Who's the most poorly designed champion in the game?

Just curious, there's a lot of champs that have obvious design flaws.

Why is Katarina not on this list..

stealthfox943 votes

Only allows me 10 spots, and I don't think she' s that poorly designed.

Sona Ping2 votes

Because the term "pubstomp pick" does not mean poor design.

Tryndamere probably. He's designed to overwhelm people who don't know how to play against him so he can go to other lanes and overwhelm them. However he becomes dead weight if you outplay him once.

He just needs a rework badly. There's nothing great about him, and he's so annoying to play against at first.

Aatrox Aatrox. Okay concept; gameplay severely lacking. Gimped by his passive and built in lane sustain, cannot be very effective in team fights. What really sucks is that he was hyped up to be a God of War Darkin Race and he inspires armies with his combat prowess, but he turned out to be a solo split pusher that falls off harder than Pantheon's shits down the mountains of Thermopylae. He's outclassed in almost any area he could excel at. There are tanks that do more and sustain better, there are fighters that are stronger, and there are splitpushers who push harder. He's really just a bunch of stats wrapped into a generic fighter champion with a revive passive. I want to like Aatrox. I really do, but I can't find something besides his lore to like about him.

Darius is pretty bad, in that it's never a skill matchup. Either he counters you and there is zero counterplay besides sitting back and waiting for jungler intervention, or you counter him and laugh at his face while you stay barely out of reach and wear him down to nothing, with little he can do about it. Also, his reset is the only one that does NOT trigger on assists, so he is encouraged to KS and not help his team unless theres's an execute in it for him. But then again I love playing him.

Vladimir Mordekaiser Akali Katarina may not necessarily be poorly designed, but they ruined the spellvamp stat for everyone because they synergize with it far better than any other champions in the game, and when spellvamp is strong they exploit it to obnoxious levels. Poppy she exemplifies the fighter problem. She has a little bit of everything and it's unclear what her role is. She also has very few weaknesses. Her only real weaknesses are true damage and her shit early game. True damage is relatively rare, and people can work around her trash early game (like by taking her jg for example. It's insane, you have to try it!). Once she has some items, she becomes obnoxious to deal with, and it doesn't help that she can build whatever she wants and still do massive damage while also being tanky thanks to her passive and ult.

Vayne she's an ADC who can take care of herself just fine. This runs counter to the entire definition of "glass cannon", in that if she is skilled enough, she can fight without someone protecting her because of her mobility, invisibility, and self-peel (this is why smurfs always play Vayne, they can hypercarry the game without depending on the support 20 divisions below them). As interesting as an assassin/ADC hybrid sounds, it just doesn't work out very nicely, at least in this case.

Darius is pretty bad, in that it's never a skill matchup.

Chogath (maybe, never played the matchup, but I'm confident I could play a Darius without totally crushing him) Garen JarvanIV (fun lane, would recommend) Pantheon Tryndamere Fiora Riven (to an extent, Darius is cited as a counter and the match-up is probably in his favor it's closer to even than people think) Rumble Renekton (slightly in Renekton's favor IMO)

All fairly even match-ups.

stealthfox941 votes

For the most part this is true, although Darius should beat rumble and riven pretty easily.

For the most part this is true, although Darius should beat rumble and riven pretty easily.

Darius can easily kill Rumble, but Rumble can just as easily do the same to Darius. Don't underestimate his damage. Champion.gg also has their win rates against each other at about 50% for both.

Riven has a stronger level 1, maybe a stronger level 2, and is one of the few champions whose level 3 compares to Darius'. Darius has the advantage because he's more innately tanky and can rely on his good base damages to fight her, but I wouldn't classify Riven as an "easy" match-up simply because you can fuck up and get yourself killed if you make a single mistake. There's a lot less margin for error playing Darius against Riven as opposed to, say, playing Renekton or Garen against her.

Katarina was only strong with Spellvamp way back in S1 and early S2. Why?

