Riot, can we stop the "blame game"?

ItsCalledALance··4 votes·1,004 views

EDIT: Fk im sorry guys, I got corrected in the comments. Turns out that there was some dudes, that did some science shit and decided that you dont control anything. Nope, youre emotions are completely in the hands of your 12 year old junlger insulting your mom. Yup. its all luck. Them diamond players are pre-chosen by riot to be diamond. They aint no better than us bronzies.

Faker aint good cuz he practiced and worked on his game. Nope, he just got lucky. NEVER had a bad game.

fuck and here I thought I could practice and get better at league. GDI.

(Warning, this is long and rambling. flame away!)

I, and a lot of other summoners are all getting rather tired of this sub-culture you have created.

what am I talking about?

This whole "Toxic players make you play bad" idea. It simply isn't true! Please try to understand me. You may think "we never said that!"

You really did.

Let me explain. When you put up hints like "Being toxic to your team causes you to lose x% more often" and "toxic players lose x% more games" You are sending the message that the reason they lose, is because someone else is being mean, because somehow somehow your level of skill is dependent on another persons choices. Some how they are controlling your emotions, and actions.

Bullshit. Thats what we call an excuse. And a bad on at that.

lets break this down a bit. This is a team game. Requires a team effort. Even the best players in league of legends, can not win a 1 v 5. Sure its happened, but not often.

Everyone has something they can do better. CSing, Item builds, objective control, positioning, whatever. EVERYONE can play better.

You do not control the actions of other people. OR their Reactions.

Even the most positive, caring individual will lose games.

By continuing to point out the toxicity of other players, you are shifting the blame of your actions and reactions on them. This does nothing to improve the game.

There toxic players at all skill levels.

So what can we do instead? Focus on what YOU can do to play better. Everyone has bad games. You can't control how your bot lane is going to do, but you can control how you are going to do.

Riot Please, lets keep focusing on rewarding, rather than punishing. There needs to be both, but enough is enough! How can I judge? look at my record! I recognize suck because i'm the master of it! I live it! I'm not losing games because my team was toxic, who cares! I lose games because I have 100 CS at 20 minutes on ahri. I lose games because I have no idea what to do when. Should I roam? should I pressure the tower? when do i all in?

The grading system after games is a good start. I got an A+ for one of my games, I had 130ish CS at 40 minutes. Thats not an A+. that D-. I won because of luck. Nothing to do with who was toxic and who wasnt.

There needs to be an accurate break down of player performance. Something a person can look at and say "That is why i won/lost...that is what I need to work on next game"

why not put something like "Tip: 13 CS is equal to 1 kill" or "Tip: taking a tower is worth 1000 gold to your team!"

Not this idea that you did 22% worse because top lane made fun of your mom.

You are the Master of yourself. No one else. Pick something to work on, and work on it. Gradually improve your own game play. Stop blaming.

Jungler didn't gank? You dont need him. top is raging? Ignore him. ADC threatens to afk? Bye, More CS for you.

Let shift the responsibility of a players skill back to the player, and off their team mates.

EDIT: If you actually believe that your performance is dependent on someone else, you are going to have a bad time in life. Good luck keeping a job when you tell your boss that the reason you suck, is because someone said your mom is fat.

The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. MAKE things happen, Choose to do something, instead of making excuses.

I study neuroscience at McMaster University, in Canada. The TL;DR is that negative attitudes affect people's performance at any task.

Riot claims to have statistics, which I don't dispute or support. The point is, regardless of their claims, this is a known phenomenon.

YOUR negative attitude effects your performance. Someone elses negative attitude makes that person look like an ass. A mature person will ignore them, and strive for success regardless. example? every successful person ever. you think they got where they are because no one ever questioned them? or because they never had a bad day? or no one was mean to them? No, they succeeded IN SPITE of all that crap.

There aren't only mature people in this game, you can't balance the world around that, players can get affected by other's attitude. Just like if I were to encourage my team, they would have a higher chance of winning, if I discourage them they'll have a lesser chance of winning.

Hmm...I had to read this several times. I never said not to encourage your team. Yes that improves your chances of winning. Not disputing that. what I'm saying is quite simple. Dont blame your team when you do bad.

thats is it.

the sheer number of people that disagree with me explains why the majority of players are in silver and bronze. I fully expected the majority to disagree. And they'll stay right where they are. they'll create thread after thread complain about "the system" and this "op champ" or build or item etc. They'll come up with all sorts of lame excuses.

But dont you dare tell them what htey are doing wrong! thats toxic! that mean! you are repressing them! the game is too broken !! everyone else sucks not them!! its because eof so and so!! its all blame blame blame! and riot posts statics that support their blaming. etc etc etc.

