% of games, maybe I'll lose 70% and if I can gank early, I'll only lose 50%. However, for the rest, perhaps I can increase my winrate by 15% doing the farm style so even if I lose harder in the other games, it's still worth it. I hope that makes sense. I'm not sure how to handle this, especialyl when playing Wukong because the routes with the most farm and xp hurt my HP and mana bar too much to just on the fly decide "no, I'm going to switch from farming to ganking".

Do you use talisman instead of machete, do you kill a scuttle, do you smash little monsters first? If no all of those should make you healthier, also 3 pots but you mentioned that.

I use Talisman and kill the little monsters first if I'm trying to preserve HP (otherwise I just let my E AoE kill them). I don't take Scuttler early though because it's quite out of the way and involves a lot of walking to go back to the camps. If I took Scuttler I'd probably have to recall earlier Also, unless I have the Krugs buff, it takes a long time to kill it. The problem I have with 3 pots is that they lack the gold efficiency of refillable and I'd often want to get Hunter's Potion anyway mostly to reduce mana issues.

Try gromp (smite), blue, red (smite) then gank. Alternatively, only take 5 camps on your first clear, leaving red up. Buy a long sword and maybe the other basic jungle item (maybe boots). Take red on your way back out and gank immediately.