Because, back then, her kit worked differently:

  • Shunpo was a major part of her damage, and somewhat more spammable. As a single-target effect, this worked well with Vamp.
  • Her Death Lotus wasn't classified as a AoE spell. Rather, every single dagger counter as a single-target effect, giving her a lot of mileage from Vamp.

However, nowadays, Spellvamp is mostly a noob trap on Katarina. Especially now with Shunpo's damage being nerfed even further.

Only Play Darius1 votes

Now that spellvamp is calculated pre-mitigation, I feel that I'll her ult is going to give absurd healing. Also, I haven't been playing that long, I have just heard from others that katarina was one of the big spellvamp abusers whenever of was actually a worthwhile stat.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

Don't always believe what you hear from others, then. Or at least take it with a grain of salt.

Even with the change to WotA, I can't see Vamp becoming particularily good on Katarina. The two things I wrote above, the ones that changed Vamp from being a good stat on her, still apply.

There are actually two kinds of Spellvamp abusers:

  • AP-based ones: The likes you wrote, Vladimir, Akali, Mordekaiser. Add Kennen and Rumble to that mix (they used to go SV, back when WotA was a stacking Aura, too).

  • Bruisers and fighters with high base damages. Way back, when they changed Treeline, Riot introduced Lord Van Damm's Pillager as an AD Spellvamp item - and removed it only a few patches later. Why? Because, unlike Lifesteal (which mostly just gets absurd with a dedicated offensive build), Spellvamp's synergy with ability base damages meant it could actually synergize with the high defenses that bruisers and fighters tend to put on (and hence become virtually unkillable).

Chessburger1 votes

Spell vamp was an added bonus of buying gunblade because she had AD and AP scaling on Q and R (the reworked version has it on W and R). And the ad scaling was really good so combined with the Active slow to keep people in range (not as many mobile champs were around back then who could simply dash out) it was a really great buy. She didn't heal that much with the spell vamp to be significant because of the aoe nature of her spells other than E. Oh and what the other guy replying to you forgot to mention is that WoTA was a great item rush on Cassiopeia back in S1, early S2

WalkingInACircle3 votes

Gonna go with Yasuo . Doubled crit forcing builds, wind wall is super binary, infinite dashes is just plain dumb, ult is mechanically reliant on comp. He needs a rework!

2nd place for Kalista .

Hard4Hamsters3 votes

I think Kalista should have been two champions. Or at least parts of her. The hopping around everywhere is okay, the insane objective control on her Rend is okay (though I really think the damage needs to be capped), but what is up with her best butt-fucking friend forever thing? Her black spear is a good concept too, even having a vision sentry seems okay, but I feel like it missed the mark in terms of a two champion synergy type champion it feels like they had 2 champion ideas, and just mashed them together to make this monstrosity. Pretty much she has her passive on her W and her Ult that involve her support, but the rest of her kit just screams solo carry, kite for days, Rend bitches, get money.

I dunno. That's just my opinion. Though I don't think that she, nor yasuo are the worst designed champions.

3TWarrior1 votes

kalista is actually fairly balanced as odd as it seems XD no one can explain it when she should have mega damage, but doesn't

for instance, her rend does 60 + 60% AD for one spear and 32 + 30% AD for each additional spear, 4 spears and you hit for 150% of your AD, though that's bad, 3 spears is 120% if you read it already

I casted my vote for Yorwick, the evil offspring of Yorick and Warwick. God help us all.

Rebonack2 votes

Tossup between Vlad and Riven.

Shields and heals with no cost are an abomination.

Maximum Zilean2 votes

Broken by design wise? Poppy is my vote. There is a reason she is kept in an over nerfed to hell state. And nerfed to hell again whenever she gets popular. Riot doesn't want you to use Poppy because her ult and passive are just so broken.