I believe you failed to express what you wanted to say. We all agree that you shouldn't blame your team and should instead focus on improving yourself.

The thing is that at some point you said that being toxic doesn't influence the performance of your team, that's on what I and many others disagree.

Yeah, way to go, refute an actual proven fact with some vague affirmation about "every successful person ever". Good debating skill. +1

False. Let's say that your average toxic player keeps typing in chat. That's a distraction. If you mute him, you're not going to be distracted by him anymore, but you also become unable to read the useful information he might write in chat. On top of that, toxic players are less likely to cooperate with the rest of their team, therefore they're putting everyone in disadvantage.

True. Agree with it or not, I dont care, you can sit at the skill level youre at, blaming your team for your performance forever, you stay right there, not improving because its someone elses fault. blah blah blah. someday when youre all grown up, you'll realize "amerugurd! that dude was right! my success is up to me!"

You aren't bringing any argument to the table. You're just repeating yourself the same self-motivational statements over and over again. I thought the boards were about discussing topics, not about preaching your own form of religion.

It's pretty naive to believe every successful person is immune to criticism. Just because they don't show it on the surface level, does not mean they're unaffected. Not to mention successful people need to maintain good public relations, and therefore bombard you with inspirational words that make you think you can be invincible.

Let me give you a very summarized explanation of the inter-personal effects of negative attitude.

Cognitive Dissonance Humans have a belief system, and are naturally stubborn. This is probably one of the most counter-intuitive phenomena. When a person is presented with an argument that goes against their perceived reality, they subconsciously either adopt the new reality or make an internalized explanation to assimilate the new arguments into the existing reality. On top of directly changing a person's behavior or belief system, while the dissonance persists, all sorts of other psychological and neurological phenomena occur.

TL;DR When you tell someone something that goes against what they believe, for example that they're bad when they believe they're not, you will invoke the following phenomena.

Verbal Conflict Equals Physical Conflict The human brain cannot distinguish between an argument or mental conflict and a physical or real conflict. Both cause the brain to behave the same way: enter "fight or flight mode". This is essentially your state of mind becoming more primal and irrational.

Release of Norepinephrine This is a neurotransmitter that (along with others) helps induce primitive or irrational thinking. Once this hormone starts pumping, it becomes very difficult to reason with a person. It also becomes difficult for them to make smart decisions, which you do not want in League of Legends.

Amygdala State The amygdala is responsible for your emotions. When the right neurotransmitters are released and the right neurons are fired, the amygdala enters its primal state. Positive emotions are inhibited and negative ones are more intense. Not only is this detrimental to cooling down, but it also makes you more likely to direct negativity towards innocent others. This causes a multiplier effect in spread of negativity across your team, as well as eats up the already scarce concentration in favor of arguing rather than playing.

Belief System Dilemma I left this phenomena for last because it's difficult to comprehend. Now that your brain is convinced the game will be lost or at least be difficult to win, you will subconsciously perform accordingly. In other words, feeling doubt for your victory will actually make you play to lose. This is because winning is against your belief system. Your brain will do everything in its power to avoid having to adopt a new reality, because it's difficult.

TL;DR People become irrational and primal. They become unable to reason and make smart decisions. They also will insist on being upset towards others, and play towards a loss subconsciously.

Lastly, I just want to add that no human is exempt from these phenomena, nor is it in anyone's control. It's just a matter of learning to understand, cope, and reverse.

Sorry, but this just isn't how human psychology works. You probably also play worse when players are flaming you in-game, whether you know it or not. On the other hand, I don't, being considerably more intelligent and mentally powerful than the vast majority of human beings.

Dont like it? take it up with the millions of people that have overcome and succeeded regardless of the jerks, and never blamed the jerks for their failures.

Most of those millions of people perform worse if a lot of negativity is thrown their way.

Also, what is your point? That we should ignore "toxic" (hate this word, I feel like such a fruitcake saying it) players and focus more on improving our reaction to toxicity? This is ridiculous.

Work on your reaction to toxicity AND punish the toxic players themselves.

You know why toxic players lose more games? Simple, because they don't focus on the game, they focus on what to say to make their team/enemy feel bad.

Toxic players influence other people, even those that play to win, distracting them from the important gameplay information and attracting their attention to the useless chatter. How can you deny that? This is not an excuse, this is just obvious. (Nota: it's also true with "funny" people who joke and chit-chat, it's not related to the positivity/negativity of the comment.)

Nobody is making anyone do anything. That is my whole point. YOU chose to stop playing and type back, YOU choose to get angry YOU choose to not ignore them and get distracted. And then YOU choose to blame them, not learn anything, and go on to not gain anything or better yourself.

