...and you guys add a massive monster that takes down towers...

"Using [Rift Herald drop] before it expires summons the Herald back to the Rift under your team’s banner, sending her down the nearest lane as a structure-smashing siege engine. She says hello by ramming into buildings from a distance, dealing massive damage. From there, she’ll steadily smash it to rubble before moving onto the next objective down the lane."

Yorick : Well. Looks like I just got a buff. Herald + ult = inhibitor at 15 min's

Presumably, tower buffs will also happen this cycle. If they don't, then I agree.

no

It means that he's assuming and hoping.

Basically he wants it to happen and thinks it will.

I think he meant "no" as in "it means 'no' ", not as in "no I don't".

... ...or maybe he meant both...

Annie, Mordekaiser, Ivern, Yorick with Herald.

Annie: Summons Tibbers, I want you to meet Tibbers hehehe Mordekaiser: Laughs while enslaving drake's soul Ivern: Come out Daisy! Yorick: Stares at the enemy eye to eye and summons Maiden of the Mist and Rift Herald with an evil grin

Pokémon theme starts Annie/Mordekaiser/Ivern/Yorick:

  • ATTACK!

Enemy Team: These Pokémon's power level are over 9000! RETREAT!

That reminds me of Smite and its Siege mode. Perhaps they got inspiration from there?

I was thinking they got it from HotS. There are so many bosses you take control of to walk down a lane and smash everything before they die.

Rift Herald was something most people ignored and it's finally been given a role that people seem to enjoy.

Oakleaf Ranger6 votes

this change is to hopefully fulfill the goal of finally making rift herald an objective of value comparable to dragons and towers as it was originally intended. I won't be expecting any tower buffs.

Hinagiku331 votes

But if Rift Herald is too hard to kill, and towers are as easy to blow up as they are now, then Rift Herald will still not be worth it.

If towers get buffed to be harder to take down, then Rift Herald instantly becomes more desirable.

Oakleaf Ranger4 votes

Towers are not as weak as people make them out to be. They exist as temporary havens that lose effectiveness over time. Towers aren't meant to make you death proof, just a strong deterrent for it in the early game. Sieging is still pretty difficult when played properly and neither side has gained an advantage. Buffing towers wouldn't just make rift more appealing either, it would buff champions who can just afk waveclear and earth/fire dragon. Plus rift herald still has the weakness of its back to take it down faster.

Hinagiku331 votes

I meant that currently nobody is taking Rift Herald and games are ending just fine. We clearly do not have problems taking down towers just with what is in the game right now. Get a minion wave up to the tower and it goes down easily after 5 minutes or so.

If Rift Herald's new purpose is to be a one-use siege unit...then it might actually be just as worthless as it is now.

If I can already take down towers, then I don't NEED Rift Herald. If I don't need RH, then I won't go out of my way to take it.

This is really going to depend on how much faster new RH can push and how easy it is for the defending team to kill it. If it's too hard to kill or pushes too hard it could become OP and whatever team gets it will win. If it's too easy to kill or doesn't push hard enough it will just be a borderline worthless objective like it is now.

Oakleaf Ranger1 votes

I think your underestimating the value of the new rift hearld. Keep in mind that the original purpose of RH is to give teams a more incentive to focus on the top side and to be rewarding on likes of gaining a lead bot sides. Current RH just makes one person on your team tankier and faster at clearing. It's effect on the enemy team and your is almost non existent. The new one has the potential to force fights, create uneven number match ups, super push as a team, etc...

No one needs drag to win, but getting it sure as hell helps. RH can now be of comparable value.

Hinagiku331 votes

I'll have to see how it ends up in gameplay but I really don't think it compares to Dragon at all.

Dragon provides all 5 members of the team with a permanent buff. Rift Herald will not offer any permanent power since it will be gone forever one the enemy team kills it.

Going for Dragon can be dangerous but is often worth it. If new RH is even harder to take than the current one then Top and Jungle may continue to ignore it since even going for it would be too risky unless the enemy was Aced or something. If RH is too easy for the enemy team to kill then it may not be worth the risk at all since it offers nothing permanent once the unit is gone. Dragon will still have guaranteed value while RH will offer 0 value unless it takes a turret. If the enemy can reliably stop RH before it takes a tower then it could be a worthless objective, but if it is too hard to stop then it just becomes an oppressive "Win Harder" objective.

I guess I'm just worried that the new RH will be too binary to be balanced.

Oakleaf Ranger1 votes

I feel you are lacking imagination, no offense. I don't the stats of RH will be changed so it won't any harder or easier to kill compared to live version. One of best feature new RH has is that you can spawn it within a limited time period whenever you want from more or less where you want. That alone means that any point the enemy team has to be prepared and be able to react to a Tower smashing beast going down a lane at any moment. The simplist way to do that would be to ward and spread your self thin. That can leave your self vulnerable to picks or a large push against a weakly defended area. Especially if you give it to the top laner or jg who can typically appear any where on the map and just drop it for immediate impact.

Imagine what happens when some super snowbally top lane (Trynd, Fiora etc) who's already ahead gets ahold of this. It's going to make people so frustrated.

