I remember running full %mana per level runes on AP Kog'Maw in S6

Right before they runed (ruined) the rune system I would do crazy, unique builds where I'd run full %mana per level runes or when Kog'Maw jg was a thing I would run FULL (no AD or armor or MR whatsoever) attack speed runes because I believed in what I was capable of with the champion. These options was honestly what made my gameplay so unique and fine tailored. Sure, someone could copy my rune setup and masteries but they wouldn't necessarily be able to execute wave clearing or mana management or kiting in the jungle. The mastery options were fine tailored for me, something I could go into the game with that I had completely customized to fit MY style of gameplay. When rune builds didn't necessarily work out in a game, I would be able to take note of what I was lacking and fine tune the build even more. I really missed being able to do that.

Now, I only have access to some raw stats. And in the small assortment of stats, there are some that heavily outweigh the others. Not only is there a lack of options, you're almost forced to choose specific stats over others because they're blatantly superior. In the old system there were general rune setups that were more or less optimal, that you could quickly make and hop into a game and they would help out. Currently, the runes feel so absent and useless. You could play a game without the rune shards and you really wouldn't be able to tell if you had them or not. They have no impact on how you play the game. Old runes were very polar in terms of which portion of the game you'd be investing in. Assassins could choose armor penetration for the early game if you had wonderful level 2 (like Talon). But they weren't forced to choose armor penetration because they had other options like exp runes to cheese level 2, AD runes if they weren't sure about being able to capitalize in the early game, and so on.

Riot has more than enough money to no longer have to sell rune pages. They need to bring back the fine tuning that the old rune system had WHILE retaining the current display.

Just because you had the option to doesn’t mean it was good.

What made it bad?

Additionally, I didn't say it was good or bad. I said that it made gameplay very unique and customize-able. It's current iteration is the same cookie-cutter rune setup that everyone uses where some champions use it better than others.

You're right though, for a game more options doesn't necessarily mean that it is good for the game. Typically, for new players its bad to be overwhelmed with a lot of options but that is what makes the game personable.

If you were to suggest that they go further with what they recently did to the small stat changes by making them separate from your tree combination, sure. I'd be all for it. Give me back the option for 10% crit or crit damage instead of 10 adaptive force.

But to only ask they bring back the old rune system on top of the new one can't be done. They already adjusted every single champion to account for the loss of stats from the old runes.

But every champ wasn't adjusted right either. The old system you could pick all three defensive options- health, armor, MR, and add in mana/mregen too.

They only "compensated" each champion with ONE stat- some got health, some got armor, some got MR, some got mana regen. But only one and not anything else, which drastically changed the way the game was on top of defensive runes/masteries being taken away as well.

Oh no, I agree. While it wasn't common to see people bring runes that only work on a few champions who were in different roles (like crit damage that only really worked on Yasuo and Ashe), to see them decide with no input whatsoever from anyone in the community that ALL ADCs always brought AD/Armor despite the strength of mages bot was ridiculous.

And they did nothing.

What would be the coolest is if they added the old runes, but now named masteries and with free pages. Essentially reversing their roles.

But my point was that they did adjust champions, so they'd have to got through and revert all of that. But many were changed even further after the initial change, so they'd have to go through and check those as well.

My best experience with old runes was coming up with my AP Ezreal page. I'd go into a game, see what it felt like I was too low on, and adjust the page accordingly. I ended up with a page that gave some Mana Regen, about 7% CDR, and some AP.

I feel verified in my page when a few months later Runeglaive came out, with Mana Regen, AP, and 10% CDR, and made AP Ezreal popular. I felt like I had cracked the code before hand.

That said after they removed the AP from Sheen and changed the Masteries I didn't bother anymore. Most champions I straight up didn't care to customize.

Yeah, I loved the old rune system.

It was far from being one-dimensional. If anything, the new runes are.

Always loved the occasional 1% crit rune as well. I miss that.

Not having played with the old runes too much I still think they were a more diverse option. I'm sure there was one generally accepted page for each champion but I'm sure most players adjusted slightly here and there to make the page their own. I can see it being intimidating at first for new players and gating them behind currencies seems odd. Having some customization for certain matchups would be welcome. Maybe expand the stat shards to 5 lines, and dont limit them to 3 per category but make it chose what you want in any. So you could stack health or armor or ad or pen or whatever.

It's not diversity of choice, it's just giving you a whole bunch of trash that will never help you in any way but you had the illusion that it did.

I play some champions differently than others and my rune setup certainly did help me.