But well, you are obviously not debating in good faith, and if you refuse to acknowledge decades of scientific research, who am I to make you change your mind, eh?

None of that supports your point at all. The first link is about people being successful over a period of years. It says absolutely nothing about how they handled moment-to-moment stress. It says nothing about whether moment-to-moment stress affected their performance.

That would be a functional link if people were talking about quitting League entirely and forever because of one bad game. Outside of that, it doesn't work.

Seriously, there's a huge difference between compromised performance for a very short period of time and giving up in the long-term. You can't just conflate the two. They are barely related, and it makes your argument extremely unconvincing.

ItsCalledALance1 votes

Those links were google searches, what you clicked beyond that is on you.

point still stands. Your actions and reactions long term or short, are yours to control.

Using ambiguity as a refute to a proven scientific study is like those blindly devout zealots who refute science with "Well, you can't prove God/s didn't make it so your point is null." You have to actually provide an accredited source when you're trying to debunk a study. A self help book, article, or a motivational quote is not an accredited source. You simply do not have valid proof that your concept is superior.

ItsCalledALance1 votes

Ok, lets back up.

What you are saying is that people being mean, negatively effects you. right?

What I am saying is that you make your own choices.

and you are saying that because you are right, I must be wrong. Right?

I am asking for proof, which you have not provided. You have simply restated your original thesis by linking an article.

Where is your proof that you are not responsible for your own choices?

Sightless661 votes

Those links were google searches, what you clicked beyond that is on you.

What I said applied to anything that followed those links. My point stands.

Your actions and reactions long term or short, are yours to control.

Sure, but pretending that you're completely unaffected by other people in the short term is unrealistic, and leads to worse outcomes than acknowledging that other people can have an effect on you. Additionally, being affected emotionally in the short term says absolutely nothing about your successfullness in the long term. Successful people generally recognize these facts, and they use them to get better outcomes.

keep on blaming your team. You'll stay right were youre at.

False dilemma and poisoning the well. You have no reason to think that I do that, and I'll tell you right now that I don't. You only accept the worst possibility about people who disagree with you. There is waaaaaaaaaay more variation in the people who disagree with you than you acknowledge. you really have a terrible approach to argumentation.

You can recognize that you preform worse with a rager on your team while still getting better at the game overall. There is nothing saying that you have to be unaffected by ragers to get better. There is also nothing saying that you are blaming your team for a loss because you recognize that they had a part in you playing worse. Even a short viewing of challenger streams proves this.

A search from a database of scientific studies showcasing negativity, performance, and stress with many many documented studies of how stress affects performance is far far different than your Google search that contained the likes of Cosmo online articles about "Being above negativity;)" and "Dr. Oz's Guide to Not Letting Negativity Affect Your Life in 10 easy Steps." Uh.... bullshit. Successful people don't just ignore shit. They schedule work and decision making around the times when they aren't stressed. That's part of why they're successful. I work at a hospital, and we actively avoid making decisions about patient care after dealing with an aggravating or stressful patient, because there is not a single scrap of evidence that suggests that anyone is actually able to reliably remain neutral and function at full capacity after dealing with someone annoying. As such, we work around it instead of just pretending that we have perfect control over our emotions. That led to better patient care and fewer negative outcomes on the floors where the policy was implemented.

People don't have complete control over their emotions. Successful people recognize that, and plan around it.

you work at a hospital, I work at a hospital software support company. Guess what? you call us and FREAK THE FUCK OUT every day, I am not allowed to "put you off till i feel better." (using "you" generally not specifically.) You call us drunk while dictating a report for a brain CT, and not able to function and screw up the software. You call us yelling because your dumb ass unplugged the computer moving it around the OR, "I HAVE MY GOD DAMNED FINGER IN THIS GUY S CHEST HE IS GOING TO DIE IF YOU DONT FIX YOUR DAMED OMCPUTRUTSDKJHSDKL RARRR RARRR!!!"

Maybe YOUR specific hospital actively avoids making decisions about patient care while dealing with stress, but from my experience (11 years doing this) that is NOT the majority. I have over 2,000 hospitals running my software, and I have had the exact opposite experience. They stress out, break things, abuse things, mis-diagnose and then call bribing me to change a report to cover their ass, blaming everyone and refuse to take responsibility.

I swear they teach doctors in med school that nothing they do is their fault....

and i completely forgot what my point was. Just fun now because yall have completely misunderstood me. =D

Sightless662 votes

but from my experience (11 years doing this) that is NOT the majority.

