It's time for blind pick to go

Blind pick has to be the most frustrating experience in the game. These are issues that happen every game:

  1. Fights over who has to support. Few people want to support. The person who gets stuck with it usually just picks whatever anyway, screwing the whole team.

  2. Off meta picks as mentioned above. 3 people took smite in a game I had this morning and then we had a Yasuo support. All of these games were lost and might have been won had the picks been better.

  3. Playing for fun vs playing for wins/practice/ip. There needs to be two modes - serious normals and casual normals. People playing for fun fuck the rest of the team who wants to win/practice/get ip. PFF'ers(players for fun) also feel my wrath when they pick bullshit and don't try.

  4. You also have the standard AFK's, DC's and trolls. A Kat refused to help me and then decided to follow me around for the rest of the game last night, while other players had DC issues.

I've given and taken so many reports based off of what happens in blind pick and the majority of games just aren't enjoyable. People don't get the role they want, people end up playing so they don't have to take dodge penalties and the game comes down to who can get their team to FF first and who can troll the least. Sure draft is an option, but it the q times are long and if you are playing contested picks, you can pretty much forget getting a chance to.

It has to go.

Just don't play that mode. I've solved your entire problem. If your playing seriously, play ranked. If not, normals.

That's not a good solution unless you want "first time ____" and more people struggling with champs in your promo games, and we both know you don't.

That is why there is a normal draft mode. Unless you want to play someone extremely popular/perceived as OP then you have a good chance of playing the champion you want, while possibly having the opportunity of banning a champion you absolutely hate.

Normals drafts haven't been much better in my experience. The support issue still occurs and people like Yasuo either get picked or get banned, and it leads to problems, along with the usual AFK's/DC's/Trolls and the longer Q times.

-The only way to fix the "support issue" is by making the support role more popular. That is it. No matter how you design a matchmaking queue it will always run into that issue. The current draft/ranked mode is the best that Riot can possible due in terms of queue logic because it **limits ** the support role to those who want to play support or are at least willing (fill/2nd perference).

-You see issues with popular/OP champions being selected more often in blind pick too. The only way to fix that is by increasing the number of popular champs, or lower the number of "OP" champs. Matchmaking type has nothing to do with it.

-The only way to deal with AFK/DC/Trolls etc are by dealing with the players directly. Matchmaking type has nothing to do with that. If you remove blind pick all the "trolls" will just move to normal draft.

Draft does take longer to get in a game. But it is impossible to get everything you want (no trolls, everyone happy with their role, no overrepresentation of champs) without making sacrifices somewhere.

  • Yes, the support role needs a huge rework and it's always going to be problematic.

  • I agree that the game needs more balance. Riot has straight out said "it's ____ turn to be strong" with Sejuani a year ago.

  • Dota has a lot of different game modes to solve this. They have 1/10th the player base and the Q times aren't any different. Dota also offers free leaves without penalties when it becomes 4 on 5.

Ok, but none of this has anything to do with the existence of the blind pick or not, and your solution posed in your opening post (remove blind pick) solves none of these issues.

Great Muta1 votes

It does on both accounts. Try again.

How?

Yes, the support role needs a huge rework and it's always going to be problematic.

Removing blind pick doesn't change that. Queue type is independent of role balance/popularity.

This has nothing to do with the existence (or not) of blind pick in LoL.

Blind Pick is not mandatory. It is possibly one of the only true, stable modes that allows players to play whatever they want.

People tend to treat Draft Normals like Baby Ranked, so if you just want to shoot the shit and have mindless fun, Blind Normals is the way to go for that. Don't play it if you don't like it. It's literally that simple.

Great Muta1 votes

Normals haven't been much better for me. Same issues plus the extended Q times and people picking/banning champs.

EndlessSorcerer3 votes

Normal Draft exists.

Play that instead and your problem is solved.

Great Muta1 votes

It really doesn't. It extends Q times, OP picks get taken or banned(making normals games for me a waste since I only play them to play x champ and the fight to not support is still a thing.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Queue times matter very little. Just read or watch a video while waiting for a match to be found.

Though, if you are just spamming Yasuo and Yorick, I can understand why you want to avoid Draft mode. Since Yorick is new and most players hate Yasuo, I can see why you would have trouble getting them in games.

I'm always playing on limited time. So the extra 5 min wait + 5 min draft makes a big difference. Add in a rework/dodge and it affects me.

Weeeeeell, the "casual normals" IS Blind Pick. The "serious normals" is called Normal Draft. That's your problem... Obviously, there are still a few PFF who don't try in Draft, but I mean, it's still Normals, it's there to practice/get IP/chests. The mode to win is Ranked.

Blinds is wretched hive of scum and villainy that deserves the flames of hell.

With that out of the way let me defend it now. Yes blinds are bad but without it, people leveling up would be able to play proper 5v5 pvp till they bought 16 champs. (soon to be 21 if riot follows through with its plan to increase bans from 6 to 10)

It's a necessity to this game regardless of how vile it truly is.

Great Muta1 votes

We'll see what happens with the extra bans. Riot has been more generous lately and listening, so you never know.

*. 20, not 21 ;)

Why do people have so many issues with Blind? It's fast and I can fit in twice as many games, normally, than most people playing drafts. Que times are generally less than a minute long, and just about a minute to start after getting in the queue. No ban phase, not that long to get in a game after someone dodges once or twice and if I end up support, so be it. I play blinds to chill and I rarely get stuck in the support role.

Most people who play blinds already know they have a 1/4 chance of getting support and generally don't mind. And the off meta support picks work 60% of the time, so it's barely bothersome.

Thought it was going away in new client.

It's not the best, I know, but nobody I know plays it, and I'm not actually GOOD enough to play ranked! Sometimes I will ply draft mode,Mobutu hey, that's not perfect either! Luckily, I main support! [slayer-jinx-wink]

Blind pick is miserable, and I only do it when I'm trying to play a frequently-banned champ. Otherwise, draft all day.

But what is the alternative? Drafting requires a minimum number of champs owned, as stated previously, and lots of people dislike sitting through the draft/ban process when they aren't doing Ranked.

A couple months back, I made a thread suggesting we either revise Blind or add a new non-draft mode where, like Draft, you queue as a specific role. That way, there's no auto-locking lanes or arguing over who needs to support. The thread didn't get a lot of support, though.

Dota has a lot of different options to meet various types of players, with the same Q times and 1/10th the amount of players.

All I've ever played is blind pick since I started playing LoL in 2011. It's one of the best ways to learn to deal with being countered. The champs that are typically banned in ranked are in nearly every blind pick game, so you have to find a way to win. Ranked and draft are just too structured and serious for me. I avoid them whenever I can.

It's true it's wasting servers that need to be maintained. It makes more sense for Riot to get rid of it and save money...
