There's a hard mismatch between competitive meta and the needs of a queue with position select.

Title.

This is the basic premise of position select: selecting your position indicates what you're going to do in the game, and what kind of champion you're going to play. (E.G., if you're assigned mid, you're probably playing an assassin or a mage, and you're probably playing a kind of carry role.) This ensures we all have a framework, a schema, for understanding who will do what at champ select. It facilitates communication, and successful collaboration to build functioning team comps. Importantly, this assumes a fixed kind of meta to function, with specific champions and roles (roles as in divers, enchanters, wardens, etc.) in specific positions.

However, when we're seeing Ornn/Alistar bot lane, Taric mid with funneling strats, Irelia in every lane, Mordekaiser fiestas, and god knows what else, solo queue becomes a nightmare, because selecting your position is no longer really selecting what you're expected to do in the game. Add in the volatility of solo queue teammates, and I expect solo queue will be a VERY unpleasant place this patch. People who aren't keeping up with competitive will probably flame if someone doesn't pick an AD carry. An angry Yi might ask why mid lane can't play Taric. An avant-garde Vlad bot player might get unspeakably tilted when his support, unsurprisingly, has no clue how to lane with Vlad. It will not be pretty.

We, as players, are being presented with a choice we shouldn't need to make: we can follow solo queue expectations and meta, or follow the pro meta that trashes those expectations. Either way, we lose out; either we lose the positive relationship between the pro meta and what people play in solo queue, or we lose the basic schemas that govern solo queue champ select. (As a kicker, given that the pro meta used to inform what champion picks were and weren't expected, solo queue communication will break down some regardless; divorcing the meta from pro also removes some of the schemas we used to parse champion selection.) As the roles of jungle, mid, and bot become increasingly vague in pro, the basic expectations that govern solo queue communication are going to suffer, and that's just going to make everyone playing suffer.

I think increasing champion diversity was fine; good goal, noble intentions, good direction for the game. However, increasing the diversity of roles per position absolutely was not a good thing for solo queue, and we got that too. I hope we see some stability soon.
