Why are Sorcerer's Shoes not consider a "Magic" item?

Laraso··45 votes·2,608 views

If you sort the items to only show "Magic" items in the shop, item 3020 does not show up despite offering "magic" penetration in addition to being a core item on most AP champions.

item 3006 show up under "Attack" but item 3020 doesn't show up under "Magic".

Rito fix please

Because the "Magic" section covers cooldown reduction, mana, mana regen, and ability power. Sorcerer's Shoes do not have any of those stats, and thus are not in there.

Laraso9 votes

I understand that. It doesn't make it any less stupid that item 3020 doesn't show up under "Magic" items.

Saint Archer2 votes

it does make it less stupid, because there's no "magic penetration" or "movement speed?" tabs under "magic", therefore why would it be under the magic tab, if it doesn't fit the classification of the sub-categories?

greaves show up under the "attack speed" sub-category becauseeee (guess why) YAYYYYYY you got it!

Laraso4 votes

Since you seem to have completely missed it, I'll quote myself: "I understand that."

Hunters Machete shows up under "Attack Damage" despite not giving any. Why can't the same exception be given to Sorcerer's Shoes? Frankly, I find your condescending attitude rather disgusting.

Saint Archer1 votes

Machete doesn't give the AD stat but it adds damage every auto attack, therefore belongs under the "damage" category. Besides, it has to go somewhere. i'm sorry i just don't like people who can't understand simple concepts such as categorizing.

Laraso4 votes

So you're OK with something that adds magic damage on hit to monsters belonging in the physical damage section of the store, but for some ungodly reason you throw a fit whenever somebody suggests that Sorcerer's Shoes which increases any and all magic damage you deal should probably belong in the magic section of the store.

You keep acting like I don't understand why things are the way they are right now, despite me telling you multiple times that I actually do understand, and pretending like it somehow doesn't make sense for me to suggest that item 3020 should intuitively belong in the magic section.

LeeDark1 votes

The fact that magic penetration and armor penetration aren't part of the terms used to describe these categories is (guess what) YAYYYYY... oh wait, you obviously didn't get it. That's the stupid part, stupid.

yeah lets add two whole new sections for the like 8 total items that fit in either one that are already fine where they are, but ultimately because YOU think that sorc boots should be in the magic tab.

Well, technically speaking. Sorcerors shoes by themselves do not increase the magic damage you do. If the enemy has 15 magic resist, sure they will make you do more damage. but if somehow they had 0 MR, sorc shoes would not increase your damage.

Zerkers will increase your dps regardless of how much armour your opponent has, as long as you have less than 2.5 attack speed when you buy them.

I'm not saying I DON'T think sorcs shouldn't be classified as a magic item, I'm just trying to reason the logic behind them not.

So if you had 2.5 AS, zerker greaves provides zero damage increase. Technically speaking that is.

Which is under your control. Your opponents effective magic resist is not entirely.

I was just saying that they both become useless in certain situations.

LeeDark4 votes

Actually, having Zero MR isn't under your opponent's control, either. BASE MR is the minimum an opponent can reach on their own, so ZERO MR would have to come from YOU.

CubedJustice1 votes

What if somebody has an abyssal that isn't you?

LeeDark1 votes

That's still your team. The point remains that Sorc Shoes are a magic item and should be searchable as such.

CubedJustice1 votes

Am I the only person who goes to movement items instead of the specific attribute I need for my boots?

B1naryB0t4 votes

IIRC, if they have 0 MR, that's when it really helps your damage, cause I think you can go negative. Could be wrong though.

Tannhäuser Gate3 votes

Only on reduction and not penetration which sorcs give

Laraso2 votes

Except that if they have 0 MR, Sorcerer's Shoes will make their MR -15, meaning you actually do bonus damage on your attacks.

So no, you're wrong about this one.

Duke Anax1 votes

only item 3001 and item 3091 can go negative, oh and Fiddlesticks and Amumu I think.

Soraka and now Ryze sadly lost that abbilityx, i think they are getting rid of negative MR:

Nope. That's incorrect. Magic penetration only IGNORES MR, it doesn't actually reduce it, so an enemy cannot have negative MR due to magic penetration. Only MR reduction, like Abyssal Scepter, can make someone have negative MR.

Laraso1 votes

Well, I was always told that any sort of MR circumventing item, be it reduction or penetration, could reduce someone in to the negatives. I guess what I was told was wrong.

