Playing against a Garen for the past couple patches...

... is literally one of the most frustrating experiences i've had in League in 3 seasons of playing. I have literally never felt so frustrated trying to play against any other champ.

Why?

  1. He's nearly impossible to trade with in lane. All he has to do is auto minions until he gets grasp, and then Q you and spin then walk away. You are silenced so you can't rely on your spells to trade. You cant auto him back otherwise you're standing in his E which does a shit ton even at early levels. And then even if you manage to get a meager amount of poke in he regenerates it all with his passive and Dorans Shield/Second Wind/Bone Plating combo. Besides maybe Darius I have not seen a single toplaner actually be able to trade with him.
  2. His W gives him way too much tankiness for how easy it is to stack, and makes it impossible to lock him down as long as he has half a brain. He just builds a triforce with no resistances and all of the sudden he's unkillable because he has a bunch of free resistances from his passive and between that, Q slow removal and W use he can get out of almost anything. Every time garen enters a teamfight i just know that unless we focus almost all of our resources onto him there's no way we're actually going to take him down. And you cant just let him do what he wants leading to point 3.
  3. He does WAY too much damage for being so tanky and so "mobile". Take a look at Darius. Yes he does alot of damage. But you can CC him, he has to build pure HP items like Cleaver and Titanic to do that damage, meaning you can atually kill him if he gets caught. and as long as you zone him out of a fight or prevent him from getting in melee range, he can't get off any of him damage. All garen has to do is Q in, spin, ult the Villian for 500 true damage, and get out until he gets his free warmogs passive. He's basically playing in an assassin role while being a tank. 4.He doesn't even need to get fed. Literally come 20 minutes or once he gets like 2 kills, there no killing him. No stopping him. He will literally solo carry the game.

It's just not fun to play against. I've been frusrated by champs before. Tryn. Darius. Caitlyn. But at ;east there's a level of outplay to them. There's nothing to do vs. Garen.

His laning phase can be outplayed (he has the lowest skill ceiling in the game so if you can't outplay him, that's on you) and he can be defeated in lane without too much trouble (assuming you aren't countered) despite you having to poke him repeatedly.

No, what I find obnoxious about him is his late game. Juggernauts aren't supposed to compete with Tahm Kench in levels of tankiness and still outdamage the ADC.

He's been my permaban in champ select for the last 3 patches. Fuck that guy lol. And i don't even play top lane. I just know that Garen will find a way to get fed and take over the game. Def needed more of a nerf than what he got imo, but at least it's a start

The issue is the villain mechanic, the E armor shred, and the resist buff he got a long while ago.

The villain mechanic needs to be reworked so its not this "time to make the most fed person who shit on me and my entire team disappear with one ult" shenanigan. 525 + 40% of target's missing health. That's his rank 3 ult, and boy does that look "balanced" when you are the villain...

Oh the E...why else does Garen need an excuse not to build BC, even though if he builds it he'll have armor shred equal to Darius with BC (slightly less than darius). The funny part is that some Garen players think the shred is balanced because Darius has it as a passive on his E. Excuse me? I recall Darius having to MAX E to gain his 30% unlike Garen who only needs to put ONE point into E to gain 25% armor shred in 4 spins, that lasts 6 seconds that then can be refreshed by every tick past the fourth.

The resist buff just prompts him to build more damage than resists. Very simple to figure out, hell, all you have to do is lower it back down to 30 while keeping the cs requirement high.

Honestly, to fix these (except the resist one which is simple), the villain mechanic should instead grant damage reduction or give bonuses to his Q and E when used on the villain, and scrap the whole true damage outside of R and make Garen's ult be true damage in general and weaken the base damage and missing hp ratios. Each tick of E applies the 1% max hp true damage, which late game (level 16 mainly) he can apply 10% max health true damage with one ability. The armor shred should scale with ability rank. That's about it.