Yeah, it hasn't been because hospitals do a shitty job taking data and making changes. The policy is on the upsurge now because of an increased national awareness on studying the emotional states of practitioners as relates to patient outcomes. Good hospitals that actually take data on patient outcomes have majorly been switching over to similar policies. It's a key portion of the magnet initiative and it's been an increasing focus of teaching in medical schools and nursing schools.

The point is, when hospitals make the change to actually acknowledge that their best practitioners are affected by moment-to-moment stress, the result is ALWAYS better patient outcomes. Hospitals that don't plan around this and expect practitioners to have complete control over their emotional state experience a significantly higher rate of medical errors.

and i completely forgot what my point was.

I'm not sure what your point was either. I was expecting you to make some point about how successful doctors don't experience moment-to-moment emotional stress, or possibly that they make good decisions or preform procedures at full competency even when they were annoyed at their patients or distracted in some other way. That would have fit with your earlier claims about how successful people function. It's the logical conclusion of what you were saying.

After all, if people ultimately have complete control over how they react emotionally, and successful people have the best control over that, than the most successful doctors shouldn't ever preform worse because of emotional stress and they shouldn't get annoyed at their patients, right? They should be able to control their reaction. I think that's a fair extrapolation of your argument.

All you seemed to say was that doctors fuck up and oftentimes have trouble using technology, but everyone knows that anyway. It just seemed like a bit of a rant. And you know, there's nothing wrong with a nice little rant, but it doesn't really fit with what we were going on about earlier. It was fun though, so it was still worth reading. Who doesn't like ranting about doctors now and then? We certainly do.

Just fun now because yall have completely misunderstood me.

No, I don't think we did. I think you have an incorrect point of view regarding how people can affect each other emotionally, and I think you were too quick to assume that people who disagreed with you all fit into the box of "has no emotional control, blames their team for everything, isn't getting more skilled at the game".

yeah the first time I read that I thought "wait, nobody jumps into a game and starts pissing on their team! SOMETHING happens to trigger it."

for me its when I hit tab, see that my ADC is at 4 CS at 5 minutes, half health an OOM, and i'm getting 9 billion pings from all lanes for a gank.

I dont SAY anything still though. I just say in my head "yep, he clearly doesn't know how to play this game. I'm not going down there to win his lane for him. I'm going to pay attention to a lane that isn't retarded."

Oleandervine1 votes

You are correct in that it is a team effort - you are incorrect in thinking that the atmosphere your team chat creates has absolutely no effect on the quality and outcome of the game. If Jackass11010 decides to start flaming FairyDruidXO for being a bad midlaner for feeding to the enemy Yasuo, that begins the process. FairyDruidXO gets pissed, and he then starts arguing with Jackass11010 and defending his actions and just fanning the fire. The other players get pissed at hearing it in chat and start to chime in. Now your entire team is focused not on the game, but arguing with Jackass11010 and FairyDruidXO. When your team loses focus on the actual game, they get sloppy, and the enemy team gets kills and it can escalate very easily into a loss because some toxic player decided to start being a dick and flaming someone who maybe made bad choices or just had bad luck. This gets further exacerbated if Jackass11010 is the Jungler or in Bot lane, as his aggression and toxicity towards another player could lead to him just deciding to not help that other player, and again, costing you the game. People do respond poorly to insult, and psychologically speaking, it puts them in a downward spiral and a mindset that the game is as good as lost when it's not even over. Conversely, if you support your teammates and congratulate them for doing well, landing kills, getting towers, or even good plays that they may have ended up dying for, it improves the game because you're boosting confidence and instilling in them that they have good chances of pulling out on top in the end. So don't discount toxic players, because the mind is a powerful engine determining if you have chances at winning or losing.

Furthermore, your assertion that "successful people don't get affected by negativity" is total BS. You're only reading and hearing what those people are spitting out. You weren't in their lives when they were rising to success. It's never stress free and nor is it a negativity void. So so many successful people have had to plow through a world that was against them from the start. They just didn't give up; they're also not the average person in the world either. Most people don't have the drive or ambition to just plow through nor the mental stamina to just ignore the world around them, so using exemplary people is quite a bad reference when comparing to the common man.

yawn...I consider myself quite successful. I've worked my way into a position in my company doing a job many people have tried to get and failed. I take great pride in knowing that I do the best I can every day, and have earned my position. Without being a vice president I can't get any higher up. I speak from experience when I say, I do not allow negative people to effect me. Period. I would not have my job, and my position if I did. I have a very high stress position, where if I make a mistake people could die.

if someone starts spouting off crap, I disregard it without hesitation.

and I'm the worst possible example.
