Let's give Miss Fortune some buffs

darkdill··22 votes·3,467 views

Miss Fortune simply doesn't have a place in the modern meta. Lack of mobility, below-par power even in her AOE role, and simply outclassed in single-target damage by Vayne, Tristana, etc. (even though she's not fully designed for single-target DPS). Only reason people would pick her these days is her cup size, and that's only in tiers Gold and lower. (Yes, they'd only pick her because of her boobs.)

Let's make her more appealing, shall we?

#Suggestions for Changes

  1. Update Strut so that at levels 11 or higher, it is no longer removed by minion damage.
Strut's biggest problem is that a single ranged minion can tap you and you lose all that speed. While necessary in laning, it's SO F%CKING FRUSTRATING when you are trying to split-push. Updating Strut like so would make it far more useful in split-push compositions, giving Miss Fortune a better-defined niche. Plus, since this bonus would only activate at levels 11 or higher, her laning phase is completely unaffected, preventing her from becoming OP in lane.

  2. Change Make It Rain to apply Impure Shots. Alter damage and number of hits applied as needed.
Make It Rain is arguably Miss Fortune's worst skill. It does bad damage, only scales off AP, and has a terrible slow and bad wind-up. If anything, it's a waste of mana even if you use it optimally. Since it also doesn't scale with AD, it basically does zero damage to MF's enemies in late-game just from one enemy having a Locket of the Iron Solari. I say to change this up, Make It Rain should apply Impure Shots to enemies who are affected, making it more useful in setting up AOE combos. You could rain it down on enemies in a cluster and then ult them for good AOE damage. There, better ability, better gameplay.

  3. Update Miss Fortune's visuals. In particular, put some "bounce" in her step. ;)
MF definitely could benefit from either a texture update, a model update, or both. I'd personally go with a MTU, plus a small change to a few of her animations: some pre-rendered BOING~! (Come on, Cassiopeia has it. Why not MF?)

Discussion will be appreciated.

AOE 65% slow is not that bad.

Ashe R, Varus WR, Ez WE, Lucian W, Caitlyn WE don't scale with AD too.

Not that bad? It's glorious. Ok, it was glorious, a lot weaker now in the League of Mobility, but it's still hella powerful.

Ashe R is global, Varus can do % damage with his W just on base damage and hitting another ability on a marked target, Lucian doesn't need a slow, he speeds himself up, Caitlyn W is a long ranged root, E is an escape that slows heavily. The problem isn't the AP scaling on MF's make it rain, it just costs too much for doing so little.

The5lacker1 votes

I wouldn't call "Being able to stop a gank in its tracks without a support nearby" doing little.

Don't use it as a harassment ability or even a dueling ability. Use it as a disengage.

XxxLumberJackxxX3 votes

Caitlyn has an escape and long range to kite around fights, and her passive deals surprising damage that scales. Ashe- needs help, but her massive stun and slows een out the lack of dmg Varus- tons of utliity, %hp dmg, etc Ez- AS steroid, CD steroid, spammable poke, short cd dash??? I could go on...

MFs job is to deal explosive dmg. She can't kite. She can't dodge skillshots, she can't peel (her slow is laughable because it isn't maxed 2nd or 1st and lategame most fighters will have tenacity).

Her AD dmg turns into Magic dmg for her W, which turns into additional dmg on her ultimate so... She deals 0 dmg after lvl 11.

If her W turns into AD damage on her ultimate (only) so that armor pen works with her ult and black cleaver she'd probbaly be in a fine spot. Yea that's probably literally all she needs.

Tenacity doesn't do anything against AoE slowing fields. The only thing that reduces their effectiveness is Boots of Swiftness due to its Slow Resist, which...I think I'm the only person who buys.

darkdill2 votes

I get it sometimes as Ashe, but only if I'm planning on getting a BoRK instead of a BT (i.e. against a Mundo or Volibear).

The problem is MF has a greater-than-average scaling on her AA's because of Impure Shots (which, as magic damage, has 100% armor penetration innately), strong utility between her Grievous Wounds and 65% AoE slow (which allows her to force fights and win trades unlike almost any other ADC in the game.), she has strong harassment even through minion waves with Double Up, and her ult is one of the strongest teamfighting ults in the game. She pays for it with limited in-combat mobility and a relatively weak AS steroid. She just isn't played frequently at the moment because hyper-mobile ADCs like Kalista are so strong at countering her. She doesn't need even the slightest buff. Perhaps a limited power adjustment between abilities, but no straight power increase.

darkdill8 votes

The problem is that MF has no MPen, which means her Impure Shots damage gets innately halved (on average) against fighters with natural MR growth even if they get no MR items.

