Tristana and the Great Bomb Robbery (Example of Riot Favoritism)

Tristana was once a unique ADC who was very safe, very easy to play and exceptionally good at her role. Some would even call her "balanced". Then there was Zilean , a seriously underplayed support who was a strong niche pick and was not known for being toxic (coughAhri Ekko Fiora LeeSin Riven Yasuo ). However Riot, in their infinite wisdom and American corporate values of hyper-Capitalism and greed decided to waste time on "reworking" two champions who never really needed any changes. This of course was to distract people from the champions that were obviously toxic and so Riot could continue to release more toxic champions with overloaded kits that would appeal to their "LCS" playerbase but ignoring the "peasants" like you and me who played this game for fun.

"Oh no!" said Riot Zilean is a toxic champ that uses point and click bombs but has NEVER been complained about but WE think he's toxic so we are going to completely redesign his completely overpowered ass because we LOVE mages so "sarcasm" and we are going to make his primary source of damage "his Q"... (His ONLY source of damage) into a skillshot so that people can dodge it.

Meanwhile, we are going to take his Q mechanic and give it to Tristana because there is no way in hell ADC's could ever be as toxic as Zilean! "sarcasm". So that is the story of how Riot, in their love for all things AD/Assassin/ADC's gave a mechanic that they originally called "toxic" on a mage to an ADC with twice the mobility and twice the safety.

And that my friends. Is exactly what Riot stands for. Hypocrisy and Hyper-Capitalism. Long live Riot and the USA! "sarcasm"

Zilean was pick/ban status in midlane before the rework because he did too much consistent and reliable damage and had basically a zero cooldown ultimate lategame, turning every teamfight into a 6v5. Don't you remember the long period where Faker started this trend?

Tristana was also pick/ban status back with the old protect the carry / support compositions (Lulu top, Orianna mid, Janna support, Nunu jungle). It created extremely passive games because she was essentially worthless until 3+ items and level ~13+ and was just really not fun to watch.

Both of these reworks were good. Tristana is still played, she has her niche, and she's still quite good lategame. Zilean has a lot of potential and I expect he would be played if other supports weren't so overloaded. Zilean is still actually quite good as a midlaner but he's more burst damage while the meta calls for sustained damage (Azir, Viktor, Cassio).

However, it begs the question, why did this need to happen in the first place. Both were fine, the way they were. You are hardly going to tell me that Zilean was so OP it was on the level of Yasuo Ekko

both of those champs have been nerfed and neither trist or zil was fine they were no broken but they weren't balanced either

actually, zilean is even more annoying to lane against now because he can completely deny an area of the map, that is (like ekko), if you don't want to suffer a stun and major damage

zilean has some of the highest burst damage there is every 3 seconds...his only weakness being his kit itself, a big weakness at that

now his damage is no longer reliable in exchange for a stun and a lower but consistent ult

i personally just love the zil rework it took away his q which i thought was toxic even as i played him and turned him more into an area control mage sure his skill floor is higher now but i still think hes a very viable pick if you know how to play him

personally im glad hey changed zilean yes hes much harder to play now then he was before but his lane phase before was really oppressive especially on melee champs like a fizz literally couldn't be in lane against the old zilean (i know this becase i shit on a number of fizzes (oh the joy)) so his q did need changing his speed up got slowed down but i honestly dont find it that big a deal his kit is still good really when people complain about zilean what i hear them say is "rito pls now zilean requires some mechanics to play wtf"

for trist i feel like shes some what weaker now yes she has a great late game but it takes her a long time to reach that status were she can 1v5 like she used to she is good at pushing towers thou but ive personally never won lane as trist (i always end up laning against jinx thou) but ive also never lost lane to trist yes she is super safe but she has to be because her early game is so weak she would never survive long enough to make it to a late game

That still doesn't change the fact that Trist got Zilean's old bombs after Riot called it "toxic" on Zilean. Complete double standard.

Zilean had point and click, massive scaling bombs that did heavy AoE damage. Tristana has point and click, decent scaling bombs that require 4 autoattacks to do decent AoE damage.

Zilean pressed QWQ on you and nuked half your health bar. Tristana pressed E on you, then has to autoattack 4 times for her damage to not be pitiful.

Why does Tristana get that and Zilean had his gutted. Again... Double standard.

Because a lot of Tristana's damage is locked away behind multiple autoattacks. By itself, her bomb is shit; 100(+1.1 bonus AD, +.5 AP) is a horrible base and a ratio only good lategame (at which point her autoattacks with crit are doing more). Her point and click requires her to commit to continue autoattacking you and you to not disengage at all. Zilean's point and click required him to press Q once and then, if he was feeling fancy, pressing WQ before walking away.

Tristana has to autoattack 4 times for any significant damage from E. There is counterplay in that you can disengage, CC her, or damage her enough that she can't safely stay in range in disengages herself. Zilean's counterplay was entirely "don't get in range of the guy with a massive speed boost".

i came here to drop knowledge but you apparently already have well done sir well done

Alright but why does she absolutely NEED that. I mean seriously, its unfair that she gets a point and click bomb yet Zilean, part of his identity is considered "toxic" and removed.

Because it gives her some reliability, keeps her as a simpler champion, kit wise, and due to requiring a sustained trade to go even (because of autoattacks and only having 2 damaging spells without ult) gives her ample counterplay. Literally 33%-50% of her abilities damage is locked behind getting 4 autoattacks off and using W on you; the reliability of a point and click allows that as otherwise her bases and ratios would need to be buffed to make up for an extremely unreliable amplifier that her damage had relied on.

Basically, you don't get the point at all. Tristana got a mini rework and had half her base on WE removed and placed behind a "you need to autoattack 4 times for your damage back". In her rework, she lost range, attack speed, base damage, and ratios (though all her ratios were AP, so losing them didn't hurt AD Trist), and cooldowns. In return, she got better potential damage if she uses her E amp correctly and a AD scaling on a skill; if she does not use the amp (which has ample counterplay and does minuscule damage unless she autoattacked you several times) she loses most of her damage.

Zilean got an AoE stun, zone denial, and theoretical higher slows/ms buffs (not really due to how the caps work, which Riot needs to look at again). He also had his bombs gain increased damage and range, but lose the point and click.

Look at it this way. Zilean lost a damage skill that had a counterplay of "never get in range because you'll take massive damage instantly" and got an AoE stun and denial field to make up for the unreliability added. Tristana lost a damage skill that had a counterplay of "never get in range because you'll take damage instantly (I'd add massive, but unless you were against AP it wasn't)" and gained a potentially increased damage IF she can autoattack 4 times, which adds ample counterplay (disengage, scare her off from following up, force her to focus a non E'd target) to mitigate her damage. Both of them had a previously pretty toxic spell; both were reworked.
