Sion underpowered?

Why does everyone say Sion is so underpowered?

Titanic hydra makes late game sion auto attacks do 500 dmg He is a cc monster Nearly ungankable split pusher Incredible map presence with ultimate >I have a 70% winrate with him

As a sion main with around 200 games with him behind my back, the last thing i want to see is Sion buffs. If he gets buffed, people will eventually qq about it and he might end up in a really bad place. Right now he is perfect, and he doesn't need buffs or nerfs.

I would really like a base armor buff right now its only 74 at level 18 which is very low for a tank

Marshmallow Wolf2 votes

that balances his health stacking

Spoofghoul4 votes

No his abysmally low base health already counteracts his healthstacking.

Marshmallow Wolf2 votes

I guess you're right. Although, the size difference is crazy different and I realized it the moment I got in game.

His passive needs a buff, he is just SO EASY to run from when killed (I mean, he spends too much time stunned after he is killed), else he is ok.

Spoofghoul3 votes

Yes the passive needs a buff.

It requires you to die Dieing is hardly an ideal situation in the first place.

His passive has it's moments, especially when you're... haha... backdooring the nexus

this

Love those moments. Great gor removing the last bits of the tower health also.

Marshmallow Wolf2 votes

the passive is just meant for trades in lane and close teamfights. It can make a difference... but it needs a buff imo. even karthus can hit all five champs with his passive

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Actually his passive is counter productive, once you lvl up his passive gets weaker since it drains faster per level if I were riot I would remove lvl 2 and onward drain that would make it useable.

He suffers the same problem many tanks do in the brave new world.

All the CC in the world means nothing because you'll never reach that Cait with canon/shiv with a bajillion range and 13% bonus move speed*[zombie-nunu-bummed]*

Marshmallow Wolf4 votes

that's what his ult is for. just run at the adc, stun them, e, q, and they're dead

Ralanr1 votes

Like clockwork. I usually use W right when I Q. Just to make sure.

MetalGearTeemu1 votes

an ult that at short range ( the only range you can hope to hit any competant ADC ) is worse then a Garen Q, and can be side stepped.

"Just run at them" seems like a great way to waste your only engage.

Ralanr1 votes

Element of surprise helps. Plus with its low cooldown at max level, you don't need to use it to hit. I sometimes use it like a taxi.

Well, since you obviously know something we don't, why don't you tell us how to build/play Sion properly?

Marshmallow Wolf1 votes

what are you trying to say? I'm just sharing my opinion and asked for thoughts

ZeroQuest961 votes

And I'm answering with a legitimate question. Most people who say Sion is underpowered may not actually know how to play him (myself for instance), so if someone who knows how to consistently do well (yourself for example) outlined how Sion should be played then there might be less of a dispute over his power level.

Sion probably feels underpowered compared to other tanks to most people because they don't understand his power-spikes. He's a lot weaker in the early game than most tanks since he has no defensive steroids, is squishier than some ADCs, and has to build/farm for his tankiness. He's a mid-late game champ, though he can be decent early if you know how he works.

Most people will say that he needs an early game buff, but they don't see that the removal of Brutalizer and the penetration changes are an indirect buff to him. With the exception of his passive, any buff to his early game would push him over the top and eventually get him nerfed to (most likely) an even worse state than the end of last season.

It's not that he is underpowered or anything, it is just right now he is in a confusing spot. When Sion's rework first came out, he was unique but with a balanced price. A lane bully tank with a great late game if you knew how to use him, however his abilities could be avoided. Then reworks were made that copied off of Sion, and Sion got nerfed directly and indirectly. Is Sion bad? No, especially if you know how to use him. However now he's the tank (or juggernaut, or etc.?) version of Azir, only a Sion main can use him.

As for many of Sion's problems follow: Problem 1: What is Sion? Is he a tank? A juggernaut? A lane bully? A giga-carry? What is he? He feels like all of these, and none of these at the same time. Well he is tanky with cc, but that cc is unreliable unlike lets say Malphite Maokai who you can very much rely on their cc. Now pointing out those two champions, they have gap closure flash style of some kind. Sion does not, not even his ultimate, his ultimate is more ghost with steroids. So that makes him a juggernaut! Well not exactly his damage isn't nearly as high as the other juggernauts. His title even makes him out as a juggernaut but he isn't! Now is he a lane bully? Somewhat a full Sion combo makes dueling him early game a pain, but that combo can easily be countered. Okay so he has infinite HP stack so that makes him a giga-carry! Well nope not really, HP% damage is still so common that a mosquito has it. So his infinite HP hurts him more as the game progresses. So in the end what is he? He really has no defined role.