As for buffs, at the very least, the first one I suggested should be done: upgrading Strut so it isn't removed by minions once you're level 11 or higher. That would be a buff similar to what Garen got on his passive versus non-epic jungle monsters, and would help MF with her map mobility by removing a pet peeve of hers: getting randomly tapped by some perverted ranged minion.

Captain Aishi5 votes

i wish they reverted her "update" where they made W scale with AD and R scale with AP, that change kills her pen damage whether she goes AD or AP... i miss AP MF :(

Natural base MR on melee champions at level 18: ~55

55 MR reduces incoming magic damage by roughly 35%

Natural base Armor on melee champions at level 18: ~85

Natural base Armor after 35% reduction from LW: ~55

Man, when you stop to actually do the math, you notice something funny: Last Whisper only reduces base Armor to the levels that a champion's base MR is at, so that Impure Shots damage is going to be doing roughly as much per point of AD as the base Physical damage of the attacks.

But of course, lets assume that the target in question has built some resistances, we aren't trying to snipe an assassin, now, are we? Assuming MF is carrying, that means the enemy has probably bought them either a Randuins or a Frozen Heart, then possibly a Sunfire Cape or Iceborn Gauntlet. And, because they're oh so popular, they've probably got Merc Treads as well. So that's gonna be about +140 Armor or so, compared to the +40 or so from Merc Treads and masteries and whatnot.

Armor on fully built Tank: ~200

MR on fully built Tank: ~100

Effective Armor on Tank after LW: ~130

Well, would you look at that? It seems to be that, given Last Whisper only pierces 35% of a champion's Armor, if they have even fifty percent more Armor than Magic Resistance, point for point Magic Damage is going to be more effective than Physical Damage against them. Isn't that interesting? Plus, considering Impure Shots is just bonus damage anyways on top of the basic .5 second cooldown, up to 250% total AD scaling, on-hit effect applying basic attack that she has as an ADC, the bonus damage from Impure Shots is just icing on the cake that, while not explicitly benefiting from buying a LW, benefits from the situation that would require you to build a LW, I.E. an opponent stacking armor, as Magic Damage has 100% Armor Penetration.

The more you know!

FearEngineer1 votes

Ohhhh so that's why she is so strong

The5lacker3 votes

It's not that she's "So Strong" but she is harder than a lot of ADCs to shut down if she gets ahead, as the normal items that counter ADCs (Randuins and Thornmail) are a tad less effective than her. In addition to her magic damage, her passive speed boost counters the on-hit MS slow on Randuins, and her big AoE ult isn't reflected by Thornmail as it only reflects physical damage from a source that applies on-hit effects (Incidentally, her Q's damage is reflected by Thornmail, including the AP portion of the physical damage from it. It's weird.)

Of course, on the flip side, like most ADCs she doesn't have any hard CC to her name, just an AoE slow, and while Impure Shots grants a lot of magic damage and utility, what it doesn't grant is a whole lot of AS (60% for 6 seconds at max rank is decent, but underwhelming) or any synergy with lifesteal, the only think keeping most ADCs alive. She has some strengths, the biggest one of which is the fact that she has a hybridized damage output, but she has some very glaring weaknesses that your team has to play around in order to be successful with her. And unfortunately, the most popular ADCs in the game right now don't particularly share those weaknesses, or have them but excel to such an insane degree in something else (Kalista's stupid mobility, Draven's burst, Jinx's utility, etc.) as to render her trade off's irrelevant.

MF is an older champion design, and while she has a lot of good she's also got a lot of bad to work around. She's very well balanced at the moment, just...not a meta pick. If you have a friend to duo bot with who can grab an aggressive support like Leona, Thresh, or Blitz, she can do a lot of damage and prevent the enemy from snowballing. But she's a lane bully who doesn't scale well, so she needs to end the game fast, which ruins the full build fantasy a lot of ADCs have. If you've built four of your six core items on MF, the game has gone on too long, and you're going to start falling off. Fast.

FearEngineer1 votes

I was giving you a hard time but those were some really great discussion points.