I don't like the idea of Rift Herald requiring multiple people to take it out, it sounds like it could decide games honestly.

Arduno3 votes

Will they make the new Rift Herald stronger or weaker then the old Rift Herald?

Tormentula7 votes

Most likely stronger, since it actually does something impactful to the game rather than to one individual who may just snowball crazy without it anyway.

If it turns out weaker, at least they can buff it's stats and strength in the siege or give the item good stats, there was nothing to work with on the other versions since one was a baron buff and current is just burst abusable by some but not by most.

sirwaterfles3 votes

I think its cool that they found a way to bruteforce a game if you are really far ahead without towers having to be so weak as they are now. Hope they do buff the towers in a way that apguys can still be able to take them down as i think thats one of the nicer additions to towers in recent years. To bad it made towers melt so maybe more hp would be nice. They will have to do tons of testing to get it right because i dont want to have relive the 5min decided games again so soon after preseason.

Thing im most worried about though is that it will be like item 3800 were it will turn every team into a seige comp (hard engage incase of rightious)

3TWarrior1 votes

problem is, this will be a more contested buff than Baron and will have relatively little counterplay

think legend of the poro king...that thing takes forever to take down with a full team

now it'll be fought solo

RFPSHBYQl73 votes

If this happens and towers get no buffs, then I'm quitting league. And I'm not the guy bitching about every single thing saying "I'll quit LoL" and coming back after a short time. This is the only time I'm saying this and I'm actually meaning that.

GayFluffyUnicorn4 votes

so true. This will make a snowballing team ending the game even faster. Expect game time to average around 15 min. Like seriously, imagine a fed swain, jayce, trynd pushing bot. Herald pushing top and the rest of the team mid. Nothing you can do against and this kind of coordination isn't too special for soloQ to happen. Towers are already dogshit and stopping a splitpusher is already hard or even coming back at all nowadays. I can tell the outcome of the game 10 min in which is sad.

h5LYF41Lam3 votes

anyone remembers when toplane champions used to split push? peperidge farms remembers.

Hawckey2 votes

Why do you people enjoy 50 minute games of people turtling behind their tower until they can scale? Seriously?

the weeaboo15 votes

I haven't played a game that goes past 50 min since February 12th...

Hawckey2 votes

Yea well it's gonna start happening if you want Rito to buff turrets and no way for people to take them down easily. They're supposed to be your last line of defence, not your pillow to lay on

3TWarrior15 votes

actually, the game was supposed to be played "the towers protect you first" and then come late game when you are near full build, "then in return you protect the towers"

this is why early game champions and late game champions were designated as such: early game champions would snowball lanes and use the gold advantage to crumple the opponent's late game but were ineffective if successfully stalled

late game champions have mediocre early game but get stronger and stronger the longer the game persists

as it is now, it's late game champions find it hard to exist at all and early game champions can run the game

in the past, during the early game phase, unless you were aided by jungler, it would take a solid 2 to 5 minutes to smack down a tower

now as people quote themselves over, it takes roughly thirty seconds of a tower being unprotected to destroy it, especially if the opponent is a siege champion such as Tristana or Ziggs

Sun Wu Ryuumoku1 votes

as it is now, it's late game champions find it hard to exist at all and early game champions can run the game

not really...KogMaw Twitch Kayle

but yeah i agree outside item 3153 late game champ users

Krinu2 votes

I mean, theoretically, yes - but check out winrates as a function of match time. For "late game" champions, you'd expect at increase as the match goes, but the only one of those three that actually follows that pattern is Twitch.

Troll for Trump2 votes

No, it's just lategame champs that got buffed early or have better early power spikes (2 item power spikes) or early game champs that can "scale better" (Darius).

It's more like midgame champs/builds that are good

Walmart Porn2 votes

Lol give a jinx one item, 1 wave of minions and 15 seconds. Towers are seariously paper. Not to mention you can practically ignore their damage and dive after the 10-15 min mark on most champs

Ehkrickor1 votes

I play Zac a lot, i dove a Teemo at 7 min & got away alive thanks to my passive. The damage from towers is not scary enough to be a deterrent, i didn't even have enough health to trigger Warmog's yet.

the weeaboo3 votes

I want Rito to buff turrets because they fall way too fast atm. Why would you add another thing to take them down after buffing them... that just returns it to the same state it was in...?

Hawckey2 votes

You guys are such drama queens. A turret does not fall as easily as you say until late game where everyone is hyper fed. They're fine the way they are now

OMGSoAnnoying5 votes

You're high.

Several times in the past week first turret blood (for me, anyway) has happened before the laners were level 6.

I'd be fine with them being paper if they hit harder. Squishies shouldn't be able to take four (or more) tower shots at level three.

Hawckey2 votes

That only happens when there's 4 people hammering on it for a few minutes. Stop lying lmao go in a custom match and keep auto attacking the turret at lvl 5 and see how long it takes

Vizulix1 votes

Fastest I've seen a tower die is 4 min in. Double ADC bot lane. Zigs and Tristana made the tower seem like actual paper.

Agreed, last ranked game our bot lane lost tower at 6 minutes without the help of a jungler for either side.