Problem 2: Too many really bad counters. You've pretty much already lost the game if you pick a Sion or the enemy team counter picks in champ select with Fiora Kindred Vayne and maybe more. Other tanks can still be useful against these champions since their CC is again reliable. But since Sion's CC is not reliable he can't really do anything against them. Counter picking and hard counter picking is healthy, brings strategy, counter picks that remove champions however is not.

Problem 3: The infamous problem of "why pick him?" Before when you picked Sion his power was unreliable BUT DANGEROUS. Got hit by a Sion combo? OUCH! But they nerfed his numbers so that now he tickles you with his combo. Sion was the only balanced numbers champion there ever was. EXCEPT FOR HIS E, it needed that mana nerf badly, the damage nerf however makes it a useless move now. Anyway you can side step his moves, you can cc him mid Q, you can read what he was about to do, you have a chance to shut down his power. Not like Tryndamere who you either out number him or he out numbers you. Sion may out number you but you can beat him without having higher numbers. So now that Sion has so much unreliability and no numbers backing it up, why pick him? Top lane? Might as well pick Darius Irelia Malphite Maokai they have more reliability and power. Jungle? Amumu maybe more, not sure of jungle now in preseason 6.

Reasons to pick Sion: Well if you have fun with him then play him! I still have fun with the big guy and still play him. Also one advantage Sion brings to the table is that his CC may be unreliable but it really messes with the enemies mind. Sion is the master zoner, you don't want to get knocked up by his q, or when he ults you don't want to get hit by that. A real psychological brain busting champion.

Incognonymous2 votes

He needs: -Base armor buff -Base health buff -Reactivate W sooner, increase damage cap against monsters -Slow immunity on his passive

Boom. Sion is fun to play.

BipolarMaelstrom1 votes

Not really much of a cc monster when compared to other tanks like Nautilus.

Vincent Lucius1 votes

Really? Naut is exceptional at choosing one person to hold still with his passive, then his Q, has an AoE slow with E and then can press R to make sure at least one person gets knocked up. Sion can hold almost a whole team still for more than three seconds if he lands a good ult Q combo and then do some decent damage by popping his shield. His CC needs setup, but when he locks one or more people down with a combo it's a beautiful thing.

500 damage autoattacks don't matter when you have 0 armor pen to back it up and spend 90% of your time in fights either channeling or being kited

sion is very hard to master...

  • passive = wtf.. worst passive ever
  • Q is not burst damage
  • w = easy
  • e = no brain and funny...
  • r = extremely hard.... but very powerful cc and game changer...

he cant handle against burst type or you will miss a lot of opportunity to damage...

i usualy built him as full tank except item 3025 or item 3078 .. depend on my team...

if you master his ult then you master sion!

Ralanr1 votes

I don't know if he's hard to master, but he is pretty damn fun. I really need to stop messing up the Q sometimes...

AL0001 votes

if you play against rengar, kha, olaf, riven another burst type and q wont be full damage done....

i said hard to master because of passive and R... need to know where to position and etc....

Ralanr1 votes

Honestly in those match ups (in a lot actually) I tend to rely on my team for some damage. Hopefully I can keep em in place long enough for my allies or my to bring em down.

AL0001 votes

yes you can... tanky sion will still damage if stay too longer because of his tankiness...

Dominick Destine1 votes

I really like Sion's rework... but the numbers were raped hard on a character that was already pretty niche at best.

He is one of the worst characters in the game, right there with Urgot and Sona... he does need buffs , possibly a buff to his atrocious defensive base stats and a slight boost in MS would be enough.

Akali is SO HOT1 votes

Over here in this section of boards every champion that is annoying to play against is overpowered and every champion that isn't overpowered is useless and needs massive buffs. That's why

Twitch Chat1 votes

The only thing that irritates me about sion is how his W passive only serves to offset his 73 HP/level. Thats just a point of irritation more than a need for urgent buffs though.