I used to play MF quite a bit and I guess for me, I just can't adjust to the relative lack of power in her ult. When you played her in the death cone days... it just doesn't seem as fun.

Some quality of life buffs would be enough to get me to use my arcade skin now and then though!

The5lacker1 votes

I kinda figured, but I enjoy rambling about design theory. :D

I would necessarily...object to some QoL tweaks to MF. So long as her power level remained the same. Like, her MS bonus scaling with level and not being broken by minions, but being lower before that point. Or her Q's mana scaling being 40/45/50/55/60 so she has some easier, cheaper lane bullying, which she's honestly lacking in right now. Or bumping up the AS bonus on Impure shots to 30/40/50/60/70% but reducing the duration to 5 seconds and tweaking the cooldown. All sorts of incredibly minor power tweaks that would make her a bit smoother to play.

SpecterVonBaren3 votes

They could also put that scaling cost on her E. Having it cost 80 mana at rank 1 of the ability is just ridiculous.

The5lacker1 votes

It's not intended to be a repeated harassment and damage ability. That's Q's job. Her E is a disengage/utility skill. It has a mana cost of 80 because at Rank 1 it's potentially 90 damage and a 3 second slow. It's a very strong skill.

DragoonRuin3 votes

No, Guinsoo's isn't really good on MF. In general it's just a very inefficient item on anyone. Guinsoo's is one of those items, where its designed for Hybrids, but watered down so much its not efficient.

Remlap12232 votes

Update Strut so that at levels 11 or higher, it is no longer removed by minion damage.

Absolutely. This would be a huge QOL benefit for MF.

Change Make It Rain to apply Impure Shots. Alter damage and number of hits applied as needed.

Agreed, on the condition that it does physical damage. Give it a 100% bonus AD scaling at maximum damage as well. Although I'll say as a protip from an MF main, max it second so you're not worthless in teamfights.

Update Miss Fortune's visuals. In particular, put some "bounce" in her step. ;)

Heh. Boobies. Anyways, I'm pretty sure she's getting the Alistar treatment, so yes, you can milk those.

Tobeyeus2 votes

Strut should give a constant MS bonus that doesn't disappear when damaged and then have a gradually increasing bonus as well that reaches 70 MS at 5 seconds as it does currently.

Level 1: 10 MS at all times 12 MS every second over 5 seconds for a maximum of 60 MS Level 6: 15 MS at all times 11 MS every second over 5 seconds for a maximum of 55 MS Level 11: 20 MS at all times 10 MS every second over 5 seconds for a maximum of 50 MS Level 16: 25 MS at all times 9 MS every second over 5 seconds for a maximum of 45 MS

This would keep her mobile and scaling into the late game mobility creep, the passive ramps faster as well. At 2 seconds MF will have 34 MS at level 1, 37 MS at level 6, 40 MS at level 11 and 43 MS at level 16.

I will say I was disappointed with the AP Miss Fortune changes. The fun of Mage Fortune wasn't making her abilities scale with AP since they did Physical damage, it was the Impure Shots scaling with AP. What good is physical damage scaling with an inferior AP ratio when it will get negated by armor? You had to sacrifice AP to build a Last Whisper so that Q and R actually do damage or don't get Last Whisper and still do less damage since armor lowers the damage.

Q should only scale with AD, W should only scale with AP, E should stay as it always has and scale with AP and deal magic damage and R should only scale with AD and still apply stacks of Impure Shots. This way Mage Fortune still gets AP scaling on her Q and R but via stacks of Impure Shots and Impure shots can benefit from Magic Pen. This would also improve AD Miss Fortune since her R would now scale with AD.

I agree with the above person who posted that Miss Fortune only needs her stacks tweaked. Other then her Passive being more reliable I think she is solid. Maybe her Q could have a chance to Crit on each hit. Another option would be to allow her W active to be applied to Q and R. Or have R fire faster (Not fire more waves) based on Atk Spd. It would allow her R to channel faster so she is able to get off the full channel with less chance of the enemy evading or interrupting her. It would also create a nice interaction with her W as well. Small changes and tweaks to give small situational boosts in power.

wait.......is Guinsoo's Rageblade good on Miss Fortune? I mean hear me out, the attack speed, the AD, the AP, the lifesteal, the spellvamp.

I think...MF doesnt neef a buff......She needs a rework overall. Her identity is not there, she is like a legendary bounty hunter, who I think is kinda reckless...she lured her enemies or flirt her way out if she need to....she should be the aoe queen.