No champion in the game has less than 30 base magic resist though, and its impossible for them to get 0 without you (or your teams) direct input. Since it is impossible for one to reduce their own MRES (excluding Anivia. Technically.) SO its pointless for you to even mention this.

Its, basically, the same as zerker greaves and AS. The only way the enemy is going to have 0 MRES is if you make it zero, just like you having 2.5 AS is on you.

So technically Sorcerer Shoes always increase your damage unless, again, you are already reducing their MRES to 0.

I think you missed the point. He's trying to provide a little bit more context and I think he hits the nail on the head.

You see, technically speaking (just as he says) Sorc Shoes DO NOT increase the damage that you do because there are no ratios for MPen, but there are ratios for AP. If you upgrade to Sorc Shoes your total damage STAYS THE SAME, but your effective damage will increase when fighting characters with resistances. For instance, if you bought Sorc Shoes and go back to farming minion waves or monster camps, your damage has not actually increased at all. By that logic, it is false to say that Sorc Shoes will always increase your damage.

I think it's important to note the difference between the two because you have to take a look at each champion's kit to determine the best build path. Some champions have good base damage and would rather find MPen while some champions have high AP ratios or utility ratios and want AP. Sona and Kassadin want AP while Sion and Elise want MPen. Do you see the difference? AP will increase Sona's ability to heal, shield and speed boost her team whereas MPen cannot offer those same benefits.

I hope that can help clarify, good luck!

Actually if you have more magic pen than your target has MR, then you deal bonus damage.....

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Incorrect. Magic penetration cannot cause effective Magic Resist to go negative. Magic Resist reduction, such as that caused by the item 3001 aura, can drop Magic Resist into negative numbers.

Some champions kick to attack.

Kouga2 votes

Simple.

The shop sorts Attack items into the following:

Attack Damage (AD) Critical Strike Attack Speed Life Steal

Treads grant Attack Speed. Thus, Treads appear under Attack Speed.

The shop sorts Magic items into the following:

Magic Ability Power Cooldown Reduction Spell Vamp Mana (Mana Pool) Mana Regen

Sorcs do not grant any of the above. Thus, they do not appear under Magic.

Boom, knowledge.

Laraso1 votes

Obviously. The point of this thread is that it's stupid how there isn't anything for magic penetration and therefore Riot either needs to add a magic penetration + armor penetration section or grant an exception to Sorcerer's Shoes like they did for Hunters Machete and add it to the magic section regardless.

Maybe read the responses in the thread first, because there are like 5 different people who all said basically this same exact thing already.

cause corki builds it with ad, and rito loves adc

That's weird.

I don't normally use the search function, but I definitely support this change because of how intuitive this should be.

Sirsir1 votes

Its makes sense. Its a complete oversight that needs to be fixed, but it makes sense. It doesn't offer any of the stats listed under the magic section. This was before they started using smarts (putting Machete in AD even tho it doesn't offer any.) when coding in where items go.

Honestly I really wish they would get like 5 AP just so they would show up there when filtering

Saint Archer1 votes

ok smart guy where else would machete go? also, i'm not throwing a fit, despite you saying you understand you still say that something that doesn't fit under a category should be under that category. it's in movement speed, and under pretty much any recommended section on a champ that you would build it on, there's no reason for it to be listed under a category in which it doesn't belong.

Laraso2 votes

Where else would machete go? It would go in the "Starting Items" category, just like every other starting item in the game. It also shows up in "Health Regen" under defense and "Mana Regen" under magic. So according to you it's OK for an item like that which already belongs to multiple categories to also be a part of "Attack Damage" despite not providing any attack damage, but Sorcerer's Shoes is somehow not allowed to show up under "Magic" because "it's in movement speed" and "there's no reason for it to be listed under a category in which it doesn't belong" despite Hunters Machete also being in "a category in which it doesn't belong".

I'm done talking with you if you're really so dense that you can't comprehend why someone would want Sorcerer's Shoes to show up under "Magic" items.

Curling Veigar1 votes

most ap champs is the right set of words here.

LegendaryLemur1 votes

Yeah i don't really understand why there aren't armor penetration/reduction (under attack) and magic penetration/reduction (under magic) sections in the shop.

Arkainic1 votes

Berserker's Greaves show up under "Attack" because it builds out of a dagger, which is considered "attack" Sorc shoes just build out of boots and a combine fee, thus, no "Magic" tag.
