League isn't dying

It hasn't been declining since season 3, it's population isn't slowly but surely decreasing, the decisions that Riot is making isn't driving out the playerbase at large. Stop using your frustrations with the game as an excuse to spout bullshit. Saying something that is objectively untrue is not going to make your complaints valid.

While I don't think league is dying, I don't think it's experiencing the explosive growth it used to and is peaking/plateauing. Of course, this is true for the entire genre.

Your argument is also sketchy because it's easy to misconstrue or trick a statistic like that. "We have 100 million monthly players....across all servers and including smurfs and alts", some people boasting several accounts in the numbers of 5+.

AeroWaffle3 votes

The issue is, how would one separate the smurfs and alts from the main accounts so that they can accurately say, "We have X number of people who play the game monthly".

At the very least, "Monthly players" shows that each account is active at least once a month. Dead accounts, smurfs that are forgotten, and banned accounts are not included in the statistic.

I agree that the statistic is likely to be inaccurate to a degree, but there really isn't any other way to increase the accuracy.

across all servers

Games typically advertise how large their player base is across all servers.

ModCaptainMårvelous11 votes

See, that's the thing: You don't separate it.

From company standpoints, you just report people playing. Not smurfs/alt accounts/etc. Because big numbers = good business. Doesn't matter if they log in and play all day or you log in, watch a vid and then log out. The question we have to ask is how much we trust Riot and how much stock we can put into their statistic. To me? Not all that much.

AeroWaffle6 votes

I believe you're greatly overestimating the number of people that have multiple accounts.

What reason does the normal player have to create additional accounts? All their stuff is likely on a single account and playing on a smurf offers no progression on any other account.

ModCaptainMårvelous4 votes

Well...

  • Accounts for testing stuff, such as new champs, rune layouts, etc.
  • Bans/suspension avoidance.
  • Smurfing. etc.
AhmCha3 votes

I definitely see the flaws in my argument, but I would also contend that smurfs add value to the game through skin purchases and such. Also, we don't know how many smurfs are in League so it's difficult to separate them from the rest. Thank you for being polite about it nonetheless.

"100 million palyers" yet we need autofill to find a match

Pandemic Punch2 votes

100 million players world wide. You play in one region

Nickssaa10 votes

Regardless on what region you're playing, it is most likely larger than most other games out there, and yet q times are still insane

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

And in one of the biggest regions. It's just a fact for years now that there are 100 million ACCOUNTS. But the peak point in s3 was like 30 million actually active players. Which is STILL huge. Nevertheless there is not a single reliable source about the current state of league and the fact that riot removes more and more game modes bc "q times" and implements autofill on every mode indicates that league indeed is pretty much dying. Not fast but slowly over the course of the next few years.

Sraeg20132 votes

Exactly.

If the player base is constantly rising then why they have to shit out features that lower queue times left and right and still not get any closer to the intended goal?

Sraeg20138 votes

"100 million players", yet the queue times are twice as long as last year before autofill was added to the game.

KONO RUBICK DA5 votes

ikr? but they will do anything to defend riot

TotalJerk3 votes

Keep in mind that League games are 35 minutes long on average. People that don't count for your queue:

  • outside your skill/mmr/summoner level range
  • currently in a game
  • in a different queue (blind, solo, flex, ARAM, TT, etc.)
  • Queued as any other role that search has already been found (if only support and ADC are open, only people that queued one of those two is a viable addition.)
  • 5 man premades
Pandemic Punch1 votes

Yep! Don't forget about all of the people who are ahead of you and have priority as well. :)

TotalJerk2 votes

I'm guessing that before role selection was a thing the game length was the second largest reason for long queue times. The main one is that Unlike most games, League doesn't do join in progress.

RainbowIcee2 votes

players are largely separated by elo and game mode. Most players are in Bronze/silver, and not only that tons of people play blind pick. Also matches last approximately 30 mins. Putting these things in perspective is actually impressive how fast people find a match(unless you're very high elo). The numbers really are quite large.

smurfs -_- like how many times do you have to be told raw statistics matter more then the processed ones before you learn.

it is dying i wouldnt be surprised if they had people smurfing out there ass hell im at what 200ish games ive had about 100 or so smurfs players in my games about 1 every other game.

AhmCha13 votes

Ok, another condescending response with a non-argument, cool. We don't know the portion of players that smurf, and anecdotes mean nothing. We've been given the data that League has 100 million monthly active players, reported from Riot themselves, the only people that could possibly have that data, which makes it both the most and least reliable data on League's state that we could possibly have. Yes, you can interpret it as a lie, but I don't see why a game company would lie about their only game's state of popularity seeing that it is their bread and butter. Also, even if say 10 million of these 100 million active players are smurfs, so what? Their still spending money on the game, buying skins and whatever contributing to the financial well-being of the game.