This is like....my kit for her.

Passive: Fortune Shots Miss Fortune's basic attacks and apply stacks of Fortune Shots for 4 seconds. Upon reaching 4 stacks, the target is charmed for 0.25 / 0.50 / 0.75 seconds, an enemy cannot be affected by Fortune Shots again for a few seconds.

Miss Fortune's autoattacks deal 6/8/10% AD bonus magic damage, stacking cumulatively up to 4/6/8.

Q: Double Up Miss Fortune fires a shot through an enemy to hit an enemy behind them, dealing physical damage to the first target and increased physical damage to the second, applying on-hit effects to both.

W: Strut Passive: Miss Fortune gains 25 movement speed after not taking damage for 5 seconds, which gradually increases to 70 movement speed over 5 seconds.

Active: For 3/4/4.5/5/5.5 seconds, Miss fortune doubles her passive movement speed bonus, and she removes any slows.

E: Make It Rain Miss Fortune rains hundreds of bullets down onto target 400-radius area. This area lasts for 3 seconds, slowing and dealing magic damage every quarter of a second to enemies within....remove cast time...make it rain applies Fortune Shots.

R: Shock and Awe Passive: Miss fortune gains bonus attack speed 20/30/40% and while W is active she gains 80% of magicpen.

Active: Miss Fortune empowers her Twins Pistols within the next 8 seconds, gaining access to an alternate set of abilities. She may only cast one of those 3 abilities.

  • *Q: Cannon Ball: *Miss Fortune fires a massive cannonball at an enemy unit, reaching the end of its range, the cannon explodes, dealing physical damage in a 800-range cone behind the target , knocking it and surrounding enemies back.

  • W: Bomb Stiletto: Miss Fortune uses her guns to dash quickier, enemies along her path take physical damage and she leaves a trail of fire for 5 seconds that will continually deal magic damage.

  • *E: Bullet Time: * Miss Fortune channels for 2 seconds, spraying up to waves of bullets (The number of waves fired scales with her attack speed) in a cone in front of her, dealing physical damage and applying Fortune Shots' passive magic damage and stack to all enemies within the area.

You know, that's a really cool kit.

Miss Fortune isn't nearly as bad as you say she is. I've mained her for a long time and I do perfectly fine. She much more damage output than most ADCs, a better teamfighting ability than Sivir, and doesn't have many huge fall offs. She has some utility but she is a very scary damage output.

I don't think Miss Fortune is the problem, I think it's people that don't understand how she works, what to build, how to level her up. I've seen some crazy things like Essence Reaver as MF's first item but she's suppose to be built like an average ADC.

Miss Fortune has a lot of strengths and she's great at teamfighting, ganking, dueling, and objective control. She however doesn't have a direct escape and she has cast times, plus her passive is easy to counter. Still, imagine a Miss Fortune with no cast times, a dash, and an unbreakable passive. She would be a monster and need to be nerfed immediately.

Still Miss Fortune has maintained around a 51.70% winrate with about the 30th highest pentakill average in the game. Mind you that these scores are constant and while win rates in general are bad to go off, I think having a 51.70% win rate that very rarely changes is good and you know the champion has potential to win games if played right.

Season 9 Amumu1 votes

honestly, i think the most helpful thing could be as simple as a slight range boost and base damage boost. if you are going ad with her, there is far too much risk you place yourself in than just ap since you have relatively more range and burst damage early on. maybe make her w damage ignore a portion of magic resist. i agree with strut too. perhaps you could also just make it decrease in increments when it is deactivated so she isnt left instantly immobile, so going from its full charge to deactivate in about a second rather than instantly

How about Mage Fortune?

Slamurai Jack1 votes

I've actually been playing MF a bit this season in Plat, and I've been extremely successful. I'm not convinced she's bad at all. I would argue that she's one of the best lane bullies left in bot lane after Lucian's nerfs, she automatically counters any sustain reliant champ, and her q being targeted has netted me many, many kills on enemies that flash or dash out of my auto range. The only change I would like to her is to give her passive the Garen treatment, just as a quality of life change. Perhaps the change you mentioned for her E as well, because it is a pretty meh skill right now.

As much as I would love annihilating people with her if she were buffed, she's fine as is. I recently held a 1v2 bot lane with her (no sup because of champ select drama in normals).
