@Meddler: What is Lux's "gameplay identity" compared to other long-range mages?

darkdill··2 votes·1,066 views

Ziggs is the building killer, Xerath is the mobile artillery, Vel'Koz is the true-damage laser monster, but what about Lux? Doesn't her identity have clashing issues with Morgana?

What'd be your reason for picking her over other long-range mages? Crowd control? Morgana is better. Damage? Xerath and Ziggs are better. Safety? Doesn't count for nearly as much these days with rampant assassins.

More raw AoE burst. Xerath and Ziggs do more damage when they can spam spells but Lux's combo is more likely to pop someone.

Also she's got that AoE shield.

This.

Lux is essentially the long-range pick mage. Who, for some reason, also has a shield.

That's the thing. If she's a long range pick mage, that needs to be spread out between all of her abilities. No more shield. Damage from her ult and E go into the new W (with no utility).

Now her ult doesn't have a frustratingly short CD for the burst it does, she isn't overloaded with range, damage, AND utility, and her pattern overall is more healthy. She likely actually has to land her Q to kill someone.

She doesn't have a real 'gameplay identity' outside of long range. Its a bunch of random shit thrown in a pot. If she's going to have the identity of a long range pick mage, she needs to be reworked as such.

There's no reason she can't also have her shield.

Same reason Xerath doesn't get one. Same reason Ziggs doesn't get one.

If she gets to keep her shield, she loses her bind. Or she loses her range. If she has a shield, she needs to have a purpose for it, otherwise its just extraneous power.

Why should she have the safety of long range, along with the safety of CC, along with the safety of a shield. While also having very high AoE damage capable of 100-0ing anybody not specifically building against her on relatively low CDs? Something's gotta give.

If she gets reworked, she's not staying as overloaded as she is.

Her shield enables her to be a great sup. As Lux you can shield yourself and 4 allies during a team fight.

Ziggs has a mobility move. There is no reason a champion can't have a little off-class utility.

Lux's shield means she should win trades with her burst and it makes her pattern the best at what it does without getting it to the point where she can simply delete any champion from levels 3-18.

Ocerloaded with a healthy win rate. Lol. Someone just got dumpstered by a lux.

Then she'd just be a worse version of Xerath??

Lux does waaay less dmg than Ziggs/Xerath when her ult is down since she doesn't have a spammable Q like they do. Unless she's using AAs to proc her passive (in which case she still does slightly less dmg), and doing that sacrifices her long range safety.

It's only when she gets a Q+E+R+Passive that she does similar dmg to their Q+W+E+R combos (and it's still slightly less).

Her shield is not that good anymore. It's now 110+20%AP per hit (and it takes ages to come back). It gives her a bit of utility and makes her feel different than Xerath.

Everything. More range than Morgana, more safety than Ziggs, more utility than Xerath, etc...

darkdill1 votes

Is that really an identity, though?

Buff Jax please2 votes

Being a well rounded mage? Yeah why not? Not every champion has to be super individual and unique. Lux does alot of things well without really excelling at anything. That makes her a flexible pick who fits in any teamcomp vs basically every team.

She is classified as "Long range chick"

I'd say it's her utility most of all.

Counter Bruiser-Bruiser,

In all seriousness how does "non-specialist immobile mage" sound.

lux is the longest range artillery support mage.

Lux is the best all-purpose mage around. A little of everything with a support bent. She is Support Special Forces.

Lux has a shield because she's going to be standing way in the back behind her allies her will be peeling for her, so it synergizes with her positioning by letting her shield a bunch of teamates without aiming away from the enemies she's throwing her other spells at.

For identity: Lux is THE definitive 'if you have deaths at the end of the game, you fucked up somewhere' mage. Even if you lose the game, you should still have very few or zero deaths as lux if you've played properly.

I really hate that mentality when it's a case of "you got counterpicked, so you fucked up". There's no way to ban all Champions who can counter Lux, meaning she's always going to be potentially threatened by someone who can ignore her safety.

You shouldn't be dying as lux if you play right. Not even to a zed or a yasuo or something. You might not get a lead on them and you may fall behind in cs, but you have more than enough tools to not die in lane phase, and then you can buy zhonias or whatever and use your positioning to keep yourself safe.

She's a utility mage chill

I play primarily poke champions and tanks, and Lux is one of my favorite champions.

It's just her utility. Three of her skills can protect her team. People always just see her E has an AoE explosion, but the slow field is incredibly important to optimizing her play patterns. AoE shield her team, bind the enemy two front liners, drop a slow field they have to walk through.

In the laning phase her play pattern is just eitehr get free damage with E->auto or trade while your shield up.

Compared to Xerath who outranges her and Ziggs who has the highest DPS uptime, Lux is like a cross between a Xerath and a Lulu.

Massive utility, zone control, and huge pick potential. She definitely has her own identity.