3TWarrior1 votes

thought it was just because she was melee only range? she has to get within like 500 or so distance to pop her ult, but then she can attack whoever or whatever she likes. her Q being switched to magic damage also doesn't make much sense

Only Play Darius1 votes

She isn't in a hell state right now, she is actually extremely strong (but don't tell anyone, I don't want her to get nerfed!)

At one point this season she had a 100% winrate in challenger.

Mister Boogaloo2 votes

Annie.

Point and Click AP burst mages with AOE stuns are really hard to balance. If there's no risk in pulling off your full combo then it makes it really hard to balance her. She's not OP right now, but it's really hard to keep her in a good place because of her design.

kit = tie between veigar and gangplank overloaded Q's and lack of skill synergy, they're just far too niche usage. design/skin = yorick, i just see a green and brown blob, i dont really see a champion. big hunch and a stick, i wish he had more detail.

I refuse to believe you have never spammed laugh and talked shit in allchat when you get fed, calling the enemy team pathetic noobs and whatnot. I'm sorry but I can't believe you, I have yet to meet an LB player who was even remotely pleasant to play with.

I spam laugh on everyone, especially LeBlanc, but I've gone 2 and a half years without any sort of warning or punishment. I think you need to take a break from League. It's obviously only causing you to become a salty tuna fish =o

And I think you need to find a new main. How does it feel to have your prized Leblanc have her winrate sent to the gutter? How does it feel to have your main unplayable?

I can feel it from here, and it's got me feeling so good!

She's not unplayable, people just suck dick with her. I'm actually glad that her winrate is in the trash, it helps to shut the whiners up about her.

;3 You sound miserable.

Lost R1 votes

Pre-relaunch Sion. He was an abomination of a champion, composed of Arnold Schwarzenegger references, and he was an bruiser tank mage thing. His kit didn't make much sense, he was ugly as sin, and his ridiculous AP scaling made him stupidly powerful with next to zero counterplay.

3TWarrior1 votes

elise and evelynn top these champs unless you are meaning "broken" or "op" instead of poorly designed

evelynn's only purpose now is to help a lane snowball early(as any jungler does...) and then build tanky late game or die. her kit has little to no synergy with her play style (for instance, an ult that does a small aoe burst damage % current hp that shields her) an assassin with a shield that doesn't function and an ult that literally can't kill its target. Her Q is very short ranged but is a targeted effect. Her E is entirely physical so unless you build AD or nashor's tooth, it's useless to her

elise: her kit is still pretty bad for team fighting

Yasuo has never truly been balanced.

Ekko definitely is up there, dunno why he's not on the list. So is LB, and frankly, I'm just going to say it, Zed's design really isn't healthy.

Chessburger1 votes

Vladimir because he scales defensively by building offense and offensively by building defense. And because he ruins the fun of having useful spell vamp on other casters simply by existing. (they have to keep spell vamp a bad stat just so it doesn't break him and maybe akali)

KazaLyn Shao1 votes

Kassadin. Design team really wanted Zeratul in this game. Too bad this isn't Starcraft. Infinite teleports = dumbest design known to man. Kalista is a strong runner up with the AA hop.

Spider Chief1 votes

I kinda want to say Galio just because of his ult. It bothers me so much that he's gotten buffs in the past, but they still ignore the fact that most of the time, you need to Flash in order to actually utilize your ult.

ABlueQuaker1 votes

Teemo is pretty poorly designed. He either gets steamrolled in lane and does nothing all game, or he creates an incredibly infuriating experience for the enemy team with very little interaction or consequences. It's quite literally a case of placing a Shroom and walking away.

Pantheon and Elise are just as bad. Provided the enemy's health bar drops at a higher/equal rate as your mana bar, you can poke them out of lane with very little interaction. If they try to farm, they get poked down. If they get poked down, they have to recall. If they don't recall, you can all-in with an Execute and plenty of tools to escape/nullify return damage. If they do recall when they get poked down, their tower will die instead.
