With the new season coming out, can Nashor's Tooth be given tower taking capability?

Sheen, Triforce, and Lich Bane are all on hit effects that can damage towers. So why can't Nashor's Tooth be an AP item for those who want better structure taking power? This would help make Nashro's Tooth, a very expensive item, less of a specific champion buy, and more of a specific situation buy.

AP champions have always been worse at taking towers due to the fact that AD champions both greatly benefit from and have easy access to attack speed, but there's also AP champs who are even worse than the others. Namely champions who can't (ab)use Lich Bane due to spells with high costs, cooldowns, or cast times. Surely everyone has been in the situation of playing Annie or some other mid laner. That situation where you're hitting away at a tower and causing laughable amounts of damage at a very slow rate.

In addition, Nashor's Tooth is rocking an "amazing" 3% buy rate as an extremely niche item while Lich Bane is bought twice as often with a 6% buy rate.

I think change would make Diana so much more viable. I would really like to see this as a fan of the champion, and finally being able to play her again to success.

I think it would be a good purchase for AP based champions, like Diana, who are behind and want to split push to farm up.

I played so much Diana back in gold and plat. She was so much fun, just being able to split push and get infinite farm. A change like this would make someone like Jax OP with the item though. A lot of on-hit champs would just build this to split push faster. Sad life when we never get what we want because stupid item abusers in the game :(.

Jax tends to split between AD and AP anyways, so I don't think it would be THAT powerful of a buff to him in comparison to say, the 600 AP Annie.

Suggested exactly this last pre-season.

Still think it's a good idea.

Might actually make Azir good again! Oh, wait he can't even beat a tf in lane anymore [slayer-jinx-unamused]

Azir could very certainly use some love. The ability to take towers more easily would be a nice buff that doesn't impact how hard he can wreck in team fights.

Do very many mages even want an AS item besides Kayle and Azir regardless of whether or not it affects towers? As for towers, you should already be doing 40% of your AP damage to the tower if it is more than your AD.

Done251 votes

That's the point. AS is generally pretty awful on mages, which means very few would ever want to actually use Nashor's Tooth. Adding non-combat utility to it would make it more useful to a wider variety of champions.

I mean I don't feel like even if that change were made that it would be balanced since now you just do 55% of your AP + 15 in magic damage (towers have armor but no MR) with a 50% AS buff. Even then, the build path is probably awful for most mages, and would be unattractive even with that change. I don't think every item has to be a general use item. I'm ok with items that perform more niche items existing.

What are you talking about? Towers have just as much MR as they do armor.

Not to mention that there are niche items, and there then are items that are garbage on all of but 3~5% of the champion pool.

A good niche is situational, like buying Banner of Command to buff a cannon minion with for better split pushes or Locket for countering AoE burst such as an Amumu or Viktor Ult. A bad niche is "Only 5 champions can use this item.".

Chamuel851 votes

Oh did that change recently? I thought they had no MR. Regardless. They added the 40% of your AP on AA if it is stronger than your AD to help mages actually push a tower down. Doesn't really change what I was trying to say. They picked 40% for a reason, and making Nashor's not proc on towers is very much an active decision I expect.

Yes, but there are lesson's to be learned from this season as well. They tried to take one of those 'bad niche items' and make it more attractive with some buffs. (If you don't recall item 3124 is that item) and it warped the season for a good while to a no small degree. It's not as easy as just saying "Oh yeah, just add that in. Probably fine." Riot is pretty deliberate some of these cases. Veigar doesn't need another way to obliterate a tower faster. Azir doesn't need to resurrect as a drowning pick in pro play (Since they took his free tower siege out of his once overloaded kit.) Kayle is already at a 54% win rate and builds Nashor's by default AND Guinsoo's. If you want it to be a more attractive niche item, just straight blind buffing the on hits is risky business.

Rageblade was a bad item that had far too many stats, a super strong passive, and was too cheap. Even now I still think the re-reworked rageblade is a bad item.

Chamuel851 votes

I agree, and that's the sort of item that still exists that could commonly be abused alongside something like a tower taking Nashor's Tooth that champions that are already sort of lock stepped in with Nashors (Kayle/Azir) would have to contend with. Those champions would probably see relatively quick nerfs. I don't disagree with Nashor's being a less niche item. However, it already is an item that is there to given AP Mages that like Auto Attacking to have itemization beyond just bursting their spells like most mages and itemization.

I'd say that speaks more for the removal/re-re-reworking of Rageblade than anything else.
