How is Tahm Kench right now?

I have a friend that plays and he saves my ass all the time since I play squishy characters. He's and overall good support.

Definitely a niche pick, but still does pretty well against most pick/burst comps. His strength is that he can save an ally from almost every situation, but his weaknesses are that he usually puts himself in a situation where he pays the price for it. He is a great defensive champion with heavy duo+ synergy but really doesn't do well in solo queue because he doesn't have the tools to properly initiate a fight, other than small skirmishes in lane with Tongue Lash. I've mained the champion since he came out and he is definitely one that I recommend if you are interested in getting competitive, but realize that by picking Tahm over other supports you are losing quite a bit of damage and teamfight potential. He is definitely worth picking if your opponents have easily broadcast queues for their initiation and you can force them to initiate on one of your squishies before saving them with devour. It will put them in a bad position and your team can follow up.

I played against one as Irelia the other day and it was awful lol