Anyway, you're point is legitimate to an extent, but phrasing it in the condescending way you did makes it hard to engage in any meaningful conversation.

its a perfectly legit argument and you are the condescending one -- smurfs no raw stats are you Chinese? do you know how the Chinese are? they have the biggest player base. tencent buying so many shares doesn't mean the games doing okay. -- you got checked and your butt hurt because you want to misinform where as im saying there are clear and gaping holes in your logic and reasoning

ign says the same thing. guess what ign has been hit as a pay to play review site. i wouldnt doubt if forbes is the same.

keep being condescending and youll keep proving my point.

At this point you're just spewing meaningless garbage like the Givenchy guy did, so this is going to be my last time responding to you. You said nothing of any value in your reply and used meaningless ad hominem. You and I are clearly not going to agree on this subject, so I'm not gonna waste my time with that. Have a good one.

To be fair, it's not unrealistic for a company to give a misleading statistic on that. Advertising that their game is already popular might make people more inclined to try it out.

Sraeg20136 votes

The thing is it wasn't the company that gave those statistics. Check the article and all citations.

You will find none.

Forbes points to Polygon, Polygon points to Rift Herald and Rift Herald points back to Polygon.

Should I also not that Polygon is the cancer of gaming-related "journalism", but also that Rift Herald was created and is owned by Polygon?

Velzard of Koz2 votes

How exactly is he being condescending? At this point you use it as an escape card from any discussion saying basically ,,You just offend, you know nothing, your argument isn't right, I'll just leave, bye." That's not much better. Then speak about frustration in argumentation.

Sire Hippington8 votes

Well, monthly players isn't the best measure. I play an aram or rgm every now and then, so i am one off the mothly players, yet i wouldn't say i'm an active player, atleast not compared to my multiple games a day that i head S1-S5 Smurf acounts is also a valid argument, inflateing the number by some. But most of all, what region? If it's world wide, it's pretty clear it's still improveing, all the 'wildcard' regions getting more support, especially asia, which has a much larger population than europe+NA.

More interesting would be the player base for each region(pretty sure players in africa, latin america, asia and oceania are increaseing, but player in the original western regions, eu and na, are declineing), aswell as the decline rate of veteran players each season.

Karfuss7 votes

This is a bit of a non-sequitur.

While League does attract thousands of new players, the problem with League, and mostly due to Riot's design philosophy, is that it cannot hold long term players well enough to keep them playing.

These statistics also don't consider number of hours played, age of the accounts, number of smurf accounts etcetera that are required to draw well informed conclusions.

Sraeg20133 votes

For example the number of ranked accounts (not monthly, weekly, etc, simply ranked accounts) haven't significantly changed compared to last year.

Captain Aishi3 votes

the only statistic I do know is that the number of Ranked accounts in NA has decreased by about one million since season 3

SteelMankind1 votes

Wouldn't that mean people are enjoying League more though?

Sraeg20132 votes

Excuse me?

This year NA has 300 thousand ranked accounts less compared to last year around the same time. A 20% drop doesn't sound like "enjoying the game more" to me.

SteelMankind2 votes

Yeah - they left ranked to play normals only, and so are having more fun.

TyroneWatermelon6 votes

League is dying for the veteran players, not newbies

kasfas5 votes

A better statistic to use would be total game hours played per day. In that way you know whether more people are playing the game or not because one person can only play so many hours of the game in one day, regardless of Alts and smurfs.

Im A Jayce God5 votes
  1. How many of those players are bots? I go in ARAM on my level 24 account and it will be 2 normal people and 7 bots.
  2. How many of those are smurfs? I have 4 accounts that I go on and play a game a day off of.
Golden Tager X4 votes

One thing that is not taken into account wholly, is bot accounts and smurfs, which make up at least half of those accounts (seriously I have learned that even bronze 5s have smurfs for some reason) 100 million individuals that play league, no, not even close. 50 million is probably around where the player base is at.

Sraeg20137 votes

Nothing is taken into consideration. If you gave it a moment, you'd realize the number is pulled out of somebody's ass.

There isn't even a quote, not even a mention when the number "100 million" appeared durning that "interview". Of course Riot isn't going to deny it. Why would they? It's free advertisement!

Just look at how all those tabloid articles source one another.

Polygon cites Rift Herald and Rift Herald cites Polygon.

"Read the rest of the interview HERE!" You check that "HERE" and what you see is the link to the article you just closed.

A click bait. That's it. There is nothing more.

Dynamic que actually dramatically decreased the number of ranked games played per patch as an objective and real stat. That's the only thing I know for a fact effected their bottom line.

You don't need sources to point out that "100 million players" in itself is a claim that doesn't mean anything at all without context such as unique users, average play time (compared to before), loyality and the list goes on. If you wanna present numbers you have to do so in context, otherwise they're _always _ misleading (such as in OP's post). 100 million players could literally mean anything depending on the way its presented.

Also, let's not ignore the fact that the forbes article is based on pure heresay with no actual statistics to back it up. I can guarantee you that such an article would not qualify as a source within academia.
