Why do people pick Flavor of the Month in normals?

I understand wanting freelo in ranked. But in normals why would you pick the 'meta slave' picks instead of your favorite champions? Why pick an easy win pick over something fun?

"Man, so tired of playing Ahri, I think I'll go learn some Riven."

OMG META SLAVE NUB PICK A FUN CHAMPION LIKE MORDEKAISER!

"Not doing well on Lux, I think I'll play some Ashe"

OMG YOU'RE COPYING SNEAKY THE PRO YOU CAN'T ADC LIKE HIM, URGEH GET OUT SKRUB

Literally cannot even play a champion sometimes because they're either outright banned, picked or I get harassed for not doing well on them. I have a higher experience gate compared to most people (meaning it takes me a bit longer sometimes to learn because bad at games), sorry I'm not Adrian Riven in the first 2 games I play her.

I do have to agree, these boards do seem to have a heavy fetish for Mordekaiser, Urgot, Garen, Galio and Fid. If you play something not them you are some scumbag who cannot talk positively of your champion.

A) Practicing for ranked (duh). B) Maybe their favorite champs just happen to be FOTM. C) Maybe they don't play ranked so they take their norms seriously. D) Norms are still a mode of competitive play and your enemies are not obligated to take it as lightly as you and play Janna ADC.

Nobody said anything about Janna ADC. If I like Sivir, and Vayne is FotM, I am going to play Sivir.

Nobody said that anybody said anything about Janna ADC, was simply giving an example.

And what happens if sivir becomes FotM?

Are you just going to stop playing a champion you like or main just because it's FotM now?

Of course you don't.

Personally I'll avoid the champ altogether for a while because I don't want to fight over it and people will troll if they don't get it. The few times I do get it tends to be the hardest because people pick complete counters against me (Fizz and Syndra into Lux, Thresh, Varus and Blitzcrank into Ashe).

In fact, I had to put Lux down for a small bit when her Ultimate skin came out because she became FotM and I ended up just playing Ahri into them and tore into them. I have the worst timings when I decide to go back to my old mains, lol.

Fuck everyone that plays lee sin and rengar in normals.

Lee Sin isnt fotm tho. Hes flavor of the 4 seasons

thats the place to play a champion you dont know how to play. if you go right into ranked then people will be upset with you for not being master tier on the op champion. you should know how to play a champion before you bring it into ranked

LordGeovanni2 votes

because most people's favorite champion is the champion that wins with little effort

well.. lets see FOTM champ i dont normally play... let me go to normals for a handful of games spam them get a hang of them then go to rank

would be my guess

Arya Riven1 votes

Maybe. They should just first time them in ranked ^_^

oSEXYPLATYPUSo1 votes

then you or someone else is gonna make post ( and there has been lots of them ) crying over someone 1st timing a champ in rank

no matter what the community bitches and cries...

its one big circle jerk of tears

There will always be people playing to win in normals, because they can't be bothered to play lots of rankeds.

well in a game of win/loss you always try to win... maybe you arent super serious about it wanna have fun and enjoy the game but you play to win

well in a game of win/loss you always try to win... maybe you arent super serious about it wanna have fun and enjoy the game but you play to win

that's not true, when I play LoL I play for fun, as long as I had fun playing my champion I frankly don't care whether I win or lose the match

oSEXYPLATYPUSo1 votes

no , i dont care if i lose but i play to win.... im not gonna win every game

along my way to over 3k in wins do you know how many games i lost ? lol

but you always play to win... just dont get panties in a twist if you dont, dotn rage flame etc ... play the game , try. win or loss . say gg and move along

Arya Riven1 votes

You can win on any champion. Including those you love :)

oSEXYPLATYPUSo2 votes

and how do you learn or come across the champ you learn?

by playing lots of champs ?

venomous frost1 votes

You can, but who are we to judge people trying to win with fotm champs? Every person has their own views. For you picking fotm in normals is boring and stupid, everyone else has different thoughts.

I'm that guy that just mains an unpopular pick and sticks with it.

They might be practicing before taking it to ranked.

They may find those champions fun.

I can't speak for SR, but on maps like Howling Abyss certain champions/comps just completely smash others, and picking anything other than the metapicks generally results in a hard loss. That doesn't stop me from picking what I like, but I can understand why others might not do the same.

Because some people need to compensate for their "smaller stature". Meanwhile the rest of us just use whatever is fun.

Sometimes playing the flavour of the month champs is a good way to get insight to how to play against them, so if you don't normally play them (in ranked or otherwise), then you might want to try them in normals to get a sense for how to deal with them when you inevitably face them in ranked.

Also, someone being FotM doesn't make them not fun.

Greymoore1 votes

Possible reasons:

  1. Some people only have fun when they win
  2. Maybe they are practicing to go into ranked
  3. Maybe their favorite champion happens to be OP at the moment

Practice and it's still a competitive game that people want to win
